From Terrible to C+ (rounding the 2 together) in retrospect? That strikes me as the classic, "They're bastards but they're OUT bastards" situation.I've warmed up to the guys they selected a lilttle, but I'm still not overwhelmed.
If Adam Jones ends up being a good corner, then so be it. Its hardly worth splitting hairs over a 1st round pick that clearly was high on many many boards.
Roos....hm. Its pretty clear by now that a lot of people (myself included) were a bit off on their OT rankings. That said, I can't help but wonder if another Corner at that point or another trade down would have bore more fruit. If he ends up as a solid Tackle, like they obviously think he can be, then great. I'm just a little suprised by what I think was uncharactersitic overspending.
Roby....eh.
Jones...eh x 2. Strikes me as similar to a dozen other WRs that pop up in every draft. Truthfully, looking back at it, I think there was some nice value at Oline and especially CB still on the board at this point (Mathis, Wilson, Green).
Fuller . I think that Elton Brown and Marion Barber would have been MUCH better selections here. NOt that there is a problem with Fuller per se, just that he strikes me as being painfully raw. I think that the idea is to get Fuller to be in the rotation at Safety and be deep depth at CB. Maybe they can coach him up to pay off. If so, then. If not, then I think passing on a guy like Elton Brown was a big error.
Stewart is a nice pick, but I worry about his range. If the long term plan is to have Roos at LT and Stewart at RT, I can see it working out. I actually like the Stewart pick for the most part.
Williams was a nice pick, but he makes me wish we'd passed on Jones earlier and selected another Corner, an RB, or more Oline help.
The rest is depth so its hard to argue with much since its impossible to tell who will pan out. It will be a good draft if 2 of these guys are on the roster in 3 years. i DO like the Hill pick in the 7th.
Final grade - 1st day: C
Second day - 2nd day: B, but only because I think passing on Brown and Barber for Fuller was a large error
Well, my original assessment of Day 1 was based on me thinking they took the wrong guy in round 1, overpaid for a guy in round 2, and then spent two round 3 picks on guys that may never pan out. Seems like no value at all to me.I have since resolved myself that Jones is probably better than I am giving him credit for, Roos was probably the best OT on the board at that juncture, but the WRS still bother me.From Terrible to C+ (rounding the 2 together) in retrospect? I feel the same. Williams, Jones, Roby, in that order.Ironically enough, I personally like their WR selections in reverse order. Roydell could develop into a starter in the league eventually IMHO.
I like Colin had some questions about the early selections but the Titans draft record during the Fisher/Reese era speaks for itself and I trust their judgement. As far as who is behind C Brown here is a few things to remember:I feel the same. Williams, Jones, Roby, in that order.Ironically enough, I personally like their WR selections in reverse order. I don't know if I like this too much.1) It seems like a bit of a slap-in-the-face to these guys. I'm sure they told them all that everyone will get a shot, and I believe they were genuine. But I mean come on. If you have four or five spots and invite 12 guys to compete with them, that's cool. But if you have those same spots and invite 36? Doesn't seem like each player really has a chance. On top of this the Titans just announced via Titans Official Website: They have agreed to terms with a whopping 36 unrestricted FA's!!!!!
The competition will be mind-boggling in camp this year. I love It!!!
NASHVILLE, TN, April 25, 2005 - The Tennessee Titans announced that they have agreed to terms with the following undrafted free-agents:
WR Jason Anderson - Wake Forest
RB Charles Anthony - Tennessee State
LB Brian Atkinson - Northern Illinois
....
....
DT Marcus White - Murray State
DE Alton Wright - Miami-Fl.
Most teams sign a ton of UDFAs. Do you realize how many undrafted players there are? 1. It gives these guys a chance, which is all it takes for some of them.I don't know if I like this too much.1) It seems like a bit of a slap-in-the-face to these guys. 2) It kinda makes the Titans seem like clowns. Like they can't evaluate talent, they just need to invite everyone and take a look. Couldn't they get it down to a reasonable number? I mean 7 more WRs? Aren't they smart enough to figure out the three or four whom have a shot?
3) What does being drafted in the 5th / 6th / 7th by the Titans even mean now? Makes these picks essentially FA signings as well....hope their families aren't too excited as they are very likely to be cut. (Last year 12 of 13 made the team or practice squad).
Don't get me wrong...I can't see how this can make the Titans a worse football club. It oozes competition and I do think they will get the desired results. I have no doubt, and full confidence in thir F/O to make excellent decisions from here on in. I just think it makes the Titans look Mickey Mouse and it kinda seems like cheating. But who knows, maybe mroe teams take this approach next year?
I personally think you are reading into it a little too much. These kids have dreamed their whole lives of playing in the NFL. Just signing this agreement is a huge milestone for them. They can now say they "played in the NFL". Obviously, since we signed so many of these guys compared to other teams, it shows me that not only do we like them, but that they like the oppurtunity here in Tennesse over some some of the other options they had as well. Fact is that we have a very young football team with a lot of holes. I also would not be suprised at all to see the Titans cut a few more established players (1, 2 or 3 years with the titans) if some of these youngsters prove to be both better and cheaper.I don't know if I like this too much.1) It seems like a bit of a slap-in-the-face to these guys. Best pick: This team had to get a corner who will start right away. Adam Jones will be that guy. He will also be a heck of a return man.
Questionable move: The Titans used three picks on defensive ends last year, but it wouldn't have hurt to take a chance on one more in the first four rounds this year.
