Sporting News Team RB Rankings (1 Viewer)

I was just reading the latest issue of the Sporting News and stumbled upon their Team RB Rankings.

A: SD, ARI, NYG, NO, SEA, WAS

A-: KC, PIT

B+: BUF, CIN, JAC, ATL, TB

B: BAL, CLE, HOU, NE, TEN, CHI, PHI

B-: DEN, MIA, DAL

C+: NYJ, CAR, DET, GB, STL

C: IND, OAK, MIN, SF

Given that the Cardinals ranked 32nd in rushing attempts, yards, ypc, and TD last year, I'm not sure that adding Edge merits an "A" for a grade.

Will never understand why a team like the Bears with 3 solid RB's end up with a B here. Even ESPN had them rated around 15th.

Arizona -- Nothing behind Edge. Buffalo -- Didn't McGahee just suck in 2005? Ant-Train is closer to being out of the league than productive in the NFL. Houston -- Isn't Dom still hurt?

ARI gets an A and Chicago is a B? They know nothing, absolutely nothing. These are TEAM rb rankings, right? Are they actually ######ed enough to think that ARI will outrush Chicago? Buffalo above Denver? JAX over Miami? What the hell kinda crack are they smoking over there?

I'd give Edge an A, but what about the backups?

Shipp, Arrington et al are at least a D given last year's body of work.

Let's say Edge gets 80% of RB touches as a "A" back (I'll give him a 95 out of 100 on his report card). Then Shipp and Arrington go for 20% as a "D" (60/100). So BusMan would give the Cards an 88; B/B+ at best.

Dang, Sporting News, you should hire me.

Kinda sounds like their grading the running game more than the running backs. Even though then it doesn't make much sense. More like the Sporting [bad] News. Sorry, had to do it. :nerd:

maybe it's the depth at Rb and not necessarily the running game itself. Even then, i still think Benson, Jones and Peterson >>>> Edge, Arrington and Shipp but I can see how it would be close

 Completely misses the point of what ESPN and TSN were doing.

Where did they say that the Cards would 'outrush' the Bears? This was about RB TALENT and depth, not who will run for more yards.

Edge + Arrington + Shipp >>>>>>> Jones + Benson + Peterson

FoxSports is actually running a great series of articles ranking teams by position. It's based on all the fancy stats from Football Outsiders, combined with common sense, offseason moves, and whatnot. As a result, I think it has a much stronger basis in reality. If you're interested, here are the links:QBs

RBs

WRs and TEs

OLs

If you're interested, they rank Arizona as the 11th best team by RBs, and the worst team in the NFL by OLs. They also point out that only 9% of Indianapolis's rushing yards came from 10+ yards beyond the LoS (worst in the league). They speculate that the OL is more responsible for what happens within 10 yards of the LoS, so the fact that they led the league in adjusted line yards (ypc with all carries over 10 yards being counted as 10 yard carries) and were last in the league in % of yards from 10+ yards out is a strong indication that a HUGE portion of Edgerrin's success was the result of the line, not of Edge himself. Perhaps moreso than any other RB in the entire NFL. Also, Arizona's line ranks dead last in every single run-blocking category they have, so it's not unreasonable to expect James to fall off the face of the planet this season.

B: BAL, CLE, HOU, NE, TEN, CHI, PHI

Bears a B ?

Please...Thomas Jones rushed for 1300 yards without a passing attack...Cedric Benson hardly played, and Adrian Peterson averaged 5 yards a carry last season. Now, the Bears should have some passing threat with Grossman, Benson more playing time with Jones, and all behind a pretty good offensive line.

AZ will out preform Chi in all phases of offense and will abuse them Monday night.

How is PIT an A-?
They only have Willie Parker(1 fairly good season) and Duce Staley(30+ and hasnt played much in 2 years)?
Verron Haynes is as good a #3 as there is in the NFL. Some including myself argue he should be a #2 ahead of Staley. Since it's TEAM rankings, it makes sense to see PIT with a high grade. I could see them as a B+, but if A- is wrong, it's not by much. Certainly not off by as much as several others (ARI, PHI, STL, CAR). I like how there's nothing lower than a C. Way to go out on a limb there!
