Snowmageddon 2022 (3 Viewers)

HISTORICAL SNOWSTORM!!!!!!!!! WE'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT.... GET TO THE STORE AND STOCKPILE EGGS, MILK, AND TOAST!@!!#@!!@#$%^&^%$#@#$
LOOK AT ME, I WANT TO MAKE FUN OF THE PEOPLE THAT SAY LOOK AT ME!

For those that lose power, you can still get heat in your house one zone at a time depending on what type of heat you have. Each zone has a switch you can flip to manual.

I'm just glad FC42 is hooking us up with these fresh "The weatherman is sometimes wrong!" hot takes.
My bad, everyone be on the lookout for the historical (never seen anything like it before) event today/tomorrow.

Anyone who has watched the news in NYC (10pm, 11pm, 7-9am) on any channel has heard this nonstop. I just think it is a little ####### ridiculous (and an obvious ratings ploy) to call a blizzard a "never before seen event" or "historical"... It is a snowstorm, fill your car with gas, have some water / canned foods in the house, use common sense and you'll be fine.

Sorry I find the media hype funny

I really need Philly help here.

My lady is still "stuck" in Tampa and trying to figure out when to book flight home. Right now, it's booked for 7:30 tonight, getting in at 11.

Note: her car is at the airport, it doesn't move well in the snow. Even if the flight makes it, she would be stuck at the airport until morning if the roads are cleared.

I suggested re-booking for noon tomorrow, arriving around 3/3:30 and figure we'll have the best of it behind us by then?

Updated snow totals for the area? I swear Sheik is doing this to me on purpose for my Sheena Parveen comment last week ;)
Pretty sure the Philly airport will end up shutdown both today and tomorrow

That's what I'm figuring.

Was hoping for a noon departure for her tomorrow putting her in Philly around 3:30 when most of this has passed (hopefully)

Bread, eggs, and milk? They are going to be sorry when they don't have some vanilla, cinnamon, and maple syrup to complete their French toast.

If I recall Otis had a survival supplies thread. Any who followed my advice in that thread are already prepared, including for a few days without power.

If you leave right now she could fly to Virginia and you could pick her up :)

Thousands of people without power for days, you say?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
The news in NYC has been saying nothing but "Historical Storm, we've never seen anything like this, yada yada yada"....

We are getting a foot of snow, media hype is what I'm laughing at - I'm not referencing Boston, Rhode Island, or any other parts but here in NYC, where not only is this not historical, but something we have seen about 20x in the last 30 years.
Aren't they predicting the possibility of 2 feet of snow? The record for New York City is 26.9 inches in 2006 and other storms left 20.9 in 2010, 20.2 in 1996, 19.8 in 2003, and 17.7 in 1978. Those are all in the top ten of most snowfall in New York City.

This is exactly what I find funny about the media... 24 hours ago, they were predicting the most snowfall (a historic event, something we have never seen before, etc)... As the storm has neared and the forecast has become more predictable, they're now down to about 12 -15 which is still a lot of snow, but they haven't stopped with the "historic" or "never before seen" stuff in the media, in fact it is almost getting worse.

I'm not laughing at the snowstorm, sorry if that is how it came across as I'm sure some of you will be in ####ty spots, but the media coverage locally in the city is ####### ridiculous with hype and trying to incite fear...

This forecast has as much credibility IMO

The latest GFS I see says 8-10 in the city proper which probably doesn't severely impact mass transit.

Businesses had planned to close, but now may be open. People have to leave early if they commute because of the dire tales of the LIE/LIRR shutting down shop. I have family in Worcester and hope everyone in New England stays safe and warm. It sounds like Mass/RI is going to be digging for a while.

The National Weather Service just updated their website predicting 20-30 inches of snow for New York City with potentially higher amounts on Long Island.

I've been running errands all morning, and the grocery and liquor stores in SE NH are packed. Seems to be getting worse now that it's started to snow.

