Happy New Year, Footballguys!

Week 18

Game 272

First ever regular season meeting between two 14 win teams

Winner will be 15-2, NFC North Champions, the #1 in the NFC, and have a first round bye

Loser will be 14-3, flying to Tampa Bay*, and playing the Wild Card playoff round as a road team

Doesn't get any better than this

*or Rams since McVay is lil’ b

Loser beats TB, rematch will be January 25-26

Eagles will host LAR…unless

IF GB wins in the WC - then they’re going to DET

NFC North 2nd place team would go to the Linc

An all North NFCCG is mos def on the table

[Adam Schefter]

Lions LB Alex Anzalone, who hasn’t played since breaking his forearm in Week 11, was listed a limited participant in practice today and has “a realistic chance” to play Sunday night vs. the Vikings, per source.

Campbell said tomorrow we’ll know more if #34 is ready

Think rams will fall to 4 seed and loser goes there. TB can hold off Washington. Gb not winning in Philly.

Wednesday’s injury reports

Injured reserve updates

  • WR Kalif Raymond (hamstring) — injured reserve, 21-day injury evaluation clock started
  • LB Alex Anzalone (forearm) — injured reserve, 21-day injury evaluation clock started
  • CB Carlton Davis (jaw) — injured reserve, could potentially return in NFCCG
  • CB Ennis Rakestraw (hamstring) — injured reserve, “He’s close, but not yet.”
The Lions have started the injury evaluation clock on Anzalone, and while he is participating in Wednesday’s walkthrough, Thursday will give coach Dan Campbell a better understanding of where he is at, in relation to returning to game action.

“He’ll be out there running around today, so we’ll see how he does,” Campbell said. “It’s really going to be how he—tomorrow is going to be a really big day for us, to see where he’s at.”

No practice

  • RB David Montgomery (knee) — expected to return during the Playoffs
  • CB Emmanuel Moseley (illness) — New ailment
Montgomery continues to rehabilitate and expectations remain that he will not be available until the divisional round of the playoffs.

Moseley did not play a single snap on Monday, so it’s unclear if he was dealing with this illness at that time or if this is a recent ailment. It’s not unusual for players to become ill this time of year, but we’ll have to see how fast he recovers.

Limited practice

  • LB Alex Anzalone (forearm) — returns to practice, Injury clock days remaining: 20
  • LB Jack Campbell (rib) — New injury
  • CB Amik Robertson (calf) — New injury
Anzalone returning to practice is a huge development, but we’re in wait-and-see mode for him returning to game action at the moment.

Campbell and Robertson each managed to play every snap against the 49ers, and getting in even a limited practice is a good sign that they are in a decent spot. They may require some additional rest this week, but nothing to panic over at this time.

Full practice

  • WR Kalif Raymond (hamstring) — Injury clock days remaining: 14
Raymond has now gotten in four full practices and is in a solid spot to potentially return to game action as soon as this week. In Week 7 vs. the Vikings, Raymond caught three passes for 39 yards and a touchdown, so his return could be a big boost on offense and special teams.

No longer listed on the injury report

  • LG Graham Glasgow (knee)
  • LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin (neck)
  • CB Terrion Arnold (illness)

Vikings' initial injury report

Note: Starters are bolded.

Did not practice
  • EDGE Patrick Jones (knee)
  • LB Kamu Grugler-Hill (illness)
Limited
  • FB C.J. Ham (quad)
  • RB Aaron Jones (quad)
  • CB Fabian Moreau (hip)
  • S Harrison Smith (foot)
Full practice
  • TE Josh Oliver (wrist)

Uniforms are selected and approved by the league before the season. The Lions submitted the throwbacks for Week 18 (third time in Campbell's four years) in June.

Lions started teasing black alts NYE. Teams can wear their alternate uniform three times per season. No official announcement yet but seems like most fans like the Blacks.

Vikings have announced they'll wear white jerseys with purple pants.

DB Jamal Adams has been released from the Practice Squad. Ifeatu Melifonwu returning changed the need.

