NJ transit shutting down until thursday

http://www.njtransit.com/sa/sa_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=CustomerNoticeTo&NoticeId=2398

The last service for NJ TRANSIT's rail, bus and light rail will depart from its point of origin at 8 p.m. tonight and scheduled to arrive at their final destinations by/at 10 p.m. due to worsening weather conditions.

Service will remain shut down until Thursday morning January 29, depending on track/equipment and infrastructure conditions. The last train will make all local stops.
I havne't been following NJ... but I thought they weren't getting as much as areas to the north?

Whatever...

In the link above that I posted to Floppo, even the image of that random woman is there for what purpose? They're trying to incite fear, like they do with every storm.
I wonder what the NYTimes front page looked like this morning... as bad as the rags like post and daily news?
nydailynews.com has 46 million monthly visitors a month...
who apparently want that kind of hyperbole.

my point is- you know what you're getting with both of those- to then act dumbfounded or annoyed over and over that they're reporting in this way seems... pointless. and fwiw, I like both of them just fine for what they are.

which is why I asked about what the NYTimes site looked like this morning. I'm guessing it was much like the NY1 broadcast- we're getting a lot of snow and wind (blizzard) but not as bad as we thought yesterday.
I have DirecTV, the worst part of DTV is no NY1...

It isn't just Daily News and Post... It is every channel. Fox News at 10, NBC at 11... Then every morning news show this morning (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX). I get the fact that the storm is bad, but give us the actual news as it becomes available, don't make it worse than it is...

My exclamation points, bold, capital letters that people are ripping me for, are exactly what the news has been giving us for the last 24 hours, even as the forecast locally has gotten better, they continue to make it worse. That is my point.

I hear ya. the bolded punction marks just got a bit old.

the news I watched last night at 11 (NY1 and Ch 2, IIRC) seemed pretty straight forward with their info- although they were still forecasting 2'+, which would make this a pretty massive storm for the city. I only checked NY1 this morning, so don't know what the rest of them did.

the worst part of the news last night was they had their blond weather guy giving the info, and then cut to commercial with "but make sure to watch all hour, as I've got vital information to share later". yeah- ok- click.

I don't think I could exist without NY1. Pat gives me wood every morning. And don't get me started on that vixen, Jamie shupak.

Ever since Sandy I don't freak out on the media or government when it comes to storms. I'd rather they overreact.
I just talked with your brother ****, literally 30 mins ago, he said it's not going to snow. Here. Western Chester County peeps can breathe easy.

I think people are ripping you for posting the same trite observation over and over again. It's not because they disagree with you.

The guy on 2 last night stated, "I was told never to predict history, but this storm will be historic." He wasn't downplaying anything.

Kinda like the news channels I am making fun of

What bothers me about this kind of forecasting, it becomes like The Boy Who Cried Wolf... The storm before Sandy (I believe the name was Irene?) was supposed to be the 100 year storm, once in a lifetime. It was not, then people didn't take the Sandy warnings as seriously as they should've.

The ####### media are scumbags with their weather reporting.

The Media should do their best not to over hype the threat, sure. However, people who consume that media should do their best to realize that the weather is unpredictable, and meteorologists are not wizards who can tell the future.

Where is the Sheik ? Has he been run off by everyone jumping into this thread he has been keeping alive or is he drowning his disappointment that NYC and not Philly is going to get the big hit ?

must've missed that part while I was watching NY1 at the hour. that's pretty bad. is he the blonde guy who looks like a cartoon caricature of a new caster?

Most of north east NJ is under a blizzard warning and in the 18-24 range.

I have to wonder sometimes if mine is the only house that has milk and bread almost all the time. It can't be that hard, right? Do people not shop for this stuff until they are out of it completely? The stores here looks like World War Z is happening in Pennsylvania right now and spreading east. You'd think Damnation Alley was a prophetic documentary.

Park at or near the end of your driveways and then simply shovel/sweep a "walking path" from the top of your driveway to the shoveled part. That's what I do. Makes it a lot easier.

