Panthers star Smith 'makes progress,' still questionable

Sep. 20, 2006

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Steve Smith got closer to the practice field Wednesday.

The Carolina Panthers All-Pro receiver did agility drills and some light running on a separate field while his teammates practiced. He's listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Tampa Bay.

Smith, who missed the first two games after straining his right hamstring Sept. 5, was not seen during any practice last week.

"He's making progress," coach John Fox said. "We'll take it one day at a time. It was good to have him out there today."

The Panthers (0-2) have scored only one touchdown and 19 points without Smith, the league's top receiver last season.

Fox wouldn't speculate if Smith, who also caught some short passes on the side, will return against the Buccaneers.

"It's day to day. I'll talk to the trainers to see how it reacts after running around today," Fox said. "We'll make that judgment as we move forward."

Linebacker Dan Morgan will not play against the Buccaneers, the second straight game he'll miss since suffering a concussion in the opening loss to Atlanta.

Safety Shaun Williams, who injured his right foot last Sunday against Minnesota, did not practice and is doubtful. If Williams can't play, Colin Branch would likely replace him at strong safety.

"He was a starter very early on last year," Fox said. "He's a guy we have confidence in, so we won't adjust or panic in having him in there."

Cornerback Ken Lucas (neck), center Justin Hartwig (groin) and running back Nick Goings (thigh) did not practice and were listed as questionable.

Receiver Drew Carter (broken finger) was also listed as questionable, but did practice Wednesday with his right hand taped.

The sheer number of Steve Smith threads in this forum today is staggering. Perhaps the forum can be renamed The Smith Pool?

Unfortunately, the most talked about player for the Carolina Panthers has yet to play a single down in 2006. Wide receiver Steve Smith hopes he took a step toward changing that on Wednesday, appearing on the practice field with his teammates, though not actually practicing with them. Smith did some running under the watchful eye of trainers.

“Today was step one,” said Smith afterward. “At this moment, I feel good. I’ve gone from day-to-day to moment-to-moment. I’m just working on trying to get back, but I’m taking my time and being smart about it.”

Just seeing Smith out on the practice field gave the team a lift, as the team’s biggest offensive weapon last season has been missed so far this year.

“This game is about confidence,” said head coach John Fox. “I think with him out there, there is more confidence. But the reality is he hasn't been out there (practicing), and I don't know if he will be out there this week. Either way, we're going to have to be ready to play.”

“I can’t wait for us to get him back,” added quarterback Jake Delhomme. “I don’t think there is any doubt. But he’s not out there yet. (The rest of us just) have to get better and make some plays on Sunday.”

Smith was asked if the two games he has missed, both Panthers losses, were hard to take, seeing as how he was unable to do anything about them.

“It’s not that difficult because in 2004 I missed 15 games,” said Smith. “Like everything else, this is temporary. It’s not permanent, so there’s no sense making it bigger than what it is. There are a lot of things you can take from this experience and learn from it. I’m getting a lot of mental rips and evaluating film.

“I’m going to make mistakes when I get back, so how can I get frustrated at these guys for making mistakes now? I’m just trying to get back on the field and get back with my teammates. Trying to contribute and help get us going.”

So how did he look on Wednesday?

“He's making progress,” said Fox. “We'll take it one day at a time. It was good to have him out here today. I'll talk to the trainers to see how he reacts to that running around today and what it felt like. We'll make that judgment as we move forward.”

I just read Smith is very unhappy with his contract and it could be affecting his playing status(in the news blogger here for a link). Some feel he has been good to go and has not even tried because he wants to give some attention to his contact numbers and how much he realy means to the team etc. Anyone else hear this or have a different take on it, is it possible that he is ready to play and not because of this? I have my doubts but Smith does have an attitude...
