It's official - Mimi's Pizzeria is really really good.  A slice that would be a solid everyday option back home, easily. Excellent for NY Pizza outside of NY/NJ (and maybe southern CT and a couple spots in Philly).  Pumped that's it's two blocks from my pad.

Owned by a couple of Brooklyn cousins, highly recommended for a slice or pie. The owner even said he'd whip up some Chicken Francese for me.... something oddly difficult to find West of the Mississippi where it all seems to be piccata.

Still waiting for our strip club night.

 
I didn't have any money when I grew up there, but I used to skip middle school lunch and sprint to New York Subway.   Old owners recently sold it to some classmates of mine and I hear it's doing well, still.  Probably a far cry from what a New Yorker would prefer, but I have fond memories.  

Also Burger House.  Check out Kuby's too.  

I grew up near Northpark Mall.  Used to be a huge field that's now all developed.  Bought my Jeep CJ7 from the Caruth family.  The dad was so happy to see it go he gave me a great deal on it.  Turns out it needed major work.  That family didn't make its money from being dumb.

I just toured Northmark last night. Wow, some serious haute couture there.  Really a fantastically well done center. 

I'll have to hit up your old haunt sometime and say hello!

The hipsters go to plano to a dive place called Marinara up north of the wall. It's a unassuming strip mall with a caved in ceiling that IMO is as good as you can find anywhere.  I'm interested to see your take on Cane Rosso.  Purists usually hate it.

Unless the hipster is a 55 year old dude names Luigi from the old country, or at least a 45 year old named sal from Brooklyn, #### that ####.

But i'll give it a whirl. FYI my purism is a street slice, not some fancy conncoction called pizza cause they put some farm to table bull#### on a baked sheet of dough.

My favorite (RIP) pizza joint in Bowie MD was run by a family from Palermo via NY.  The son of the of the owner "Joe" is named Sal. He & his idiot twin sisters decided they didn't want to be in the family business when their father was looking to hand over the business to them and go into semi-retirement. So instead of being owners in a busy mom & pop italian restaurant that won the Washington Post's "Crummy But Good" award (think of your favorite dive bar for food) , they ended up waiting tables at dumps like Macaroni Grill & Olive Garden. 

Decent pizza in Northern VA can be found here (even the hipsters like this place), here and here .

In this case the hipsters probably are right on this one. Its a legit try hard NYC expat running the deal. 

Cane rosso is more a trendy upscale deal.

Sorry to hijack, but I'm sort of familiar with Bowie; what was it called and where was it?

The Senate hearing on SB6 (the Bathroom Bill) is scheduled for March 2. That ####-knob Dan Patrick is still pushing it hard. I think its just morally wrong, but even if you don't, its an economic disaster for Texas. There are plenty of studies done on the negative economic impact it will have on our state.

Anyway, I encourage you to call your state rep and state senator and tell them to vote no on this bill. You can find your reps here.

Well, I'd rather not debate those merits in Koya's thread. Maybe I can post in the NC bill thread instead.

But, as I said above, regardless of how you feel about the underlying issue, the bill will be terrible for the Texas economy.

Use to live near Coit Rd and Belt Line - back when Richardson was the last frontier of North Dallas. Seem to end up at Northpark or Highland Park Village when we go back.

check out the Meddlesome Moth to drop some coin on a nice dinner and drink some of the strongest beers in the world (Sink the Bismarck at 41% ABV quad IPA.)

The Water Grill (I think this is the name) is a new place right on the edge of uptown, McKinney and Olive I think are the cross streets - was freaking delicious brunch and excellent oysters (odd for Dallas). I was just there Super Bowl weekend. I miss Dallas. Can't wait to move back one day.

 
If y'all like sushi, Uchi is some of the best I've had. I've not been to the one in Dallas, but Uchi and Uchiko in Austin are fantastic.

Happy Italian Delight (not a very good name),  most just called it Italian Delight. It was at FreeState Mall on 450. Cetrones on what is now old 450 was also legit & a favorite spot of the PG County police (before Bowie got its own PD).

Never ate there but I sort of remember Free State Mall. The strip mall across 450 had a Chinese place that my wife liked, but that was mid to late 90s.

I lived in Bowie from 1984 to 2002. Don't get back there very often. I go to Annapolis or Baltimore (Fells Pt/Pier 6/Os games) far more frequently. They finally knocked down The MarketPlace (across 450 from Free State Mall) and put in businesses that have a chance of succeeding. 

OK... back to the life & times of Koya.

Nah. I am too much a snob for yama.  Sushi sake is just behind me and its probably 2nd to uchi in the area imo.  

Uchi is pretty spendy. Expect 100 a head easily.

I run with a full spectrum.  Just as comfy in a dive bar as a lux lounge, and honestly, moreso the former. 

Fav pub so far is Blackfriar if that means anything.  Industry alley bar too.

Dallas is completely against this, as our mayor has come out vocally in opposition.  Different dynamic here than NC as the Cities hold more weight than in NC, and the business community as well.  But the gov is a disaster

My wife loves sushi - me, not so much, They have regular Japanese fair? Also, what's the relationship bw Uchi and Top Knot?  They are right around the corner from work almost.

I'm from Chicago and all I'll say is don't get your hopes up about pizza or anything else with dough/bread down here.  You're just setting yourself up for disappointment.

Headed to Dallas next week to onboard a new employee.  Never been to our office there before (Westlake/Trophy Club area)... any recommendations for lunch/dinner places?

Westlake is a good 40-45 min north of Dallas (longer with traffic), but you are pretty close two two downtown areas with some good restaurant options. Grapevine is a nice historic downtown that has a few options though I can't recall off the top of my head... Roanoake has a smaller downtown but is close and has Twisted Root which is a good burger and beer type place, Hard 8 BBQ that is supposed to be really good, and maybe the best fried chicken period at Babes Fried Chicken - they literally have chicken or chicken fried steak, salad, corn and mashed potatoes but it's awesome. Very casual and can get a line at peak hours.

as you are way up in the burbs, don't know much else - fornstesk there's a Perry's in Flower Mound which shouldn't be far and is a good steak place, high end, Texas feel. 

If you are able to go for a night out, I'm sure those downtowns have some bars or take the trip to Deep Ellum for the full party scene near downtown (bars, music venues, can get fairly rowdy), or can do dinner and hit a couple spots in downtown/uptown, the latter being my nabe.

If there will be a gentlemans club visit, find your way to The Lodge and should you want anything specific just ask I'll try to get you some options. 

 
Planning a trip for the 8/24 Cowboys/Texans preseason game with my wife. Will be flying in to Love Field on 8/23 and leaving 8/25. Looking for recommendations on the best hotel to stay at and any must do’s while we are there. Not planning to rent a car (will be relying on Uber/Lyft), so I thought staying close to the stadium was our best option. Appreciate any input as neither of us have been to Dallas.
