Someone Shot My Inlaws Dog (1 Viewer)

I don't have many details yet but my inlaws live on a 60 acre farm in rural Ontario.  They found the dog injured and thought he'd been attacked by coyotes but when he emerged from emergency surgery a couple of hours ago, the surgeon said he thought the dog had been shot with BBs.  They're worried about spinal damage.  ####### #######(s).

What kind of dog? I could see someone shooting an unknown pit, doberman,  even a German Shepherd.

A lab? Shi-tzu? Corgi? Then the neighbors are a holes.

I'm sorry the dog got shot.

Shot with BB's = a hole kids.  Guaranteed.
If they're in farm country, then it's very possible that the shooter was a farmer who didn't want the dog to bother his livestock. Be thankful the dog isn't dead, because a lot of farmers will kill a nuisance dog on sight.

Luckily my wife's there helping her mother recover from shoulder replacement surgery.

They know their neighbors and I don't think the dog goes off their property.

More likely, IMO, are trespassers.

Our Weim is a rescue, and we got him at 4 years old.  After having him around two years, he needed some X-rays.  It was at this point we were told there was a BB in his abdomen for most likely many years.

#### people.

Title punctuation is lacking so is this...

Someone shot my in-laws' dog.

or

Someone show my in-laws, dog.

Either way, sorry to hear it.  Unless it's #2 and you happen to hate your in-laws.

Somewhere on this site, there is a good list of suspects who say they would shoot a dog before shooting a stranger.  I would start there.

Could be.  My wife just said that the surgeon mentioned BBs.
It would still seem like it'd have to be from a shotgun shell.

I don't know a ton about BB guns, but it would seem like a very difficult task for a stranger to get multiple BB's to puncture a dog's skin. After getting hit by the first shot, I'd think the dog would take off running away from the shooter. At the point, landing more shots, I'd think would be nearly impossible.

But for the dog to be lying down, seriously wounded, a shotgun would seem far more likely.

Anyway, I'm very sorry to hear that and I hope the dog recovers well. This is just ####### awful.

I lived among farms in SW Colorado for a little while when at school. One day not long after we got there the two huskies and a shep/lab mix jumped the fence and chased the neighbors cows. He came out and fired a shotgun into the air a few times. He came over later after we got the dogs back ten kinds of pissed off saying the next time there would be no warning shots. It is legal in Colorado to shoot dogs on your property if you have cattle. We set up pulleys for them after that. Would have had to anyway as it snowed so much there that they could eventually just walk over the top of the fence.

I'm going with shotgun too for many of the same reasons listed above.

Here's Jake after surgery late last night.

There was an entry and exit wound and only one projectile that hit the dog. To me, that screams rifle. I really don't know why the surgeon said it looks like a BB.  The surgeon also said that she typically sees these type of injuries on reservations--the closest reservation is 50+ miles away

There aren't any farms in the immediate area that have livestock. They know almost all of their immediate neighbors including the deputy mayor of London, Ontario. There is one new neighbor who recently moved in.

I told them they absolutely need to report this to the police as there was another dog shot several years ago.

There are some serious air rifles around today. Could've been a .22 though I guess

Glad their dog is ok

Chet glad to hear the dog is doing ok.

I ####### hate people lately, I read about the following this morning:

Authorities in North Carolina are asking for help after seven dogs were found shot and killed along a rural road outside Charlotte.

The Union County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that the dogs were found with broken necks Friday. Deputies say the dogs had been there for some time.

News outlets report the canines were hunting dogs and none of them had a microchip that could be used to trace them back to an owner.

Pawsitive Impact NC Dog Rescue, a North Carolina-based rescue group, wrote on its Facebook page that it posthumously named each of the dead dogs to give them some dignity.

Yup.  Even something like this could've done it if it was close enough range.

A single BB pass-through wasn't a shotgun unless the dog was super lucky and only caught a stray BB.

Glad to see Jake is on his feet!

Will he be able to walk OK?

If the dog is able to run free at times, how would you know it doesn't go off the property?  I'm not saying someone had a right to shoot it or at it, but thankfully it's still alive.  Maybe they should keep it on leash or in a fenced yard.

A BB rifle isn't going to make a pass through.  It was probably a bad shot with a shotgun considering you said multiple BBs in one of your posts.

I carry a small CO2 BB pistol while hunting as I got tired of the neighbors dogs running around free during hunting season.  Mine won't break the skin, however.

They filed a police report. The officer said it was a 22.

The round hit his spine but he seems to be walking fine.

Wear your scarlet letter proudly, stranger voters.

awwwwww... cute puppers.  I'm really happy it wasn't fatal.  That really is some BS.

We found out that a neighbor mistook the dog for a coyote and shot him with a 22. ####### idiot. He said he didn't think he hit anything. He also said the shot was about 500 yards into a corn field.  Apparently, he was almost in tears. However, it's better than having a psychopath wandering their property.

Hope his wallet flows as freely as those tears when it comes time to pay the vet bill.

Can a .22 even make 500 yards?
Absolutely.  It shouldn't ever be attempted, and I suspect the dog was much closer than that or he would barely have been able to see it, but it can be done.  If he mistook that dog for a coyote, even with a scope, then it was an irresponsible shot.

But if it was a coyote or some other predator, that's an impressive hit.

Maybe he was shooting at the coyote at 500 yards but didn't see the dog at 200 yards and is just a terrible shot!
