Snowmageddon 2022 (2 Viewers)

Reed's a bit of a clown, but what are you people expecting of him? He went from 4 plows to 60 in 2 years, what is he supposed to do, send his workers to Green Bay for a winter to get trained?

To me this is like when Britan gets a heatwave. Its not prepared because it usually doesn't have to be. What are they supposed to do in the future, this may not happen again for 20-30 years.

Is Atlanta ready, or capable, of taking on the tax burden for the infrastructure of a full time snow removal detail?
We're not talking 2' of snow like up north, just street prepping and light plowing. Not multiple passes with plows...

Exactly.

HEY MAYOR!!! Why didn't you have everyone ready fro weather they see twice a decade???

They should have cancelled school earlier. Getting in a situation where kids have to spend night in school because of 2" of snow is pretty ridiculous.
You can drive on two inches of snow. You cannot drive on ice.
Let me re-phrase: its pretty ridiculous that kids have to spend the night in school after a forecasted 4 hour weather event. Its not like the snow magically appeared and no one saw it coming.

BUT REED SAID ATLANTA WAS READY!!!!!!

Mayor just told parents to not get their kids that are stuck at schools. Said they are safe. Officers are onsite. Man he is not going to be popular after this.
I don't understand how anyone can blame the mayor. This whole nightmare already happened in 2011, so it wasn't supposed to happen again. What's he supposed to do, plan?! Have meetings, run simulations, make sure they have enough salt and equipment and that everyone is trained to use it?! That's almost as stupid as having car insurance when you hardly ever get into an accident. It's like you're paying for nothing.
I am sure he wouldn't have run into any opposition when all that stuff appeared in the budget.

See- this is why I didn't take you seriously at first when talking about your wife's plight. Who said it wasn't supposed to happen again. Weather on the east coast has gotten flakey. We all know that. It did happen again and they need a better plan. Ask your wife.

As for the bolded? No. Words.

:lmao: Wow

I don't actually think it's reasonable to expect any southern city to handle freezing rain, then droppin temperatures very well.

I understand the need to blame someone. Hey, we can't have a massive mess and not have ONE PERSON directly responsible, can we?

But really, even if every road was sanded, salted, and schools cancelled (this is pretty inexcusable, I'll give you that), and work let out, all timed to slow down the glut of traffic, 25 hillbillies were still gonna careen off the road.

How many people that live there have all weather tires, with any tread on them? The post above, about a buddy trying to go 2 mph and slipping....that's bald tires, and all the salt in the world ain't gonna help that. Salt and sand will still leave slippery spots, and a city full of people with no experience driving in that stuff is going to lead to a mess.

There's massive pileups in Wisconsin and Ohio, why should Georgia be "prepared"?

Exactly. People are mad and they need somebody other than themselves to blame.

Sorry, I assumed it was common sense that municipal leadership should prepare for inclement weather. The mayor can make excuses all he wants, but he looks like a complete buffoon here.

There is a stretch of 75 still clogged with traffic, no one moving because of the ice, not a salt truck in sight. Not only were they not prepared, they're not responding to this event in progress, and we're going on 24 hours.

Alrighty then. Agreed. You do get pretty wound up sometimes and I can't always tell which direction you are headed...

Geez, what a freaking mess. I was pissed my kids got out early, but that was because we knew the snow around here wouldn't even start until around 6, or a couple hours after everyone would be home. While I am sure the side roads are a little bad around here, kids are home again and it snowed so little that the grass is still poking through the snow. There will probably be a delay tomorrow morning as well. Seems like Hotlanta always gets hit way worse than Charlotte.
More than a little and it isn't just neighborhood roads.
Our street is now completely devoid of any snow/ice. In fact, it will probably be completely dry not too much longer. We may have not gotten hit with much south of town, but I know we will have another delay tomorrow even though the roads around here should be dry overnight. There isn't enough stuff on the roads to melt and re-freeze and the stuff on the grass won't melt.

That said, I expected to have them home today, I just didn't get the ridiculously early dismissal yesterday. I understand you don't want to get in an Atlanta situation, but they left school after it was already bad. Our kids were home 5-6 hours before precipitation even started. Even the weather had it hitting our area around dinner time earlier in the day. I am all for safety, but our kids were home when the snow was hitting Atlanta, still way away from us. Atlanta should have closed before us, so they effed that up royally.

Check out this video of atlanta my buddy just posted to Facebook... holy ####.

Biggest Accident I've Ever Seen

EDIT: Now it appears it's shared footage from 2yrs ago in ohio  Nevermind
If it's the one I'm thinking of only one person died. They got out of their car after crashing and was hit by another crashing car while they were inspecting the damage on their car.

If you're ever in a situation like this, if you're jammed up - just stay put. If you're out in the open and see an opportunity to get away, run like hell and don't check out your car's damage first. Don't want to be mowed down by a semi out in the open, but don't want another crashing car to take you out while you inspect the damage.

