Sometimes, you just have to laugh at family leagues. (1 Viewer)

So a friends and family league commished by a family member decided to 'mix it up' this year and make the draft non-snaking. You know, just to try something different. And not based on last year's rankings - draft order is based on the order in which you signed up. Oh, and guess who just HAPPENS to be the first person to sign up and get the #1 pick? That's right, the commish! Naturally, I pick 11th. When I pointed out that this was just a TEENSY bit unfair, she pointed out how 'unfair' it is that the #1 pick doesn't choose again until #24 in a snake-style draft. (Never mind, I suppose, that in this system the #12 pick doesn't go again until #24 - and doesn't also get the #25 pick.)

I don't care enough about this league (and DO care enough about family relations) to raise a big stink about this, so I'm letting it go. No money is at stake, it's family, etc. But I have to shake my head and laugh at the ballsiest move I've EVER seen a commish pull.

I think I see the problem here.

Yes, it is quite the ballsy move! But I would look at it as a challenge...since I am guessing you play in other leagues and this one is just for fun, make it a challenge. Trade your top 2 picks and try to stockpile picks in the 3-5 rounds...if you spend time around here, you know you can get a decent starting lineup if you have 6-8 picks in those rounds and I am guessing "Uncle Frank" is not going to be a beast on the WW. I did a league like this with neighborhood guys about 7 years back and ended up with a top 3 pick...I just ripped through the league...not much fun at all.

That's exactly how I'm approaching it, as a challenge. Don't know if trading draft picks is a possibility but I'm more determined than ever to put together a competitive team. Ironically, this will probably make me try harder in this league than I do most years, where I'm more focused on money leagues.

Don't try too hard, because if you win I think she might let the team who signs up first get the first 16 picks.

I shudder to think what will happen when she doesn't win the league. She will likely use it as proof that this method is fair.

That's how MLB defends the Yankees' and Red Sox' ability to sign all the top FA's every year.

What took you so long to sign up?

Tell another family member to burst out on a fake laughing rant for a couple minutes straight when she tells them about her idea. Then go tell her to run it past the other guy.

Just roll them, please.

And please post the Commish's and your drafted teams. I'm genuinely interested in how this unfolds, although I agree with Jersey35 that it will embolden her and she'll be more convinced than ever that it's fair. :loco:
