Smoking Costs the Average Smoker $1.1+ Million Over a Lifetime (1 Viewer)

And by the way, if you are going to smoke/vape something - make sure it actually does something to you (i.e. marijuana). The cost/benefit ratio for cigarettes is extremely low.

My SIL is a health nut. You know the type; you cant use Pam cooking spray because of the junk in there. Dont buy that cleaner because its terrible for you. Dont eat that food, eat this instead. She's borderline crazy with it, but overall, she's probably right with most of what she says. The point of my post, she goes out to smoke every hour.

I like to ask her if her cigs are organic. :bye:
Wow, the irony of that is off the charts.

Reminds me of my good buddies wife who is ultra healthy and organic, yet has 2 very active infections in her mouth going on I've informed her of that need treatment and that she agrees need treatment but can't allegedly afford it (they don't hurt... yet... i'm looking forward to the day they do because the pain and swelling are going to be immense and my internal i told you so will be off the charts) while she walks out to put her Miss Me Jeans butt on her new VW SUV carrying her Prada purse.

I've even gone as far to tell her that the toxins floating around in her jawbone probably negate all the vitamins and organic stuff she does, but that didn't work either.

Not sure how this is possible. The average person might not even make $1,000,000 in their life.

I guess the investment part of it is the kicker.
$4000 a year invested for 50 years @ 7% interest is $1.6M.

or more conservatively:

$3000 a year invested for 50 years @ 6% interest is $870k.
So we must be talking about the super smokers who smoke 2-3 packs a day then??

Think they're 12 bucks a pack in NYC. 12*365=4380

Smoking is the absolute worst and most worthless thing out there.

The only benefit of smoking is that it fixes your craving for another smoke for a little while.

So we have this drug that costs a lot of money, kills you slowly (though sometimes quickly), ruins your teeth, skin, overall health, makes you stink, and makes you an outcast......................and the only "benefit" is that after smoking the cravings go away for a few minutes or an hour.

Just the worst.

Well yeah I guess if we want to pick the area in the country where they cost the most, then assume 7% return on all investments, then we could approach that much.

Cigs are 5 bucks here.
I work in NYC and live on Long Island. If I wanted to move to Appalachia or tobacco road, I'd just pull out my teeth, marry my cousin and call it even.

5*365=$1825 (assuming $5 includes tax).

Over 50 years at 6% that's $529k.

Even if you don't invest it, $1825 is a nice yearly vacation.

well yeah. When I talk to the kids here at the hospital I work at I don't bother telling them about things like their lungs, cancer, or any health issues like that.

I tell them about how much money it costs, how it makes you stink and members of the opposite sex won't be attracted to you, how it makes your teeth yellow, and breath stink. Works so much better with kids who don't give a damn what their health will be in 40 years.

Then again, when you talk to smokers, they tell you they take 15-20 mini-vacations a day. Who needs one long one......................

It's definitely expensive, but there are plenty of more expensive hobbies out there, like alcohol and/or eating at restraurants. Way more expensive. Now if you have a smoker who also drinks and like to eat at a restaurant all the time, chances are that person will have zilch for retirement.

Smoking is stupid and a waste of money but this is just another case of statistical manipulation to make a headline
Yes, this has to be crazy accounting. The average American makes something like $2.2 million in a lifetime (imprecise link).

I bet if they used the same method to measure the lifetime costs of coffee, alcohol, magazine subscriptions, weed, and porn, the total would be over $5 million, which is ridiculous since most people don't make that much whether they partake in those things or not.

Well to be somewhat fair to that article, it isn't about how much you make or spend on cigs, it's about how much that money could become over a lifetime if invested (at least I think that is what is said, I dont feel like reading it :porked: ).

If you invest 5-6 bucks a day over 50 years into an account that has halfway decent gains over that timeframe, I can see a realistic number of $400,000 or more.

And if you live somewhere like New York where wages and the cost of everything is higher, then sure, a million. Peopel also spend 5 grand a month there to live in a closet.
