SP Mock Invitational--5th round? Uh huh....5th round...... (1 Viewer)

Also, for as much as the DTs are great in this draft, there aren't many 4-3 DEs.  Not that I think Spence is a 4-3 end......

1.08 - Ronnie Stanley, OT

2.01 - Will Fuller, WR

Thoughts on the first 2 picks? I'm in love w the first pick. Many are real high on Fuller, and I personally like him... I just dont LOVE him. The objective was Coleman, and in all honesty, Coleman would be a Brown (someone checked their PM after making their pick, and said they would have made the trade).. but oh well.

There were a few names I was considering at 2.01, but the Browns need weapons for RG3 if they are truly content on giving him the opportunity to be a franchise QB (and they obv are doing that)

If Gordon gets reinstated, absolute gravy on the cake.. and if not, Fuller was the most WR1 type player left in the draft, so it had to be done.

I think you did well, especially since it doesn't look good for Gordon and because Fuller idolizes AB so he obviously makes good decisions.

It's gotta be for Cook, right? I can't see any other reason why the Giants would pay that price unless it's to jump the Niners specifically.

An early 3rd to move down 4 spots in the 2nd?   I mean, good on Ozzie for pulling that off, but ... wow.
To be honest, there were two players I really wanted on the board. So I did think about it. Definitely have to do a bunch of digging on some more players now. I feel like I might have passed on some high end talent for role players. But Newsome has a quote about hitting doubles that I'm trying to use as my "draft strategy."

Love the idea of pairing him with Buckner.
Same here.  This would give the Chargers a great core at DL of Liuget, Mebane, Buckner, and Bullard, a huge improvement over recent years.

I would have taken Kelly if available, but none of the other centers are as compelling IMO.

When I was considering drafting this pick if you were MIA, I went looking for Kelly.  Forgot he went in the 1st.

Meh.  There's a ton of centers in this draft, compared to years past.  SD can get one later.  Kelly isn't some generational talent.

Did you have to trade up for him?  Just not sure he'd have been taken and you gave up a lot...
Not sure if i HAD to, but thats what I did. If he can stay out of trouble i still believe he is the top 10 guy he was projected to be previously. Was a gamble, high risk high reward scenario

Agreed. I was happy Kelly went one pick before me so I could choose between Coleman and Billings. I'd have considered Kelly in the 2nd, but there are plenty more good centers later. Kalil is getting up there, so a C would be an option if they fall to BPA, which they usually do.

2.37 San Francisco selects Indiana OT Jason Spriggs

commentary to follow (don't want to hold spidey up)
The top 5 on my board were Spence,Nkemdiche, Spriggs, and Cook.  We can upgrade almost anywhere.

To address the elephant in the room, I personally don't like Cook.  A QB who is not accurate can not be taught to be accurate IMO.  He is not a fit for Chip's system.  On the other hand, believe it or not (and I can't believe I'm typing this), Gabbert showed something last year.  Guy played pretty decent.  I would actually prefer Gabbert to Cook.  Wow, yes.  Time will tell, I'm probably wrong....but I think this is a Philadelphia 76er / Cleveland Brown type season for SF and we will give Gabb a shot and if he fails go QB next year.

Spriggs immediately starts on the right side of the line.  Pears was terrible last year and should be cut.  Trent Brown is a 7th round project from Florida who might develop into a swing tackle at best.  The village idiot Balke is playing games with RT Anthony Davis, who might not return.

It was tough to bypass a certain WR who projects to a WR1, but again, personal preference was to strengthen the OL.

2.36 NYG selects Robert Nkemdiche
I think he is a good fit for the Vikings defense and should be a very nice addition to the Giants as well.

I don't know much about the character concerns and I think he may have been drafted sooner if not for that. This is an area that the Vikings have been known to take players off their lists completely. I am not sure if that will be the case with Nkemdiche for them or not.

I think Stanley is a fine pick and needed with several quality offensive line leaving the Browns in free agency.

I do not like Will Fuller much but I think I may be too harsh on him. I disagree with the folks like Lance Zerlien (whos opinion I really respect) who consider him a 1st round prospect. I think he is too inconsistent with his catching to be considered that.

He seems like a complimentary and deep ball WR not a true WR 1 that the offense can be built around.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select:

Karl Joseph, S, WVU
Excellent pick. Best safety in this draft class by far in my opinion. Possibly worth a 1st round pick.

He wasn't even drafted in 3 rounds of the other recent mock draft like this.. so I thought he would be safe for me to wait until the second round for. Guess not.

Great pick.

Nice pick!

2.40 Baltimore Ravens select Kenny Clark, DT, UCLA

A nose tackle with a bit more juice in the passing game, he'll line up next to Brandon Willliams, and give the Ravens some serious beef up front.  Wrestling background.

The one I ran? Sure he was. Went at 2.19 to the Falcons.