The most recent snow I did that since our driveway is gravel/crush-n-run and the part nearest the road is on a slope. Snow/ice makes it tough to get up the driveway...and tough to stop from sliding into the road. If we do get the "big one" next week I'm thinking about trying a tarp. Would be hard to move once covered with snow but maybe the jeep can pull it, or maybe a come-along.

Penn Station going totally bonkers. Packed trains, fist fights, you name it.

Office closed early, made a mad dash and caught a train unscathed. I'm still expecting this to be overblown. Will be interesting.

By the way you guys aren't getting serious enough in here. Be seriouser.

Only got a dusting in Cincinnati. Still waiting on some snow here. Any chance one of you NYers can spare about a half a foot from your historical world-ending blizzard?

:kicksrock:

LL Bean shutting down everything except the flagship store.

YOU CAN HAVE OUR OUTLETS BUT YOU'LL NEVER GET OUR BEANS!!

Pretty boring in Philly right now. Got out of work early for nothing I guess. Right now it looks like no cancellations tomorrow unless things start happening soon. I think they are only talking 6-10 now, but I guess that can be enough of a pain in the ### to close things down and work from home.

Yep.

Very boring. This sucks.

7pm flight still on ?
Got cancelled.

Rescheduled for tomorrow arriving at 3:30

Hoping we're all ok by then - seems like we will be.

Thousands of people without power for days, you say?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
The news in NYC has been saying nothing but "Historical Storm, we've never seen anything like this, yada yada yada"....

We are getting a foot of snow, media hype is what I'm laughing at - I'm not referencing Boston, Rhode Island, or any other parts but here in NYC, where not only is this not historical, but something we have seen about 20x in the last 30 years.
Aren't they predicting the possibility of 2 feet of snow? The record for New York City is 26.9 inches in 2006 and more other storms left 20.9 in 2010, 20.2 in 1996, 19.8 in 2003, and 17.7 in 1978.
This is exactly what I find funny about the media... 24 hours ago, they were predicting the most snowfall (a historic event, something we have never seen before, etc)... As the storm has neared and the forecast has become more predictable, they're now down to about 12 -15 which is still a lot of snow, but they haven't stopped with the "historic" or "never before seen" stuff in the media, in fact it is almost getting worse.

I'm not laughing at the snowstorm, sorry if that is how it came across as I'm sure some of you will be in ####ty spots, but the media coverage locally in the city is ####### ridiculous with hype and trying to incite fear...

To be honest I don't think this has been overhyped so much as 25 miles west means 30 inches for NYC and 25 east means 12-18. The heavy band predictions have shifted from the city to nassau and now Suffolk where the mega projections are now pointing but again, a bit east or west and this is from a blizzard 12-15 inches to a megablizzardageddon

When was this? I caught the 3:52 to Long Beach and it didn't seem anything strange at all.

@jimdonovancbs3: ALL @AmericanAir @USAirways flights to/from Philly are canceled tomorrow, Tues 1/27. #cbs3snow

ABC News just used the "once in a lifetime phrase" again referring to NYC. I get that we are getting a blizzard, but unless it is something like the storm that hit Buffalo months back, that is just overhype IMO... We get a blizzard like this at least every 2-3 years, far from once in a lifetime...

Putting my son in his snowsuit and walking to dinner. If the million year blizzard gets us, I wish you all the best.

Getting a taxi was impossible & Uber had a 4.5x surge... Took the subway, what a ####### mess that was.
#*$(# uber. i thought that wasnt legal?
Uber could get themselves (utterly and deservedly) ####ed here.

My understanding is they have some agreement with the State that limits their ability to screwcharge people during emergencies. It's legally price gouging, and I think a 4.5 surcharge would be just that.

Nothing against a company trying to get the best price for their services, but god I will go to all ends to avoid using Uber at this point. Hopefully enough think like me. Guys are scum from how they act.

Once a State of Emergency has been declared (which it now has) the surge gets capped...

ETA: 1.5x

I totally agree here... although if it were 30 in, that would shatter NYC records. But seriously, is 30 much different than 26?

In reality, snowstorms are much more an issue outside of City centers. Just brings ability to leave your home to a halt, and everything that goes with it. The city you shovel out and trudge, but you get places.
