Just watched the new documentary "Reggie" about the life and career of Reggie Jackson.
I don't see a thread dedicated to the specific topic of Sports Documentaries, although I find it hard to believe there isn't one, so if there is, please direct me to it.

This new documentary featuring Reggie Jackson. Love him or hate him, this is a really well-done documentary.
I was never a fan of him as a player when he was with the Yankees. I always remember thinking of him as being a bad teammate. It's interesting to hear his side of some of Yankee clubhouse disruptions. I have developed a respect for him since he retired. He's very insightful and doesn't hold back speaking his truth.
Lots of good stories in this program regarding Charlie Finley, his A's teammates, Reggie's Dad, Hank Aaron, Billy Martin & Thurman Munson.

Highly recommend. And if you are a fan of baseball history, it's a must see. I loved it!

most of the 30 for 30s are pretty darned good i liked the one on bobby knight the one on catholics versus convicts and the one on the big east in particular take that to the bank brochachos

The Battered Bastards of Baseball was a pretty interesting doc I stumbled upon this weekend. It's about an independent baseball team in Portland when it was the only independent team in the country. Owned by Kurt Russell's dad Bing Russell. Check it out.

Really enjoyed Reggie.

Easily my favorite player on the Yankees growing up in NYC at the time. His fights with Billy Martin were epic. So outspoken but he delivered in the clutch almost every time in ‘77 & ’78.

Never forget when they traded him to the Angels - hated the move and instantly became an Angels fan. They brought in his replacement - Dave Winfield - who never won anything for the Yankees.

It's almost that time for my yearly rewatch of "Elway to Marino".

Every Christmas season I watch Christmas Vacation, Elf, Die Hard, and a Christmas Story as least once.
Every draft season I watch that and Draft Day (yes, I know it's not realistic, that's what Elway to Marino is for)

i think it was up on Netflix a while back, dropped off and came back recently.

also the 30 for 30 "Benji" - https://www.espn.com/espnplus/catalog/d83e5ef3-d3ce-4353-9a02-da652aa6b7f2/benji - was excellent.

What about the 30 for 30 on the "Real Twin Towers" Paul Mokeski and Randy Breuer. That's some good stuff there my friend.

Watched "Disgraced" on Showtime last night. This is the doc about the Baylor Basketball murder and coverup by their coach Dave Bliss. It's heartbreaking to say the least. One beloved player murdered for no understandable motive, a head coach who tried to throw the beloved player under the bus as a drug dealer so the NCAA wouldn't investigate improper payments Bliss made to the player and an assistant coach who exposed the cover-up by secretly recording Bliss, thereby throwing his career away as a college basketball coach in the process. Oh, and some good 'ol Texas justice in the trial for the murderer.

Bliss agrees to the interviews and begins by being repentant and admitting wrong doing, then does a 180 towards the end and AGAIN tarnishes the legacy of Patrick Dennehy (who was murdered) by saying he was a 'druggie'. I had hoped that Dave Bliss was forever a pariah and would never be allowed to coach young men ever again but nope - a super small religious college in Oklahoma was all to eager to hire him as their head coach in 2016. Sickening.

Most touching moment of the entire doc was Dennehy's step father who said that if he ever saw Dave Bliss in person - despite his age, his weakness and his non-violent nature - would knock the teeth out of Bliss the second he got the chance.

I had forgotten many of the details about this one - recommend if you're looking for a sports doc but be prepared for some outrage.

ETA: After the doc was released in 2017, Bliss resigned from Southwestern Christian.
ETA2: The doc briefly showed a Jeremy Schapp round table segment talking about this murder/coverup with Kelvin Sampson, Jim Boheim and Coach K. Sampson was the ONLY one to defend the assistant who exposed Dave Bliss. Coach K and Jim Bhomeim basically called the assistant a rat and would never want the guy working for them. Think about that. Dave Bliss wanted to fabricate a story to exonerate himself from paying players. An assistant coach secretly taped these conversations and did the right thing. Coach K and Jim Boheim condemned these actions. Wow.

Nolan (Ryan) is a recent one that I enjoyed quite a bit.
I thought that was really good as well. On a side note, I wonder if anyone else that follows baseball finds it interesting that a man at his age accomplished what he did was never overwhelmingly accused of steroid use.

