Late week additions to the injury report are always concerning - anyone know what is up with Tank Dell? "back injury....should be OK IF he is able to go."

The Texans are debuting their 'Battle Red' alternate uniforms tomorrow, along with their new chrome finish helmet.

Presumably the Lions will be in their white on white marshmallows. I don't know all the rules regarding uniforms but I don't think they can wear the blackberries or the blueberries. The only time they did a mix n match (white top / blue pants) they lost, so doubt we'll see that again in 2024.

If Collins and Dell play
Houston can stay close and make for an entertaining fourth quarter at home
If Collins doesn't play Houston will struggle to keep up
If Collins and Dell are out I'm going to start rewatching Game of Thrones
Because it will be less of a bloodbath than the game
Been away for a week, getting home sometime Sunday and would really like to see an exciting game
So I'll go with Nico and Tank showing up
And say...

House of Lions- 37
House of Texans- 30

With Taylor Decker out for one week, Penei Sewell will play LT and Dan Skipper will be the RT. Historically Sewell, maybe the best RT in the league, has been marginally less effective when he's been asked to make the switch in the past. Everything - the footwork, the punch, et al - is the opposite and it's not always a smooth transition.

Will Anderson being out takes away of their better defenders, but Danielle Hunter at left Edge has been having a better season, and now he's facing a career backup.

Slot corner Jalen Pitre covering ARSB looks like an exploitable matchup.

It's not known if Za'Darius Smith will be active, the Lions gave him three days off after trading for him (person before player....his house had some hurricane damage and it was supposed to be his bye week, so they decided it would be better to have his head in a good space.) If he does play I imagine it won't be for more than 15 or so snaps.

The Texans have struggled with interior blocking, amongst the worst in the league. Former 1st rounder Kenyon Green is out with an injury, they're sliding Scruggs over to LG and putting Jarrett Patterson back at C (he started about half of his rookie year at C and was OK at times.) DI Alim McNeill, who recently inked a 4-yr, $97M extension, has generated 6 or more pressures in 3 of the last 5 games. His PFF pass rush grade is 5th out of 39 qualifying players at his position, and he's 4th in True Pass Sets. Only Chris Jones, Cameron Heyward and Dexter Lawrence have been more effective.

Joe Mixon, recently named a captain, has been outstanding, going for over 100 yards rushing with a TD in 4 straight games. Detroit has had difficulty stopping the run using 4th and 5th stringers at Edge, but hopefully Josh Paschal (back from a cancer scare) will help them set the edge better this week.

Stroud has been under duress, and though he is fully capable of making plays off schedule and can def hurt teams with his rushing ability, it is beginning to show up in his stat line. Getting Nico back will help but it's uncertain if he'll be able to go tomorrow night. EDIT - Collins looks like a go

Goff is enjoying historic success, and the Monty/Gibbs combo is the best duo in the NFL. Houston has a good defense but this is a big challenge for them.

Texans are 4-0 at home, and Detroit is 4-0 on the road.

With Nico back, I think Vegas has this one pretty much dead on. I'm expecting Nico to make an immediate impact, and this to be more of a shootout than the Lions have had of late. Personally, I think Houston missing Will Anderson is a bigger loss than the Lions losing Taylor Decker.

I'll say Lions win 27-24.

● Injury report: The Lions ruled out offensive tackle Taylor Decker after he suffered a mid-week shoulder injury. The team will also be shorthanded at linebacker, and the subsequent special teams groups where those guys contribute after Jalen Reeves-Maybin landed on injured reserve with a neck injury and Malcolm Rodriguez will miss his second straight with an ankle sprain.

● Officiating assignment: Bill Vinovich’s crew. A head referee since 2004, Vinovich officiated last year’s Divisional Round matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The crew is among the bottom half in flags thrown per game this year, averaging 13.4.

● Last meeting: The Texans came to Detroit for a Thanksgiving matchup in 2020. A six-point game midway through the third quarter, the visitors pulled away for a 41-25 victory, led by quarterback Deshaun Watson’s four touchdown passes, including two scoring tosses to speedy receiver Will Fuller, who finished with six catches for 171 yards.

