Soccer Ref dies after being punched for Red Carding a player. (Rec Lea (1 Viewer)

How is a punch in the neck "less than murder?"

Hope he goes to prison for a long long time. What a ####### #######.

These charges were originally filed before the guy died... Hopefully they are upgraded to some sort of offense that carries more than 10 years.

Sad story.

I bet he wasn't intending to do major harm and just happen to hit the wrong area at the right time. Poor ref and family. Hope they upgrade the charge now that the poor guy is dead.

When you take a blind cheap shot at a guy looking in his pocket, that's intending to harm him. He might not have meant to kill him, but he did. Death is one of several outcomes from striking somebody. Everyone knows this.

Please don't try to diminish what this ####### did. Plenty of drunk drivers didn't mean to kill people, but ya know what? It didn't just happen. This guy made it happen and he can rot in a cell for life for all I care.

I live in the area and work with a number of people that play rec league soccer in the area or have kids that play in the area. Incredible the amount of Anti-"Dearborn" sentiment I've heard/read in the last day or so. From run ins in adult leagues all the way down to incidents in youth/kids leagues with players and parents alike.

Anti Deaborn meaning what? Anti Muslim? Something along those line? I'm not real familiar with the Dearborn area.

More Ethnicity than Religion. The attacker was from Dearborn, which happens to have a really large Middle Eastern population.

Doesnt matter, it was completely uncalled for and should rightfully be upgraded to at least manslaughter. Its a local soccer game not a bar fight that got out of hand.

I grew up in Dearborn and I will say some Arabic guys take meaningless sports with an absurd level of seriousness. Pick-up ball, not even just at a park, but even private "country" club where the range of ages playing is 12-50. It should be casual, we are playing old fat guys and kids. Yet, I regularly had to kick guys out, break up fights, etc. All over arguments on if a guy got hacked, if it was 10-9 or 10-8, who has got next, etc. we eventually just canned open gym. Oh and volleyball, my god the screaming matches over in vs out in volleyball. Most guys were cool, but many of them were very poor sports.

I've considered becoming a referee, as there is a serious shortage and I want to stay involved in the game. This is a good reason to sit on my couch instead.

If he had just socked him a good one and was able to get up and continue, it would be low class ####### act. You see it in sports, especially in hockey. I'm not sticking up for him, but just saying that socking someone doesn't usually lead to death and this guy is in hell right now and I'm sure in shock. Drunk drivers know they can kill someone and many do. I just don't see stories on how a punch killed someone. This case is very unfortunate and surely this guy didn't think it could kill whereas drunk drivers do know and yet still decide to chance it. That's all. He'll get his in jail but I don't think this is going to make folks stop and think before slugging someone like the drinking and driving does for many.

Soccer is a complete wuss sport but fans regularly riot and seriously assault and even kill eachother.

Football is considered violent yet how often do you hear about violence and anarchy in the stadiums?

With the exception of philly of course

Cleveland, but it's always beer related in one way or another.

You don't think those soccer hooligans aren't 6 pints deep when they go out and stir up trouble?

Probably. The Browns suck, so the fans get tanked. Soccer sucks, so the fans get tanked. Makes sense to me.

Ok but ive seen soccer fans bring bombs to the stadium.

Thats a little different than drunken browns fans argueing over which fourth string QB should be starting for them.

The man who died was a 44 year old father of two boys, aged 13 and 9. A friend of more than 30 years setup a memorial page with links to a gofundme page. The memorial fund will help cover funeral expenses and provide for the boys education. If you are so inclined:

By newspaper accounts, John Bieniewicz had a lifelong passion for soccer as a player, coach and official. Very sad tragedy.

Another beer induced shining moment in Cleveland sports:

Billy Martin insulting Cleveland before the game, 2 girls guarding a truck of beer and empty gallon jugs of thunderbird.

Unreal. I cant believe ive never heard of this.
