some waivers maybe you missed (1 Viewer)

Brightful surprises me. He looked decent as a CB in NFLE and dramatically improved. He returned INTs for TDs with his PR/KR ability you know of. I thought he was the perfect type of "fill two roles" guy to keep.
BTW this was an injury settlement. Feel bad for guys like him. Worked hard all offseason to improve their game including going to NFLE and then they get hurt.

thank you, TickNFL-Suspended Indianapolis LB Kendyll Pope for the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS-Re-signed LB Jimmy McClain.NEW YORK JETS-Waived DT Alan Harper.

Jags bring McClain backJACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed linebacker Jimmy McClain on Wednesday. The team waived McClain on Saturday, but brought him back after a series of other cuts this week. McClain played in one game with the Jaguars last season before being waived in November. He played in 24 games with the Houston Texans after signing as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2002. He also played in NFL Europe last year, recording 55 tackles and two sacks for the Scottish Claymores.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- The Bengals claimed rookie receiver Dante Ridgeway off waivers Wednesday from the St. Louis Rams, adding to the competition at their deepest position. The move came a day after the club released former No. 1 draft pick Peter Warrick, a receiver who had played in only one preseason game because of injuries. Ridgeway was the Rams' sixth-round draft pick out of Ball State in April. He played in two preseason games and had one catch for 19 years. Ridgeway set numerous school receiving records at Ball State. To open a roster spot, the Bengals waived offensive tackle Benton Johnson, a second-year player from Mississippi who missed all of last season with a torn thigh muscle.

Falcons waive RandallWIRE SERVICE REPORTS «August 31, 2005Atlanta waived quarterback Bryan Randall on Tuesday, but coach Jim Mora Jr. said the Falcons are strongly considering putting the former Bruton High and Virginia Tech standout on the practice squad."We like him athletically, like his personality, like his work ethic, his character," Mora said. "We think he's athletic enough and has enough arm strength to potentially play in the league someday."DOLPHINSMiami cut 10 players, including long-snapper Ed Perry, who had been with the Dolphins for eight years and had just signed a new contract.Perry, from James Madison University and Highland Springs High near Richmond, had been a Dolphin longer than anyone on the team except middle linebacker Zach Thomas. The Dolphins' other cuts included former William and Mary cornerback Billy Parker.BROWNSFighting a staph infection in his right leg, Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. resolved he one day would return to play. The Houston Texans' stadium could be used for New Orleans' home opener Sept. 18 if the hurricane-damaged Superdome isn't available, stadium president and general manager Shea Guinn said.

Jerome McDougle, a former first-round draft pick who was expected to start at defensive end this season opposite Jevon Kearse, and safety/return man J.R. Reed were placed on the non-football injury list Tuesday. Linebacker Greg Richmond and fullback Thomas Tapeh were placed on the physically unable to perform list.

9/1/2005 Eugene Baker, WR (NE) Unable to move his way up the Patriots' depth chart, Baker has been released by the club. The receiver saw limited action with the Carolina Panthers last season, averaging 6.1 yards on eight punt returns and 19.5 yards on two kickoff returns. 9/1/2005 Bethel Johnson, WR (NE) After missing the bulk of training camp with an ankle injury, Johnson has been activated from the physically unable to perform list by the New England Patriots. The receiver, who was a second-round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, had 10 catches for 174 yards and one touchdown in 13 games last season. He also averaged 24.8 yards on 41 kickoff returns. 9/1/2005 Jabar Gaffney, WR (Hou) After missing the Texans' first three exhibition games while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and a staph infection in his groin, Gaffney is slated to make his preseason debut in Thursday's meeting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If healthy, the receiver is expected to be in Houston's starting lineup this season, lining up opposite Andre Johnson. 9/1/2005 Corey Simon, DT (Ind) Simon has agreed to terms on a multiyear contract with the Indianapolis Colts. The veteran defensive end, who was the sixth overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, became a free agent earlier this week after the Philadelphia Eagles decided to remove their franchise tag on him. Last year, Simon had 32 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 16 regular-season games. 9/1/2005 Corey Jenkins, LB (GB) The Green Bay Packers have claimed Jenkins off waivers from the Miami Dolphins. The linebacker split last season between the Dolphins and Bears, totaling four tackles in seven games. He was a sixth-round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft. 9/1/2005 Peter Warrick, WR (Sea) Warrick has signed with the Seattle Seahawks, agreeing to a one-year contract. Official financial terms were not released, but the deal reportedly is worth $1.4 million, including a $500,000 signing bonus. The receiver, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, was slowed by shin, knee and hamstring injuries last season and in training camp this year, prompting the Cincinnati Bengals to waive him earlier this week.