The NFL has assigned referee Brad Rogers to Sunday night's game in Detroit.

His crew ranks No. 8 in the NFL in flags per game (15.9).

19 Detroit Lions finished top-5 in Pro Bowl fan votes. Teams will be announced today (Thursday, Jan 2nd).

Fan Voting accounts for one-third of the process. Detroit fans led the league in votes cast.

Week 18 Winner: Bye

Week 18 Loser: No. 5 seed vs. No. 4

Which could be Bucs, Falcons or Rams

If all three win/lose: Loser at Bucs

If Falcons win, Bucs lose: Loser at Falcons

If Bucs win, Rams lose: Loser at Rams

The Rams are resting starters against the Seahawks, so that's a factor

Detroit Lions evergreen injury updates

Lions Defensive DVOA by Week

Lions Defensive DVOA by Week (with injury labels added)

Lions' defense started a steady decline after Alex Anzalone went out.

Additional blows haven't helped, but their defensive captain back - either this week - or first playoff game - should provide an unquestionable boost.

This is as good as it gets

I have a lot of respect for KOC (should be the runaway Coach of the Year) and Brian Flores. They have both units humming, this Vikings team is so much better than the 13 win team from 2022.

I was today years old when I realized the Vikings have an Offensive Coordinator. Wes Phillips is Wade's kid, Bum's grandson. Seems like a goofball. Within a couple minutes of watching his presser I was thinking "OK, now I see why KOC calls the plays, that tracks."

OC aside, I see a lot of similarities between the two coaching staffs. A lot of ex-players, and both staffs emphasize player development and teaching players. Kwesi is not as highly regarded as Brad Holmes but he's done a good job as the GM. Hard to think of two teams that have done a better job moving on from their long time franchise QB than Detroit and Minnesota.

Vikings have a high quality problem with Sam Darnold. Maybe one of the 3-5 best bridge quarterbacks ever, they cannot let him walk and say "Well thanks for playing like a pro bowler, we're gonna give the keys to this kid who hasn't played a down." Darnold has been playing out of his mind and has earned the right to be an NFL starter. Really impressive to see how well he has played.

Great game to finish the regular season
It has to be nothing short of awesome
So for the fans...

Detroit Lions- 44
Minnesota Vikings- 42

The Lions had 7 players selected to the Pro Bowl:
  • Jared Goff*
  • Amon-Ra St. Brown*
  • Jahmyr Gibbs
  • Frank Ragnow*
  • Penei Sewell*
  • Brian Branch
  • Jack Fox*
FS Kerby Joseph leads all DBs in PFF coverage grade and has a league high 9 interceptions. Might get the ARSB treatment - no PB, 1st team All Pro.

6 Vikings Pro Bowl players:
  • Sam Darnold
  • Justin Jefferson*
  • Andrew DePaola*
  • Andrew Van Ginkel*
  • Jonathan Greenard*
  • Byron Murphy*
Thae MIN list includes 3 FA acquisitions who cost $14.1M. Nice work, Kwesi.

And this list doesn't include Blake Cashman who has been great when not injured.

His drafting still needs work but there's no denying what he's done in FA.

Not sure how Jordan Mailata didn't make the Pro Bowl. The guy is the #1 rated T according to PFF and it's not even close.

Highest OU of week 18 by a full touchdown (55.5) and still seems low to me. If Purdy could dissect the Lions for almost 400 yards you’d think the Vikes could do the same if we can keep Darnold upright. Vikes have a decent defense but making the Lions punt seems like a tough chore these days, they have so many ways to beat you. Vikes seem like the NFC version of the Chiefs this year with all of their one score wins. Low confidence, but why not one more?

Vikings 40
Detroit 34

The key is to get out to an early lead. Play with the lead and force Campbell to take risks to keep his D off the field.

I expect (and hope) that Campbell will be taking risks right from the start.

Me too. I hope he's down 7-0 and goes for it on his own 30, gets stopped, the Vikings get an easy score and now he's down two scores with a defense that couldn't hold any of the CFP teams under 30 points.

