Someone get Ashley Lelie a towel, PLEASE! (1 Viewer)

Lelie, who is sitting out the team's off-season conditioning program because of his desire to be traded to a team that would allow him to compete as the No. 1 receiver, has much different plans. They include him possibly staying away until deep into the regular season.

The fourth-year pro watched during draft weekend as his primary goal to compete for a No. 1 receiving job slipped further away.

The Broncos were asking for a second-round pick for Lelie but kept him.

Then, after acquiring Walker, the Broncos put the former Green Bay Packers player on the verge of a rich, six-year contract.

That has locked Lelie into what he now believes is an untenable position as the team's third receiver. Nothing more. Nothing less.

And given Lelie's belief in himself, it's something he can't stand for.

"I don't believe I'm a third wideout. I can't believe that. I'm not going to believe that until I physically prove that on the field evenly and fairly on the field," said Lelie, who Sunday made his first public comments of the off-season. "But now I don't have that chance here."

Lelie stressed it isn't about being afraid of competition. His beef is the playing field no longer is fair, given the multimillion-deal Walker is close to signing, one that could include as much as $10 million in guarantees.

If Walker were playing out the final year of his contract, which he would have if a new contract had not been negotiated after the Broncos obtained him Saturday for a second-round pick, Lelie said he would feel he was getting a fairer shake.

But that's not the case.

"He's got all this money up front and got a big contract, and you really think they gave him all that just to put him on the bench?" Lelie said.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOL! What a dum-dum. What did he think was going to happen? He's a 1-dimensional WR who caught exactly 1 TD last year. So he makes his ultimatum & gets called on it, and now he's shocked?

:lmao:

Terry became Teresa. What does Ashley become?

For the math majors:

Terry:Teresa = Ashley:?

Mem to Ashley;

1. You've had your chance. You have proven to be nothing more than a moderately effective number two receiver.

2. No team is going to sign you to be their number one receiver.

3. You have a girls' name.

Thank you. Have a nice day.

Trade him to the Bills. I love Evans but he isn't a proven #1 and we have no proven #2 on the roster either. Seems like it could fit. After all, being a #2 or possibly #1 is better than a #3 :)

The problem with Lelie is the same a lot of players have these days. He would rather be a number one receiver on a bad team that stay with a potentially great team and be a role player. In other words, he is more concerned with his playing time than with winning. The Broncos were in the AFC title game last year and one could argue they are very close to being a championship-caliber team, but does Lelie care? Nope. All he cares about is how much he is going to play.

And someone should tell him that if he came to camp, worked his butt off and improve as a player, Mike Shanahan would find a way to get him on the field. If you can produce, Shanahan will put you out there. He won't just let a number three guy sit on the bench if he thinks he can make an impact. The reason Denver has always featured just two WR's under Shanahan is because they have never really had a consistent number three receiver under Shanahan.

"If you back away from competition," Shanahan said Saturday, "you shouldn't be the guy anyway."

That quote was in response to a question about Plummer/Cutler but I think it applies to Lelie as well.

So who gives Lelie a chance after he sits out all year? Chiefs maybe?

Not trying to defend Lelie, he put up disappointing numbers last year. But after seeing Shanny hang Plummer out to dry- a guy who was supposed to be the next great thing in Denver, and led the team to the title game last year in a great and mistake free season, team loyalty would take a hit.

Maybe I am just venting at what I feel is an idiotic draft choice in Cutler. A proven talent versus a gamble when your team is that close to the superbowl at a position that can destroy the team in the hands of a rookie/or bust, but can still win with a caretaker QB.

In the last 25 years, the teams that have won a superbowl with a QB they drafted in the 1st round:

2 (Ben and Troy)

Plummer is not getting hung out to dry he is the QB of the now and Cutler is the QB of the future. Plummer barring terrible play will have every opportunity with a SB caliber team to lead the Broncos to a SB for the next couple of years while Cutler is being groomed to take over for him. Plummer is 32 years of age and the Broncos are capable of winning the SB with Jake, but he is not getting any younger. This was a great move by the Broncos. If you are a Broncos fan be happy that they are looking towards not only the now but the future as well.

You're assuming Plummer will be riding the pine and watching ar ookie run the team. That's not happening unless injuries force the issue.

Are you kidding me???Ron Jaworski LOVED Cutler. Broke down every snap of his college career and said he was the best of the rooks. Steve Young agreed. Mike Martz the QB guru says Cutler was the best and it wasn't even close. Consider yourself lucky Shanahan traded up to get him. I've loved Plummer for years, but finally came to the realization he's not a championship QB. And I'll trust Shanahan to make the switch at the right time.

Rod Smith is 36 years old. If Lelie want's to start he should beat out the old man, compete with Walker for the #1 slot and play good football. If it works out, He becomes half of one of the most dominating young cast of wide outs this side of Fitz and Boldin. Probably better than Fitz and Boldin. Maybe someday Holt and Bruce. See the big picture young receivers. wide receivers are irritating some times.

Now that is going a little far. Lee Lee is no where near as talented as Boldin or Fitz. Not even close. I would argue that Walker is no where near as good as Boldin or Fitz. Walker has had one good season, ONE, he isn't a star or a stud, he is a guy who had one good year. Lee Lee is a decent talent but to give him that kind of credit is a little ridiculous until he shows something.

Except Stinkston has no illusions that he is a #1 WR for any NFL Team...

Serves Denver right. They have been among the enablers of the whinney W.R. phenomenon. When T.O. and Javon were doing their acts Denver made it clear that they had value monitarily to other teams, but not truely in draft compensation. They let it be known that T.O. or Walker would be welcomed, and then they actually lowballed the Packers for Walker in their quiet conspiracy to get what they wanted. Well now the chickens have come home to roost. If Walker, injured, was worth a second rounder then a healthy Lelie ought to fetch, I don't know, maybe a bag of semi-worn punting balls.

I hope the Packers offer a 7th round choice next year for Lelie. I hope they get him so that we can truely cage the Favre effect on receivers numbers. I figure Walker's numbers will drop now that Plummer is throwing to him, and if favre could make Bradfordm Schroeder, and FBOC put up numbers he ought to make Lelie look better than he has by a long shot.

???? Ashley is a one dimensional player. He has good speed, and decent hands. Insulting to put his name in a comparision to Holt, or Bruce.

I am suprised he got far enough away from a defending cornerback to go ahead and fire his agent. Maybe he could fire his hands too, they seem to let him down alot as well.