CINCINNATI BENGALS-Placed CB Terrell Roberts on injured reserve.DENVER BRONCOS-Released DE Chukie Nwokorie.INDIANAPOLIS COLTS-Agreed to terms with DT Corey Simon. Claimed DT Lynn McGruder off waivers from Tampa Bay. Released DT Blake Lobel.

9/2/2005 Tedy Bruschi, LB (NE) Taking the 2005 campaign off to fully recover from the mild stroke he suffered just 10 days after the Super Bowl, Bruschi has vowed to return to the Patriots' lineup in 2006. The 32-year-old linebacker has three more years remaining on his contract and would be paid $850,000 in 2005, $1.35 million in 2006 and $1.7 million in 2007.

9/2/2005 Anthony Thomas, RB (Dal) With his performance in Friday's preseason finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Thomas appeared to all but wrap up a spot on the Cowboys' 53-man roster for the 2005 campaign. The running back rushed for 64 yards on 11 carries and hauled in three passes for 28 yards. 9/2/2005 Manuel White, RB (Was) White will be forced to undergo surgery in the near future after breaking his left leg in Thursday's preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens. There's a good chance that the rookie running back, who was a fourth-round pick in this year's draft, will miss most, if not all, of the 2005 campaign. 9/2/2005 Freddie Mitchell, WR (KC) Mitchell has been released by the Kansas City Chiefs. The receiver had been limited since suffering a slight meniscus tear in his right knee during the first week of training camp, but recently resumed working out with the team. Because of his limited time on the field, he did not have an opportunity to make an impression and move up the Chiefs' depth chart.

The Chiefs also signed Thomas Barnett, a free-agent tackle, to a two-year contract and waived Aaron Johnson, a second-year guard from Ball State.

9/3/2005 Jeff Garcia, QB (Det) Garcia is expected to miss at least six weeks after breaking his fibula in the Lions' final preseason game against Buffalo on Friday night. the veteran quarterback also injured his ankle, but a MRI on Saturday was inconclusive about the severity of this injury. Garcia will undergo more tests. 9/3/2005 Michael Jameson, CB (Cle) The NFL has suspended Jameson without pay for the first four games of the 2005 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. A sixth round draft pick in 2001, Jameson played in all 16 games for the Browns last season, but has made just one start in his career. He will be eligible to rejoin the roster on October 10. 9/3/2005 John Welbourn, T (KC) Welbourn has been suspended for the first four regular season games of 2005 for violating the NFL's steroid policy. The reserve lineman lost his appeal of the suspension and will not be eligible to rejoin the roster or practice with the Chiefs until Oct. 16. 9/3/2005 Gus Frerotte, QB (Mia) The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Saturday that Dolphins head coach Nick Saban has named Frerotte as the starting quarterback for the season opener against the Denver Broncos. 9/3/2005 A.J. Feeley, QB (Mia) According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Feeley has slipped to third string on the Dolphins' depth chart, behind Gus Frerotte and Sage Rosenfels. Feeley started eight games at quarterback for Miami in 2004,but struggled badly this preseason. 9/3/2005 Duane Clemons, DE (Cin) The NFL has suspended Clemons without pay for the first four regular season games of 2005 for violating the league's substance abuse policy. 9/3/2005 Darnerien McCants, WR (Was) Just days after being released by Washington, McCants has signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. 9/3/2005 Hugh Douglas, DE (Phi) Douglas was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on saturday as the team scrambled to get down to the NFL-mandated 53-man final roster. 9/3/2005 Jon Ritchie, RB (Phi) Ritchie was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday as the club got down to its final 53-man roster. The fullback missed most of the 2004 season after tearing the ACL in his left knee. 9/3/2005 Sean Landeta, P (Phi) The Philadelphia Eagles released Landeta on Saturday. The 43-year-old punter had been signed in late August after being released by the Rams this past offseason. Landeta has an NFL-record 1,367 punts in his career. 9/3/2005 Craig Krenzel, QB (Cin) It appears Krenzel has won the #3 quarterback spot for the Cincinnati Bengals, after the club cut the other candidate for the spot, Casey Bramlet, on Saturday.

