Maybe he was shooting at the coyote at 500 yards but didn't see the dog at 200 yards and is just a terrible shot!

Absolutely.  It shouldn't ever be attempted, and I suspect the dog was much closer than that or he would barely have been able to see it, but it can be done.

Yeah, no kidding. Was getting ready to ask if the shooter had a guard tower on his property or something. 500 yards? Corn field? Dude could not have had a visual if that description is accurate.

I'm just speaking to the distance that a .22 round can cover.  I'm not suggesting that it's a reasonable shot.  In fact that was my point.

Wasn't laughing at you... laughing at the neighbor that said he shot it from 500 yards..    CAN a .22 bullet travel that far?  Sure...  Can anybody other than Bob Lee Swaggart hit a house from that far?  Doubtful...    at 500 yards you are talking about a 40' drop...

But if it was a coyote or some other predator, that's an impressive hit.

The best marksman in the world couldn't make the shot.  ~700 inches of drop at 500y.
