Snowmageddon 2022 (3 Viewers)

The Hank said:
Power has been out since 3:30 AM last night. According to PECO there has been extreme damage in my area and they cannot give an estimate on when it will be restored. I live in a woodsy area directly west of Philadelphia. There are trees leaning over on power lines all over the place just driving around the streets in my neighborhood.

This winter sucks.
Sorry to you, hank and jb. Definitely blows.
Update:

We stayed at a friend's house last night w/ our 2 boys and our dog -- they live in Thorndale and lose power a few times last night, but had a gas fireplace so we were able to stay warm (thank goodness). They have power there right now and they are safe -- that's what matters most to me.

I went by our house today and pretty much every major road was impassable, looked like a freaking hurricane rolled through all of the down trees/powerlines/branches. I finally made it to the house after an hr's worth of detours (normally a 10-15 min. jaunt from Thorndale to D-Town) and saw that no where had power near us except grocery store (I suspect they have backup generators to protect their food product). House was a balmy 51 and water was not frozen and worked (THANK GOD) -- I went ahead and turned of the water main to my house and have the faucets on a drip (the upstairs were already drained by the time I tested everything).

I have checked with PECO and they are estimating our power will be restored by Sunday. Wonderful. Checked with my cousins who live in the area (Lionville & Thorndale/Coatesville) and they are not expected to get power until Sunday as well. Had a trip planned out to visit my parents in Pittsburgh but my dad is saying that there is a chance of a snow storm Sunday AM; we really want to make the trip to PIT as we'd be more comfortable there than at our friends, but at the same time the last thing I want to do right now is to try and commute back to PHI in a snowstorm w/ an infant and a toddler on Sunday.

Winter sucks.
Still no power for us as of right now.

We got an update though saying that power should be restored tonight instead of Sunday.

I'll take it!

Got three inches of snow here in central NJ, with only few flurries left. Not too bad. However we're gonna slammed on Wednesday night.

Tomorrow will be the 9th snow day at schools since January...they had two built into the calendar.
Just got the call, today is the 10th day out, and we haven't seen nearly the weather that most of you have (save the few really cold days).

Good news is, it looks like we may be done. Nothing in the immediate forecast and temps getting warmer by Thursday.

You know it's bad when the 10 day forecast said it might get close to 30 next week and that actually made me excited.

Well it's on now here in Charlotte. Had a forecast of 4 inches of snow Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday evening. Oh and then for fun it is going to switch over to freezing rain late Wednesday into Thursday. This town will be closed.

Looks like it will miss Charleston this time. I'm hearing everything east of I95 should be safe from freezing, and I trust this because they never get these things wrong.

It does look like you guys will be just warm enough to miss out. But yeah sometimes they do miscalculate.

I planned to fly to Philly Tuesday night, trying to change that to the morning. My poor wife is going to have to work from home without me (I do as well) while I am sure the kids will be out Wednesday and Thursday. I also assume there will be a two hour delay on Friday and probably an early dismissal tomorrow. I just hope they don't send the kids home at 11:30 again (just enough to probably count as a full day). She will probably kick me in the balls when I get home on Friday. We just got back from a no kids trip to the Caribbean last week and it is pretty much like we were never there. I'm going to have to find something nice in Philly to hand her before the kick in the balls even though we said just dinner because of the trip.

I would really be surprised if they kick the kids early tomorrow. All the models look like nothing happening until around 6 PM. Now a late start Friday may certainly be possible.

Better the freezing rain after the snow than before. At least there's that.

They are now saying the freezing rain will get layered in with snow on Wednesday. So we will get snow, then freezing rain, then snow, then freezing rain, etc. It will be a traffic crap sandwich.

That was the same as the last time, everything looked like the start was around dinner time (I saw the first flake near our house around 6). The forecast that morning was pretty precise on the start and they still dumped the kids home. I understood Atlanta and their idiocy, but there was no need for an early dismissal last time and hopefully there won't be one tomorrow. At least my wife is already thinking no school Wednesday and Thursday and the weather looks bad enough that she might only give me a knee to the groin instead of a full backswing.

Anything to reduce the momentum.

OH COME ON!