The Patriots did indeed keep six receivers on the final 53-man roster, but former Chicago Bear David Terrell and second-year man P.K. Sam were not among the six. Instead, it was Deion Branch, David Givens, Troy Brown, Bethel Johnson, Tim Dwight and Andre’ Davis making the cut.The competition for spots at that position was intense and Terrell had to know he was in trouble when the team dealt a fifth round pick to Cleveland for Davis. Of the players truly fighting for the last two spots, Sam and Terrell were the only two without any kick or punt return experience.Beyond that pair, the biggest surprise cuts had to be defensive lineman Rodney Bailey and maybe linebacker Eric Alexander and tight end Jed Weaver, although the latter two faced stiff competition. Bailey’s roster spot had to go to rookie undrafted free agent Mike Wright, who came out of nowhere to have a strong summer and unexpectedly win a roster spot. He received increase reps as the summer progressed and played early in games against opponents’ first units while also being featured on special teams. It was noteworthy that the 295-pound defensive tackle that will likely back up Vince Wilfork on the nose, was used to cover kickoffs, a sign that he is quite athletic for a bigger player.Weaver had a solid camp, but just wasn’t ahead of Daniel Graham, Benjamin Watson or Christian Fauria on the depth chart. Alexander also came on of late, but was squeezed out of a deep position group. The offensive line battle left Gene Mruczkowski on the outside looking in while Brandon Gorin, Nick Kaczur and Russ Hochstein secured backup spots. When Hochstein started at center against the Giants, it was an indication that he would make the club because he is the only reserve with experience at guard and center. Mruczkowski also played both spots, but simply didn’t outperform Hochstein. Only one defensive back was let go, which leaves the Patriots deep at both corner and safety. The corners on the final roster include Randall Gay, Asante Samuel, Duane Starks, Ellis Hobbs, Chad Scott and Tyrone Poole while the safeties include Rodney Harrison, Eugene Wilson, Guss Scott and James Sanders. None of those players was expected to be let go, although Chad Scott played his way onto the roster this summer. There seemed an outside shot that Starks could be in trouble given that he didn’t distinguish himself before being injured in the preseason opener. But his proven playmaking ability and the fact that New England dealt a third round pick to the Cardinals for him kept him safe. Here is an alphabetical look of the 17 players released today to get to the final 53-man roster:Linebacker Eric Alexander, defensive lineman Rodney Bailey, running back Kory Chapman, wideout Bam Childress, fullback Kyle Eckel, tight end Joel Jacobs, guard Victor Leyva, guard Gene Mruczkowski, tackle Jeff Roehl, wideout P.K. Sam, linebacker Grant Steen, defensive lineman Tom Sverchek, wideout David Terrell, linebacker Andre Torrey, safety Raymond Ventrone, tight end Jed Weaver and guard Billy Yates.