Was going to root for the Lions, but now I'm hoping you get smashed just so we can ruin your season of destiny in the first round.
You're not even in the playoffs yet.

I really want to bet this game but can’t decide who to go with. At 1.5 it’s basically a pick-em. Last game was decided by 2 points.

O/U 56.5 - I’m probably just going with the over here. Lions have a screen door defense and can score in buckets. Vikings have a solid offense & a defense that should tip the advantage to them, but this game has the feel of a “whoever has the ball last, wins” kinda thing.

Last matchup between them went for 60 total points, and IIRC DET had a much healthier defense back in week 7.

Will be interesting to see if Flores tries to blitz Goff on 70% of his drop backs. Just about the worst thing you can do is send a free runner Jared just gets it out to the hot route. Better defensive game plan is make pocket cloudy, when you can pressure him and make him move, better chance of forcing him to turf it when you can move him off his spot The Texans tape is the one to look at if you want to beat Detroit, not Bucs (so much self-inflicted) or Bills (offense was fine that day, did enough to win).

You also need to clog the middle or ARSB & LaPorta will kill ya on in breakers. That's sort of where Flores defenses have a fatal flaw versus the Lions - that's been the biggest weakness in their last 4 g vs Detroit (last 3 with Flores). Other teams have shown that's one way to slow down the juggernaut, force Detroit to throw outside more - their bread n butter comfort food is in breakers.

Now versus other teams Flores has zigged when the other team expected him to zag (running a lot of 2-man early vs Jordan Love), so I'm really curious if the Vikings DC takes the chess match to the next level or just keeps repeating the same game plan he's used the last two years against Ben Johnson.

Goff NFL ranks at home 2022-24
  • #1 qb rating
  • #1 pass tds

  • 68.7%
  • 107.3 qb rtg

    4-0 at home:
  • 13 tds
  • 1 int
  • 69.7%
  • 32.8 avg pts
  • 127.7 qb rtg
Goff when blitzed in 2024:
  • 81% completion (1st)
  • 12.5 yards per attempt (1st)
  • 8 TDs (1st) to 1 INT
  • 0.54 EPA per dropback (1st)
Goff has more 20+ yard completions (13) than incomplete passes (12) vs. the blitz

In the game earlier this season at US Bank vs MIN:
  • 13-of-14 (93%)

That had to take hours. lol

copy pasta from StatMuse

edit:

can't do that with all tables; you can also copy into a blank excel, or worst case, copy/import a csv, format in excel, copy paste

if I ever takes more than a minute or two then it's bc I was interrupted by wifey
Every time I’ve tried to pasta a grid into FBG it comes out looking like a bomb went off next to it. lol

yeah that def happens, I run into it all the time

so you copy it into Notes, save that to your desktop as a .txt or a .csv

then open Excel & import the file, it will at least get it in the column/row format you want

then format, save, & most of the time you can copy/paste just fine

I'm not super technical but I think there is a way to protect tables with encoding because some sites won't work at all but, generally speaking, it you get it into a flat file (.csv or .txt),

edit: by copying table and right clicking in Notes to use "Paste and Match Style" so it removes formatting and only pastes the data

then it's easy to import & format it yourself

Bro…how much time did you spend formatting this? Lol
That had to take hours. lol

copy pasta from StatMuse

edit:

can't do that with all tables; you can also copy into a blank excel, or worst case, copy/import a csv, format in excel, copy paste

if I ever takes more than a minute or two then it's bc I was interrupted by wifey
Every time I’ve tried to pasta a grid into FBG it comes out looking like a bomb went off next to it. lol

Yeah that makes sense. I’m fluent in excel, so that’s easy. Just never occurred to me to do it. I’m a little slow on the uptake at times. ;)

another thing, you might not notice until you start looking for it, a lot of data heavy sites have a download icon or csv option - either one is generally a flat file, same concept, gives you the data which you can then slice & dice however you want in Excel, do pivot tables, et al.

I too only take a minute or two when my wifey “interrupts” me.