Steal: The Titans used three picks on receivers, but fifth-round pick Roydell Williams might be the one who is most ready to play on this level coming from a pro offense at Tulane.
Overall grade: B+ As usual, the Titans had a good draft. And they needed it. Jones will be a big-time player, and they made some other good picks.
Michael Roos, Brandon Jones, Reynaldo Hill, Vincent Fuller, Bo Scaife -- ALL look like solid NFL players with much promise. I think those players make it a very solid draft class. Fuller showed tremendous promise as a FS and I think he'll start there next year. Roby and Roydell are solid NFL WRs, though not #1 like Jones can be.PacMan -- 1. His athletic prowess is undisputable. I think his ability justified the #6 pick. 2. If he doesn't grow up QUICKLY, as in the next 6 months, he may never get a chance in Tennessee. Not quite like Maurice Claret, but he shows the potential for wasting it all. 3. Personally, I think when it is all said and done that he gets his stuff together. I hope so.Now that the season is over and we've seen some of the rookies on the field it should be time to reevaluate the draft.
Being geographically challenged I've not been able to see any Titans games this year at all but it seems to me that most of the players picked this year at one time or other have received praise. Brandon Jones, Reynaldo Hill and Bo Scaife probably more than most. I don't remember seeing anything on Nash though but IIRC he got injured early.
Chime in, Titans homers
ouch. looks like you, Mort, and all those NFL personnel directors whiffed, and Colin nailed it.Interesting.
I think the Titans have had a great draft, Mort thinks they had the best draft, and several NFL personnel directors agree.

QB Billy Volek Signed through 2008* Has no-trade clause in contract
Article on PacmanCoach Fisher unhappy with Pacman's playThis offseason the Titans are expected to be about $10 million under the cap, but the total hinges on what happens with McNair's contract. The 11th-year pro will be involved in the decision, which could result in another restructured contract (with an extension), retirement, release or trade. At issue is the $50 million option bonus negotiated into McNair's contract in March 2004 which would count a devastating $26.8 million against the cap in 2006."It can't stand the way it is, we all know that,'' Reese said. "His decision will help structure whatever it is we'll do.''
"He has a lot to learn and it is his job now, to learn,'' Fisher said. "We have stuck our hand out. I have, his teammates have, and the organization has. We have extended him a hand, a helping hand, and now he has to take over and be a pro and do it himself.''The rookie's controversial season came to an ugly end Sunday in Jacksonville. He received back-to-back penalties — the second for allegedly cursing an official — during the third quarter of Tennessee's 40-13 loss and Fisher benched him the rest of the game."I am disappointed the last two weeks in his play on the field,'' Fisher said. "I thought four or five weeks ago he had made the turn … but I think he got worn out. I think he became distracted and I know for a fact he has a long way to go to become a true pro in this league."His actions on the field (Sunday) were inexcusable, I don't care whether it is a preseason game, a scrimmage, what have you, you do not respond the way he responded. … He needs to learn, not only how to become a better cornerback, but a better returner, a better member of a team, and less of a distraction.''
I don't agree, and it is way too soon to tell, anyway.None of the guys drafted in April were the problem at all -- save for Pacman. And his was a problem of attitude and team chemistry, not of NFL ability.ouch. looks like you, Mort, and all those NFL personnel directors whiffed, and Colin nailed it.Interesting.

Rolle > Pac Man.Pac Man, BMW = toss upEh...
I actually feel a little better since I realize Pacman is probably a better choice than the other two guys they might have picked - Rolle or BMW. Frankly, no one in the next 10 picks looks like they'd have been a decidedly better choice than Jones. That said, I don't see it working in Tennessee. I know it's one year, but that's a tough locker room to build respect in, even with longtime fixtures like Mason, Rolle, and George long gone.
I think Roos will be useful. I don't know if he'll be an anchor lineman, but if he can start for the next few years before becoming a "billionaire" in free agency (LOL), that's cool.
The WRs I was off on. They should make Calico expendable. Scaife will make Kinney expendable, but I'm not sure I see the value in that. Nash is a miss. Fuller and HIll though should be useful Defensive players for a few years, so thats good.
Colin
Also, just gotta love that PacMan attitude... :X2.09 - Traded down and ended up with someone who wasn't in any top-100 that I've seen. PLUS, Khalif Barnes was still on the board. Taking Roos might be a god pick eventually, but he's at least a year away from even being remotely worth putting on the field. I have no idea how they passed on Barnes. Even if they didn't want Barnes, I wouold have rather seen Adam Terry, Matt ROth, DAn Cody, or a 3rd tier WR. Instead, we got an OT that would have beenthere in round 3. Greeeeat.
And us Jags thank you very much for Khalif...he has been a starter now and a boost to the running game.![]()
In short, I see that the Titans, my beloved Titans, ended up with a CB that will be overwhelmed a minimum of 4 games a year (Colts x 2, Andre Johnson x 2), an offensive tackle that could have been had a round later, and 2 WRs that are neither special nor pro-ready...![]()
Not to mention the M. Jones/Wilford/R. Williams trio...all 6'-3" plus.
Colin
Well...obviously.Colin, you don't think Merriman, Ware, or Johnson would have been a better pick?
When the #### did you start having "humble" opinions?Rolle and Pacman are hard to compare because of their different styles of play.
Both are future ProBowlers IMHO.