The Giants said goodbye to 18 players and hello to one today as they made the roster moves that enabled them to reach the regular-season roster limit of 53 players.Among those released were linebacker Kevin Lewis, who started all 16 games at middle linebacker last season; quarterback Jesse Palmer, who had been with the team since 2001; offensive lineman Wayne Lucier, who started 20 of 27 games in which he played in his two seasons with the Giants; and Mark Jones, the team’s punt returner in 2004.The Giants also announced the signing of Chad Morton, a veteran running back who can return punts and kickoffs. All four of the team’s draft choices made the team: Corey Webster, Justin Tuck, Brandon Jacobs and Eric Moore. So did three rookie free agents: defensive end Adrian Awasom, linebacker Chase Blackburn and safety James Butler.Technically, the contracts of Lewis, Palmer, running back Michael Cloud and offensive lineman Lewis Kelly were terminated. The players who were waived include Lucier and fellow offensive linemen Brandon Winey, Morgan Pears and Myniya Smith, running back Ryan Grant, wide receivers Jones, Ataveus Cash and Michael Jennings, tight end Darius Williams, defensive linemen Jonas Seawright and Raheem Orr, linebackers James Maxwell and T.J. Hollowell, and safety Curry Burns.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Terry Pierce knew the end was near. The third-year linebacker started and played throughout Friday night's game against the Arizona Cardinals. But he was aware of the chances of being released, and his fears were realized Saturday when the Broncos waived him and 18 other players at the final roster cutdown."I kind of knew that was going to happen with the way we were running our 'D,'" Pierce said as he stopped in his car before driving away from Dove Valley for the final time as a Bronco. "I talked to Mike (Shanahan), and he told me he didn't want to put me in the situation I was in last year, where the possibilities of playing weren't going to be very high.""He was in trade talks, and the timing just wasn't right with the trade, so he said it would be better to release me and have me go play somewhere rather than keep me here and be a backup or deactivated all season."The other 18 players released included guard Tyson Clabo, offensive tackle Anthony Clement, cornerback Curome Cox, defensive tackles Dorsett Davis and Mario Fatafehi, running back Quentin Griffin, defensive end Aaron Hunt, safety Jeremy LeSueur, wide receiver Triandos Luke, quarterback Matt Mauck, fullback Brandon Miree, offensive linemen Chris Myers and Ben Nowland, defensive end Anton Palepoi, offensive tackle Erik Pears, linebacker Jashon Sykes and guards Chris Watton and Zach Wilson.Griffin, like Pierce, was a part of the 2003 draft class; he was selected two rounds after the fellow Big 12 standout. Griffin posted two 100-yard rushing games in his career -- at Indianapolis on Dec. 12, 2003 and against Kansas City on Sept. 12, 2004 -- but lost his starting job after suffering an ankle injury late in an Oct. 3, 2004 win at Tampa Bay. Reuben Droughns stepped into the lineup for Griffin a week later and ran for 193 yards; by the time Griffin returned to health, the job belonged to Droughns.Three weeks after the Tampa Bay game, another injury dealt Griffin a career-altering blow -- a torn anterior cruciate ligament at Cincinnati. Griffin didn't return to the field until mini-camp this past July and didn't run in the preseason until the second half of last week's game against the Indianapolis Colts."I was surprised, but it's part of the business," Griffin said. "You've got to keep on moving."The releases of Fatafehi and Sykes meant that the Broncos said goodbye to two full-time starters during the team's 2003 run to its first playoff berth in three years. Sykes arrived as an undrafted free agent in 2002, while Fatafehi was a training-camp addition a year later. Fatafehi remained an integral part of the defensive-line rotation last fall, while Sykes spent most of 2004 as a game-day inactive.Fatafehi battled a sprained knee during training camp and the preseason; he incurred the injury during goal-line drills at practice the morning of Aug. 6 and missed the following two-plus weeks before returning prior to the 37-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts."My injury didn’t help me," he said. "I to come back and play hard, but it’s a business ... I enjoyed my time here; (it's a) great place to play and I wish them luck."The Broncos also kept two quarterbacks at the final cutdown for a second straight year; going with Bradlee Van Pelt and Jake Plummer. Mauck was released after playing the a quarter and a half during the Friday night win at Arizona, although he told reporters as he pulled away from Broncos headquarters that the practice squad was a possibility if he cleared waivers. He has one more year of practice-squad eligibility remaining."I've enjoyed being here and hopefully I'll stay here," Mauck said. But for now, Mauck is on the outside looking in, like 18 others.