You will be hearing some initials this week that'll help define how big/widespread this week's storm is.

A SECS is a Significant East Coast Storm which brings heavy snow to a portion of the east coast; these typically happen every year or every other year.

A MECS is a Major East Coast Storm; these storms bring a large amount of snow to an even wider area and typically occur every 3-5 years. The April 1, 1997 and January 23, 2005 events are known as MECS....

A HECS is a very significant winter storm that impacts a large amount of real estate over the astern US. These major storms typically only happen once every 10 or so years. One of the most memorable HECS was the March 13, 1993 "Superstorm."

If afternoon model runs today are correct in their snowfall projections and the area snow would cover, this week's storm would be considered a HECS.

We will continue to keep you updated on this major winter storm.

I think he's being overly dramatic. I could see a foot easily though depending on where you are in the I95 corridor.

They were dropping "solution on the road yesterday....I was a bit confused by this given the rain we are suppose to get today. Regardless, it could be worse. We could be ATL.
Yep, looks like Atlanta is toast - probably for either the rest of the week or Wed-Fri. They've already closed a lot of schools and I just read this:

"Gov. Nathan Deal has expanded a state of emergency to include 31 additional counties, bringing the total to 45 ahead of another winter storm headed to the metro area."

I wouldn't be surprised if people still go out in this mess because they think the weatherman is always wrong.

You knew Atlanta wasn't going to take any chances. They will be like Charlotte going forward. Even the hint of something happening has them rolling trucks and canceling stuff.

Just got back from the supermarket, and it was like a blizzard was coming. Very few loaves of bread to be had. Bunch of nutjobs.

got weather alert text for the storm. looks like Wednesday night into Thursday morning for DC. I haven't been following the weather lately and by the looks of the thread, I am behind with the news. Has there been accumulation estimates yet?

6-8 inches for Philly Wednesday to Thursday is latest. Not so bad, but when you consider the amount of snow on the ground already and the volume we've dealt with, it sucks

As always they are having trouble pegging how much and where in the DC metro area. It does appear to be a major event. Washington Post:

This is a classic Miller A-type storm with the primary storm (surface low pressure center) tracking along the Gulf coast and then up the Atlantic coast. Many of today’s computer models (NAM, GFS, UKMET, and Canadian) all slam the city with heavy snow. Last night’s and today’s European model also forecast heavy precipitation but suggest snow will change to sleet and then rain after several inches of accumulation near the District.

This is one of those storms where small changes in the storm track can lead to huge differences in how much snow falls on the city. A track too far to the east would mean just light precipitation, whereas a track too far west would draw in milder air changing snow to mixed precipitation and rain.

Unfortunately, the models differ enough on the track to make a definitive call on how much snow might accumulate over any specific place around the city almost impossible this early in the game. However, even the warmer westerly (more inland) track favored by the European model would still favor a whopper of a snowstorm for areas from Leesburg, Va. to Frederick, Md and points west.

Any way you slice it, this is shaping up to be a major storm with the snow probably starting Wednesday night before midnight in the southern suburbs and the wee hours of Thursday morning for locations north of the city. Rush hour Thursday morning could be a mess if the snowier models are correct.

Upstate South Carolina is expecting 3-6 inches of snow and .25-.50 inches of ice. Schools and other main offices closings are already out.

The only thing I care about is the power. If it goes out, we're going to be a bit chilly for a few days. I hope that doesn't happen.

I hope this works out to be reverse juju, but this seems like one of those winters where we're getting snow into late March. It's literally just storm after storm, and I'm officially past my breaking point. Just miserable.

East of Atlanta here. Everything is shutting down. Hell schools were cancelled earlier today for Tuesday and Wednesday. The plant I manage is down starting tomorrow afternoon until Thursday afternoon, knowing no one will show up any way. Crazy down here.

That's my uncle. I imagine he'll have updates on his Facebook before any more updates for the CWG, so I'll give an update when I see it.

Worst winter in Philly I can remember in a while. Only good thing about this new storm coming Wed is if it starts early enough Wed pm like they think hopefully schools will get canceled before bedtime so there's more time to plan. Ugh.