The funny thing is I remember the blizzard of 1996 and the storm in 2010 that they didnt plow. But for the life of me I cant remember that 2006 storm that set the record.

The National Weather Service is predicting 20-30 inches of snow for New York City. If that happens it's historic.

fantasycurse, normally I'd agree with you about the media hyping a storm but in fairness they have been saying "POTENTIALLY" historic storm. The fact of the matter is, it is still a historic storm, just it may have shifted slightly east so it wont be as historic in NYC.

I'm the one who originally posted the link which said "historic storm." For context, I am in R.I. and that's what the snippet was about. This is supposed to be in the same neighborhood as the Blizzard of '78, which folks still talk about around here like they saw Jesus himself.

ok.

and a couple days ago the forecasts all had NYC in the eye of this thing... but I guess they shouldn't report anything, in case they're wrong.

They aren't adjusting downwards locally even though most models now show this, that wouldn't be good for ratings.

Still not backing off this historical nonsense even though the models keep dropping. NYC now 12-18. Pretty sure I've seen those measurements at least a dozens times in the last 30 years. HISTORIC!!!!
Yeah I always love the exaggeration. According the how the media portrayed how the N. CA storm was going to play out, we should have all bought flood insurance. I think they do this to try and keep those who are bound to be stuck and in trouble off the roads so they can focus on the clean up. There's always a story about some yahoo trying to brave the elements, gets stuck, and creates a major cluster####.

Also I think there is a contract between grocery stores/gas stations and the media...

people read the daily news? and when was that taken? if it was this morning, they wouldn't have been too far off... but obviously still pumping the hyperbole for freak out reasons.

fwiw, NY1 had their forecast at 12-18" this morning at 7. that's a big change from 24-36" from yesterday.

I'm rooting for nothing as I sit in sunny CA with highs to be around 70 today except that people stay safe. The snow may not be a problem to those who are used to it, but power outages is nothing you get used to.

Whatever...

In the link above that I posted to Floppo, even the image of that random woman is there for what purpose? They're trying to incite fear, like they do with every storm.
I wonder what the NYTimes front page looked like this morning... as bad as the rags like post and daily news?
nydailynews.com has 46 million monthly visitors a month...

Christie declared a State of Emergency for NJ this afternoon. All state offices closed remainder of today and tomorrow.

who apparently want that kind of hyperbole.

my point is- you know what you're getting with both of those- to then act dumbfounded or annoyed over and over that they're reporting in this way seems... pointless. and fwiw, I like both of them just fine for what they are.

which is why I asked about what the NYTimes site looked like this morning. I'm guessing it was much like the NY1 broadcast- we're getting a lot of snow and wind (blizzard) but not as bad as we thought yesterday.

Ever since Sandy I don't freak out on the media or government when it comes to storms. I'd rather they overreact.
:goodposting:

this.

there was also that Bloomberg fiasco from a few years ago when we had a big snow coming and told everybody to just chill out, not planning for the worst.

I prefer my politicians and news telling me as much as they know- and if it's currently forecast as storm of the century then tell me that... until the forecasts change and the news needs updating.

NJ transit shutting down until thursday

The last service for NJ TRANSIT's rail, bus and light rail will depart from its point of origin at 8 p.m. tonight and scheduled to arrive at their final destinations by/at 10 p.m. due to worsening weather conditions.

Service will remain shut down until Thursday morning January 29, depending on track/equipment and infrastructure conditions. The last train will make all local stops.

I have DirecTV, the worst part of DTV is no NY1...

It isn't just Daily News and Post... It is every channel. Fox News at 10, NBC at 11... Then every morning news show this morning (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX). I get the fact that the storm is bad, but give us the actual news as it becomes available, don't make it worse than it is...

My exclamation points, bold, capital letters that people are ripping me for, are exactly what the news has been giving us for the last 24 hours, even as the forecast locally has gotten better, they continue to make it worse. That is my point.