The Rams announced their final 12 cuts Saturday, a day before the deadline and have established their roster for the season opener on Sept. 11 at San Francisco. The cuts follow the team’s final preseason game, a 27-23 win against the Chiefs at the Edward Jones Dome on Friday night. The list of cuts contained only a couple of mild surprises for a team that seems focused on building depth defensively and on special teams. The list of cuts includes: offensive linemen Darnell Alford, Toby Cecil and Larry Turner, defensive tackles Jeremy Calahan and John Parrella, receivers Dominique Thompson and Jeremy Carter, quarterback Jeff Smoker, running back Dusty McGrorty, safety Michael Stone and fullback Joey Goodspeed. Goodspeed and Turner are probably the only players that came as mild surprises of the group, but it appears they were pinched out by the numbers game that often eliminates many players from a roster. Goodspeed engaged in a preseason battle with rookie Madison Hedgecock. It was unclear who was leading that battle until the past week when Hedgecock made an impressive touchdown catch and continued to prove himself as a dominant special teams player. Turner, on the other hand, came as slightly more of a surprise as the Rams decided to keep just nine offensive linemen (not including unsigned third-round pick Richie Incognito).

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Saturday that the club has traded LB Scott Fujita to the Dallas Cowboys for a sixth-round draft pick in 2006 and a conditional draft pick in 2007.

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Saturday that the club had made several transactions to meet the NFL’s mandatory 53-man roster deadline. The club’s 2005 roster includes 13 players who were not on the club’s 53-man roster at any time during the 2004 season. The Chiefs placed T Brett Williams on the Reserve/Injured List and terminated the contracts of CB Ashley Ambrose and QB Jonathan Quinn. The club also released the following players: T Thomas Barnett, WR John Booth, RB Dee Brown, S Scott Connot, DT Arrion Dixon, CB Alphonso Hodge, QB James Kilian, WR Jeris McIntyre, DE Clint Mitchell, DT Montique Sharpe, RB McKenzi Smith, TE Edwin Thompson, WR Craphonso Thorpe and DE Zach Ville.

The Tennessee Titans waived eight players: QB Chris Redman, S Norman LeJeune, S Arturo Freeman, RB Larry Croom, S Marcus Randall, S Marcus White, FB Robert Douglas and RB Jarrett Payton. Additionally, the Titans waived S Sam Massey and RB Joe Smith from the NFL Europe League injured list. The Titans also traded LB Rocky Calmus to the Indianapolis Colts for an undisclosed draft pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. The moves reduce the Titans roster to 53, plus one roster exemption for T Brad Hopkins, who is suspended for week one of the season.

