Snowmageddon 2022 (1 Viewer)

little offtopic, but do you guys know of any type of ice or solution that will de-ice your sidewalk and not eat the concrete up
Salt
is eating my sidewalk up

the constant refreezing is killing it
try sodium chloride then
good idea

I think they carry those at wendys and mcdonalds in little free packets.. WINNING!!!
in all seriousness, I use ice melt something along the lines of this

http://www.homedepot.com/p/TETRA-Flake-50-lb-Ice-Melt-Bag-50B-TT/204894909

if you have pets that type of stuff can aggravate their paws so they make a melt that is more pet friendly

I'm really suprised that Georgia and Alabama don't have something in place to deal with 2 inches of snow and ice.

I understand that they don't get much snow, and if they got hit with ten or twelve inches out of the blue, something like this might happen, but two inches?

It's not as though they sit on the Equator and there is no chance of this ever happening.
Our elected officials are far more concerned with making sure no abortions happen under any circumstances and persecuting immigrants than they are with helping the people of the state. Our state legislatures are complete jokes stocked to the roof with corrupt demagogues. Our state governments resemble most mid-African dictatorships in concern for citizens and overall competence. I would much prefer that our legislature be done away with entirely simply to have less people stealing money from the state.
I thought I heard someone mention George Zimmerman in another thread. you might want to go and check.

WTF is your problem?

Calcium chloride. Non corrosive to concrete, safer for plants, fast acting...just as dangerous to pets as sodium chloride, more expensive and hygroscopic (will draw moisture out of the air) and might keep surfaces damp is you use too much.

So a quick roads report from Charlotte. I'd say at least 90% clear on my way home. Still the obvious spots in shade which will re-ice. Also some spots in the center of some roads that still have a lot of moisture and I would expect them to re-freeze pretty soon. Tomorrow's commute should be fine although truly secondary streets may still be an issue locally.

About 2 pm the sun came out enough to improve conditions for about 3 hours or so. Was able to get across town and get my wife and daughter and get back home. Cars literally abandoned were the biggest problem. Literally left in the middle off roadways and turn lanes. My subdivision was awful to get out of. Only one of four lanes passable due to accidents yesterday and wrecked cars just left. As of about 6 pm the last child was picked up from her school.

So many crazy stories:

* Wife's colleague had to abandon her car in Roswell and walk five miles - with a six year old and four year old - to make it to her house.

* Friends dad had to sleep in his car on the interstate

* Colleague of mine spent the night at our client's building in Sandy Springs as he couldnt make it back to Johns Creek

And there are so many more. By all accounts I had it easy - 1 hr 45 minutes from Lenox back intown. One day later, most of the roads in my area have begun to clear up but school is still cancelled tomorrow...

The other thing is so many people here are helping out with the roadways and cars. We had a group of guys here on cell phones monitoring traffic in and out of our subdivision. You can't see over the hill and only one lane was passable so they were running traffic. Also had a guy sanding that one area. Near my wife's school another bridge down to one lane where people who lived there were helping people get by. Had shovels chipping away at the icy areas.

Alabama EMA: Citizens whose vehicles remain stranded will be given opportunity to retrieve them once safe. Any vehicle blocking traffic flow will be towed.

Just watched Reed's CNN interview. He made it a point to mention, twice, that there were no fatalities. From the 2.6 inches of snow.

Uh, great job?

So the mayor was on Today this morning and made a good point. All the video they showed was from places outside of his jurisdiction. All the schools and interstates. He seems to be taking the heat for the failings of other counties, other school districts, the DOT, and most importantly people's own poor decision-making.

And it bears repeating, most road salt used outside of extreme cold climates is rendered ineffective somewhere between 15-25 degrees. Even if every road in Georgia was salted ahead of time, there would have still been ice. So people need to consider that maybe, just maybe, #### happens and that can be bad if you're not bothering to look out for your own self. Everybody in the country knew that this system was going through the south. That kind of weather down there should generally have people's attention. Nobody should have been surprised.

ETA: My God, they turned it into a scene straight out of the Walking Dead.

Not sure about the "ICE" issue. I have a friend who moved down to Atlanta (from Philly) and lives about 20 minutes outside of the city. He laughingly sent me this pic yesterday of the epic snow that shut down the area. He tried to get to work and said that outside of his development cars were stranded all over the roads. He also mentioned that he had little to no problems moving around (he drives a real 2013 Camaro) however he had to turn around because of blocked roads.

What's not to believe? The roads were iced over.

Which is why here in Charlotte they put down sand after using a salt water mix. You can do more than just put down salt.

I can only go by what he said, but there was not that much where he was. Now he works in the city so he had to drive in it on his way home and he didn't encounter that much ice.

Why is everyone blaming the mayor and the governor? Can people not listen to the weather forecast themselves and make smart decisions for themselves? If you think the weather is going to be bad then leave work or take your kid out of school. Don't wait for some government official to tell you what should be common sense.

:lmao: at Philly Camero dude not seeing the big deal.

Yes, sand should follow salt. I imagine areas that flirt with the freezing mark more often would have a mix. That's the AMC serial The Walking Dead horror show, is the moisture arriving above freezing and immediately the temp dropping below 20. That's what happened there and it's what happened in the DC area last week.

Agreed, and we will not make this mistake again. Wife only went to work because she had an "important" meeting with a colleague coming in from out of town. Otherwise she would've stayed home. Next time there is any snow at all in the forecast I'm stocking up two weeks' worth of food and alcohol and if my wife says anything about leaving the house I'm throwing her keys on the roof.

Ridiculous to say we shouldn't blame the mayor and governor if you've witnessed the lack of preparation and response to this event, but to your point, yes, now we see how much they suck and we take our lives in our hands if we're in a vehicle when it's snowing.

Very Walking Dead-ish.

These happened in Wash DC 3 or 4 years ago. I had read all morning about the forecast of ice and heavy snow. I left work at 1PM and got home at 1:30. My co-worker left work at 2:30 and got home at 4:00AM after picking his kid up at daycare around midnight.

Sure, they should have closed schools. But we're all ultimately responsible for our children and ourselves. Not like there wasn't any warning of a major winter storm coming to the Southeast this week.

I thought so too, yeah.