The loss directly led to the firing of general manager Bob Quinn and coach Matt Patricia two days later.

Sheila Hamp was embarrassed by how poorly the Lions played in the 2020 Thanksgiving loss to Houston. That photo was a seminal moment in Detroit history; Lions fans finally had an owner who understood their pain.

Two weeks later she hired former Lions great Chris Spielman, and together they formed the committee which would hire Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell.

The Texans’ 34-31 overtime win on Thanksgiving 2013 will always be remembered for the 81 yard TD run by Justin Forsett. Lions HC Jim Schwartz was penalized 15 yards for challenging the touchdown call, and by throwing the red flag on a scoring play, made the play unreviewable. That rule changed at the winter meetings in the next offseason.

Another week, another very good team that the Lions will have to face.
Could be a battle between Houston's banged up (and thus porous) offensive line vs. a Detroit D-Line that's been struggling to make an impact since Hutch went down.
I think Lions have the advantage overall (even if the talk about them being the best NFL team may always make this Lions fan wonder 'wait, really'?). Though Houston is a different team offensively with a healthy Nico. Looking forward to it, and won't be shocked if it comes down to the wire.

Texans inactives:
  • DE Will Anderson, Jr.
  • WR Nico Collins
  • RB Dameon Pierce
  • LB Jamal Hill
  • CB Myles Bryant
  • OL Zach Thomas

Lions inactives:
  • T Taylor Decker
  • G Christian Mahogany
  • T Giovanni Manu
  • ILB Malcolm Rodriguez
  • DE Za'Darius Smith
  • G Colby Sorsdal
  • SS Loren Strickland

I hope it is a good game but I think that the Texans are pretenders. I don't expect them to hang with Lions.

I'm feeling the same way and I'm quite the Houston homer. Seeing the Jets get dog walked by Cards and having both Will and Nico out doesn't bode well. The Texans really need to step up and CJ has to play the game of his life if they want to keep this close.

In their last 6 games (6-0), Detroit has outscored the opposition 216-108. That includes 4 wins on the road, 3 versus likely NFC playoff teams.

Through the first eight games of the season, the Lions have only allowed six passing TDs.

That is their lowest since allowing only five passing TDs through the first eight games of the 1986 season.

Among a QB's first eight games of any season in NFL history (100 attempt minimum), Lions QB Jared Goff has the second-highest completion percentage (74.9%).

The only player with a better mark was Drew Brees in 2018 (76.3%).

Lions RBs David Montgomery & Jahmyr Gibbs have each totaled 625+ scrimmage yards and 7 rushing TDs this season.

The last NFL RB duo to each log these numbers through the first 8 games of a season were Packers RBs Paul Hornung & Jim Taylor in 1960.

The only players in Lions history to log 70+ scrimmage yards in each of the first eight games of a season:

1. Barry Sanders (1993)

2. Jahmyr Gibbs (2024)

Looking forward to a great game. It's Goff & Cupp vs my Gibbs, Dell, & Fairbairn. A toss-up per CBSsports.

If Stroud has time, TEX may be able to keep up. DET 27 - HOU 23.

Not a good matchup in any way, but hoping my LaPorta shares pay off. If I can stave off Kyren with a lead and LaPorta to go, I’ll be nearly locked for a win in each of my three leagues (which would be a first this year!), but if not, I’m just hoping this game is a fun watch.

I’m not disillusioned as a Texans fan. Let’s keep this close boys.

My hunch is 27-13 with someone like Schultz randomly getting our one TD. Hopefully we don’t embarrass ourselves in our coolest new kit.

got Jared, Tank, Jah and Sam in my lineup tonight

swapped out Bates for Elliott because 50% of my lineup in one game seemed ridiculous lol

How many times do I preach to everyone never look at rankings these people know nothing more than we do I had Russ in the lineup all week then stupidly decided to look last night and said wow Russ at 22 I guess I should bench him and play Stroud...............DOH now I need a good game from Stroud you know like Russ did.

Texans aren’t winning this game without Nico. They aren’t going to be able to run the ball against Detroit’s front.

the guy who got caught up inside (Edge Al-Quadin Muhammad) is a 4th/5th stringer at best

really hope Cominsky is back for the playoffs