One of the most difficult days of the year is over for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. By releasing 21 players and putting one more on injured reserve, the Bucs got down to the NFL’s regular-season roster limit by Saturday’s 6:00 p.m. ET deadline. The construction of the 2005 roster is not necessarily over; in fact, that process usually continues throughout the season. But the Bucs are down to the necessary 53 players after beginning the day at 75 (the 76th player on the roster, S Claudius Osei, is exempt and will remain as a ninth practice-squad player, ineligible to play in games). There were, obviously, some very difficult decisions made on Saturday. Most notable among the 22 players removed from the active roster were veteran tackle Derrick Deese, third-year tight end Will Heller and linebacker Jeff Gooch, who was placed on injured reserve. Of those 22, 16 were either rookies or first-year players. However, in a series of moves that reflects well on the team’s college scouting, 11 of the 12 players drafted by the Buccaneers in April made the team. That means over one-fifth of the current roster is comprised of rookies. Here’s how the Bucs met the 53-man limit:Player Pos. Exp. Move Hamza Abdullah S R Waived Josh Buhl LB 1 Waived Jonathan Clinkscale G/C R Waived Delbert Cowsette DE 3 Waived Derrick Deese T 14 Termination of Vested Veteran Todd France K 1 Waived Jeff Gooch LB 10 Placed on Injured Reserve Matt Grootegoed LB R Waived Will Heller TE 3 Waived Scott Jackson C 1 Waived Sam Lightbody T R Waived Derek McCoy WR 1 Waived Terrance Metcalf WR 1 Waived James Patrick CB R Waived Kalvin Pearson S 1 Waived DeAndrew Rubin WR 1 Waived Josh Savage DE 2 Waived Bryan Save DT 1 Waived Brian Simnjanovski P 1 Waived Jermaine Taylor LB 1 Waived Derek Watson RB 1 Waived Andrew Williams DE 3 Waived While the younger players were simply waived, Deese was terminated as a vested veteran. The primary difference between those two categories is that Deese is not subject to the waiver-claim process as are the rest of the players; he immediately becomes a free agent.Saturday’s moves were about securing places on the roster, not necessarily starting spots or other specific roles. However, at least one move revealed the winner of a particular job. By waiving France, the team tabbed Bryant as its kicker for 2005. This was a job won by Bryant, not lost by France, as both kickers were outstanding during the preseason and most of training camp.Whether or not it factored into the final decision, the Bucs went with the more experienced kicker. Bryant held the New York Giants’ kicking job in 2002 and 2003, making 80% of his field goals over that two-year span. He also had brief stops in Miami and Indianapolis during the regular season last fall. During the preseason, which was completed with Thursday’s win over Houston, Bryant made four of his five field goal tries, including a 52-yarder against the Texans and an overtime game-winner against Tennessee. The other position that had drawn a lot of interest over the last six weeks was wide receiver, where the team had a solid top three followed by an intriguing group of young receivers. Among the young candidates were three 2005 draft choices, fifth-rounder Larry Brackins and seventh-rounders Paris Warren and J.R. Russell. Brackins didn’t play much during the preseason due to a June hamstring injury, but Warren and Russell saw a lot of action and definitely had their moments. Russell led the team during the preseason with 11 catches and 139 receiving yards, and Warren snared a team-high two touchdown passes while averaging 24.7 yards per catch. In the end, the Bucs found a way to keep all of their drafted receivers, giving them seven total heading into the regular season. While the team might more commonly keep six receivers among its 53, the coaches had hoped to get more special teams contributions out of the offensive skill positions this year, primarily at receiver and running back. The Bucs also kept six running backs, three each at the fullback (Mike Alstott, Jameel Cook, Rick Razzano) and tailback (Carnell Williams, Michael Pittman, Earnest Graham) positions.Shepherd, originally an undrafted free agent out of San Jose State in 2002, is on an opening-day active roster for the first time in his career, though it is an achievement that might have come a year earlier if not for an injury. Shepherd was having an outstanding camp in 2004 before a foot injury in the preseason opener pushed him to injured reserve. At the time, he seemed like a good bet to make the final roster. This year, considering the youth of the other receivers kept by the team, he appears to have the inside track at the fourth receiver spot, which would keep him on the 45-man active list on game day.]One of the less recognized but perhaps more intense battles was at tight end, where first-year player Nate Lawrie has apparently unseated Heller. Lawrie was a sixth-round draft pick in 2004 while Heller made the team as an undrafted rookie in 2003 and has made some important contributions over the last two years. Both players finished the preseason strong on Thursday, Heller by catching three passes for 45 yards and Lawrie by hauling in a 20-yard touchdown pass. With the free-agent signing of Anthony Becht and the drafting of Alex Smith in the third round in April, the Bucs will start 2005 with a completely different tight end corps than it had to begin 2004.

The Detroit Lions announced today that they have released 18 players, trimming the team's roster to the NFL-mandated 53-man limit. NFL rosters needed to meet the maximum of 53 players by the 6 p.m. ET deadline. The following players were released today: CB Chris Cash, LB Johnathan Goddard, S Andrew Guman, WR Paris Hamilton, C/G Tyrone Hopson, T Jason Jimenez, DT Brandon Kennedy, WR David Kircus, WR Glen Martinez, FB Will Matthews, QB Todd Mortensen, G Rob Murphy, DE Eric Powell, TE Jason Randall, T Victor Rogers, CB Jeff Sanchez, WR Scottie Vines and RB Jamel White.S Cliff Johnson, who had been listed on the Lions' training camp roster, is on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury NFL Europe list.