As mentioned there are issues in areas where this is just winter and they are having problems. Not sure I'd put it all on the mayor here. How do the people of Atlanta react when there is mention of raising taxes? I mean around here raising any tax sets off all the howling but when the chips are down people expect stuff to get handled. It costs money to handle stuff.

Stupid people in leadership positions not doing their jobs and putting lives at risk is one of my pet peeves.

Well as I said Arrowwood was a skating rink at 8 AM. Cars in ditches, cars stuck trying to go up hills, very icy at stop lights. Not sure how it is now of course but this morning it was no joke.

:lmao: at the CNN Breaking News ticker:

2.6" of snow shuts down Atlanta area

CNN really dishing it out today.

Why not ask to just borrow from salt trucks from the more prepared states in the union?
"Can we borrow your teleport machine to get 'em down here, too? Thank you kindly, there, neighbor, that's awful white of ya!"
Hm. I guess they'd have had to have been down there before the storm hit.

IF ONLY THERE WERE A WAY TO FORECAST THE WEATHER IN ADVANCE.

Do YOU want to be the politician lending out salt trucks to other municipalities during the winter they have invented terms like 'Polar Vortex', and are naming storms things like Hercules?

I understand, and believe me, I spent an extended time working down there and I'm not a huge fan of the mayor, but he was helpful in some work place scenarios we had, so I've had dealings with him and found him to be proactive and responsive.

Problem in my opinion is Atlanta may be too big of a city. I don't know how you could adequately respond to all of South Atlanta, all the way up to Sandy Springs. They should be in smaller districts perhaps, I think local government and tighter communities, while more infrastructure leads to better responses.

Understood, I believe you. My buddy had to help someone get unstuck on the way to work and said it was bad this morning. I was out running an errand at dinner time, about 4 hours after my oldest was the last to get home when I saw the first flake hit my windshield. I knew when I saw that first flake that the kids were home today. I have no issue today at all, it would have been dangerous for the buses and kids. I was just annoyed at the early dismissal yesterday. It was as much of a conservative approach as Atlanta was a stupid approach.

Yeah, I heard that on the Weather Channel. Shall I edit it to say, "during the winter that has been wicked cold', or can we just assume it?

I was just mentioning that polar vortex is a known weather phenomenon and has been part of meteorology for quite some time, I make no judgement on whether or not you should edit. Just the science nerd in me acting up.

What drives me nuts is all the school closings in December and January when it was just really cold, not even a drop of precipitation, then on a day when the roads are clear in the morning but we know it's going to snow in the early afternoon, we're going to send the kids to school in the morning and send them home in the early afternoon. There doesn't seem to be any logic behind those decisions.

As an ex-Michigander, it cracks me up to see cities in the south shut down because of 2 inches of snow.
I spent a winter in Anchorage Alaska driving a 42 passenger, manual transmission school bus. Now that is a bear on ice. But these folks have no idea for the most part. It's hard to blame the inexperienced.

Well as I said Arrowwood was a skating rink at 8 AM. Cars in ditches, cars stuck trying to go up hills, very icy at stop lights. Not sure how it is now of course but this morning it was no joke.

To get credit for the school day I think the kids have attend for a certain number of hours. If you guys have already used some weather days that was probably part of the calculus on the decision.

As a Chicagoan I'd usually be the first to point out how stupid Southern people can be when it comes to cold/snow, but this really is not snow. It is a 2+-inch thick sheet of ice, and it is nasty. And yes, it is a car-dependent sprawl here in Atlanta, so there is no way to address it adequately. So thankful we live where we could use public transport to get home from the airport last night.

The mayor looked like a complete jackass in that CNN interview, though. He needs to get some sleep and try again.

I guess they went with better safe than sorry.
True, but there was no need. Even the forecasts in the morning had nothing starting until after school was done. Not getting treacherous but not even starting. If you are going to end school at 11:30, what was the point of going? If you are going to wait until the next day to send them home early, why not actually look at the forecast at that point and realize there won't even be a flake on the ground until a couple hours after the last dismissal.

I bet that was long enough to qualify it as an official school day for the federal dollars.

Jim Cantore in Charleston! We're doomed.
But at least a hurricane won't make landfall while he's there. So you got that going for you.
No, but College of Charleston students are flying aroundBeing that Charleston is a peninsula and 2/3 of the way out of town are high bridges, my work, and most of downtown, let out at 2pm today. At that time it was just rain so the bridges were still open and the interstate was ice free. I just checked outside and it still raining, but it is freezing. My deck and the cars are covered in a sheet of ice, but the sidewalk and driveway are just wet. While outside I did hear a limb snap and fall on the next street.
:lmao:

Nice knee by Cantore.

Better quality video

These pale in comparison to the "fog" wrecks on i-40 going from Asheville to TN. I think it was around 1990 the smaller of the two (in my lifetime) happened. It was like 75 cars and 10-15 killed.
