Culpepper expected to sign

Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on July 31st, 2007

Leave it to the Raiders to think big.

A source familiar with the situation said the Raiders are expected to sign free agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper today.

With the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, the Raiders signed JaMarcus Russell, who is 6-foot-5 and in the 250-pound range. Culepper is the only quarterback on the market with comparable size, at 6-foot-4 and a listed weight of 265 pounds.

Coach Lane Kiffin confirmed Sunday night Culpepper was being brought in for a workout. He also said the Raiders had already seen Culpepper recently.

With Russell out, the Culpepper would join Josh McCown and Andrew Walter, who have been splitting quarterback reps with the first team. It's been a relatively even competition, with Walter faring better in the pocket and McCown excelling on the move.

Questions remain about Culpepper's skills following a serious knee injury in Minnesota. Should he sign, all parties are likely to say Culpepper has a clean bill of health _ which is what happened last season in Miami when the Dolphins were forced to switch quarterbacks after four games.

More as news develops from Napa . . .

THe C-Pep signing (if it happens) is interesting. Al Davis loves BIG arms and C-Pep definitely has that. It also gives the Raiders three arms in camp while they work out the Russell deal.

If C-Pep can play, I would guess that McCown or Walters become expendable at some point later - maybe possible trade bait for a late round pick.

As much as I am down on CPep, I have to think that if he's anywhere NEAR healthy that he's an upgrade to McCown/Walters.

I remember speculation that this would happen around draft time.

 CPep would thrive in that offense I think, although that poor offensive line may kill him. It is worth a flyer late at least.
Russell is somewhat of a project IMHO...I wouldn't be surprised if a 100% Culpepper beats him out in '08. Phillip Rivers had to sit for a few years and he was less of a project IMHO.

I agree that Russell is somewhat of a project, but the Rivers comparison is a bad one. He sat more due to the fact that Brees lit it up and much less due to developmental needs. If Brees didn't play so well, Rivers would have played much earlier on.

I didn't say the situations are identical...I was merely pointing out that it's not unheard of to have a rookie QB sit out more than one season when you have a capable QB starting.

Culpepper behind that Oline? Yikes for his knee.
I was thinking the same, didn't Oakland lead the NFL in sacks allowed last year? (or at least in the top 5) With Peppers knee he not going to last long behind that O-line.
Not only that, but Culpepper has never shown an ability to make quick decisions. If he doesn't have a good offensive line, he's a turnover machine.
On the bright side, at least he won't be cursed to use the three-step drop that Art Shell had so much success with last year.

Give me McCown over THAT Culpepper anyday.
I agreeI think he can be pretty good. Not great but he sure can sling it. If he can put up some nice #s they could have some trade bait too.
I'm with you guys, McCown any day ... Culpepper needs to sit back and wait, after the first couple of weeks of preseason, some team, unfortunatley, will lose a QB for the season or a significant amount time and be desperate enough to want damaged goods. I'm not sure if Culpepper can pass a physical???