The Bears reached the NFL's mandatory 53-man roster limit Saturday by waiving linebacker Jeremy Cain, offensive tackle Rob Droege, fullback Thump Belton and offensive lineman Anthony Oakley. Cain is the only one of the four to have played in a regular season game for the Bears, appearing in four contests primarily on special teams late last year after being promoted from the practice squad. Droege failed to unseat Marc Colombo as the third tackle behind starters John Tait and Fred Miller. The Bears chose to keep Qasim Mitchell, whose versatility enables him to back up at both tackle and guard. The Bears opted to keep only one fullback in Marc Edwards, although tight end Gabe Reid is capable of filling in after taking reps there during training camp and the preseason. Fullbacks Bryan Johnson (foot) and Jason McKie (pectoral muscle) both are ineligible to play in the first five games, but could bolster the position later in the season. Players believed to be on the bubble who made the team included wide receiver Carl Ford, defensive lineman Darrell Campbell, cornerbacks Rashied Davis and Jerrell Pippens and safety Brandon McGowan. Chicago's roster actually stands at 54, with an exemption for recently-signed rookie Cedric Benson due to expire on Sept. 12 or earlier if the first-round pick is activated for the Sept. 11 opener in Washington.

Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said this is the toughest time of the season, and after much agonizing all day Friday and most of the day on Saturday, he trimmed 17 guys from his roster to reach the NFL-mandated 53-player limit by the 5 p.m. deadline on Saturday. The Cowboys appear close to signing free-agent wide receiver Peerless Price. The six-year veteran, who met with Parcells Friday morning, is expected to sign a one-year deal this weekend. Price's best season came in 2002 with the Bills, catching 94 passes for 1,252 yards and nine touchdowns with Drew Bledsoe as his quarterback. Price was released by the Falcons this week after two years in Atlanta. Most notable among the 15 players cut were deep snapper Jeff Robinson, defensive tackle Leo Carson, safety Lynn Scott and offensive linemen Kurt Vollers, and Tyson Walter. Also, the Cowboys traded for Kansas City linebacker Scott Fujita, a fourth-year veteran who led the Chiefs in tackles the last two seasons. But Fujita, who has 41 career starts in 48 games, was likely expendable after Kansas City drafted former Texas Longhorn Derrick Johnson. The Cowboy sent the Chiefs a sixth-round pick in 2006 and a conditional pick in 2007. Plus, the Cowboys decided to place rookie safety Justin Beriault and outside linebacker Kalen Thornton on season-ending injured reserve, enabling them to retain their rights for next year. Beriault likely will have surgery to repair damaged meniscus in his right knee that has been bothering him most of the summer. Thornton has been limited nearly all summer by a bad knee. Here is a list of the players the Cowboys released: RB Erik Bickerstaff DT Leo Carson SS Rich Coady WR Tom Crowder TE Tony Curtis SS Woody Dantzler RB Keylon Kincade PK Nick Novak LB Keith O'Neil DS Jeff Robinson TE Sean Ryan OL Matt Tarullo OT Kurt Vollers OL Tyson Walter FS Lynn Scott Place on Injured Reserve SS Justin Beriault LB Kalen Thornton Traded For: OLB Scott Fujita (from Kansas City)

Veterans Joe Maese and Wade Richey and tight end Trent Smith were among 17 players cut by the Ravens on Saturday as the team trimmed its roster to reach the NFL limit of 53.

Maese, a sixth-round pick by the Ravens in 2001, spent five years with the franchise but lost his job as long-snapper to rookie free agent Matt Katula.

Also released were defensive backs Bill Alford, Calvin Carlyle, Mark Estelle, Zach Norton and Jamaine Winborne, offensive linemen Dante Ellington, Phil Hawkins and Thatcher Szalay, defensive tackle Matt Zelinski, running back Alex Haynes and linebacker Matt Sinclair.