Guessing that he never looked like a 'roid guy based on his build - just had some amazing kinetics in that right arm.

Either that, or maybe would-be accusers were concerned about being Robin Ventura'd.

If I could leave my children with a handful of deep truths and make sure they really understand them, one of them would be that nice, polite, civil and socially adept have little correlation with whether the person is fundamentally good or not.

Think about how truly scummy as a human being you have to be to criticize the assistant in this case.

I've seen a lot of the above mentioned ones - Loved Nolan and the one about the Danbury Thrashers. I'm adding Reggie and the School of Ricky to my watch list.

I'll add a non-major sport one. Icarus - it's a little older now, but it's about the doping of Russian Olympians. Fascinating stuff. Amazing what a government will do/allow to promote athletic prowess.

Forgot about that one. Great doc.

As a life time Syracuse Basketball/Football fan, I am not the least bit surprised by this. Boeheim has single handedly ruined my joy of watching college hoops for the past 20 years. Of course I was thrilled they won the title in 2003, but I have watched him behave like a monster to fans when the cameras aren't on, and to local media......and by and large in front of National Media as well. When I hear that he's going to make an appearance on the Dan Patrick show, I will sometimes tune in just to see how long it takes to turn it off because he tries to turn on the charm with DP and really just comes off as a really bad actor. I am so glad he will no longer be coaching the Orange any longer.

I need to get a one-month subscription to Showtime to watch this documentary. Sounds riveting.

It was very well done - not sure why it didn't get more attention but Baylor University has a lot of big money donors who want these types of scandals buried. I mean, it is a SUPER Christian school with a reputation to protect but between this murder and the rampant sexual assaults by their football program, it's not a place I would ever send my kids.

Boeheim is a slime ball. Sounds like you have the proper perspective on this guy.

I had an internship with the sports director at local Syracuse station in '86-87 of all seasons. The Sports Director at the station was a good guy by the name of Doug Logan, who also happened to be the radio "Voice of the Orange" for several years. We would do live reports on location at practices and see first hand how he treated people beneath him. He was an insufferable colossal turd.

If you are familiar with Syracuse Basketball and know the history of Assistant Coach Bernie Fine, and how Boeheim kept silent then, it's no surprise how he responded to the Baylor situation.

What's your take on the ESPN Syracuse host who was recently fired for speaking out negatively against the basketball program?

My son hosts an ACC podcast and appeared on their show a few times - was very upset by it.

Coach K - the supposed authority of moral high ground among coaches - felt the exact same way as Boeheim in that RT with Schaap.

Sidenote: I struggled to spell Boeheim and Shaap and wasn't even going to attempt Kriszewskeski :lmao:

I personally wasn't a fan of Brent Axe, but he got screwed and the firing was unjustified. I saw something on Twitter that Boeheim was somehow involved in with that firing also. The connection stated that Boeheim is a part owner of the radio station that employed the host, however I have no knowledge if any of that is true.

Coach K and Jim Boheim condemned these actions. Wow.

This does not surprise me at all given what Syracuse went through with their own investigation in recent years and Coach K's ties to Bobby Knight.

Just -- I have no respect for these guys. Thank God we have coaching to keep these guys away from attempts at political tyranny. That's sad to say, but it is that way.

A couple of old ones, not sure if you can still find them on HBO's on demand content.

Do You Believe In Miracles - 1980 US Men's hockey team. Probably my favorite documentary on it.

McEnroe/Borg: Fire and Ice - really enjoyed both the look back at what went on, and also seeing how the two of them have continued in life after

Some others from various sources:

Red Army - story of the growth of hockey in the USSR and then the Soviet hockey players getting the chance to play in the NFL finally. There's also an ESPN 30 for 30 that focus just on Slava Fetisov that I enjoyed though I haven't been able to score a copy, just saw it on air once.

The Russian Five - overlaps with the above though focuses more on the five Russian players who ended up on the Detroit Red Wings

The Dream Team - NBA TV's documentary

Lots of ESPN 30 for 30s are very good, won't try to go through them all.

The Russian Five was a favorite.

I’ve been watching the early episodes of Ken Burns “Baseball” documentary.
I have watched the entire series a few times but I have watched the first five episodes a dozen times or more. I‘m fascinated with the images and stories of the early game development by men like Alexander Cartright and the characters of the game like Cobb and Wagner and many others.
The images from the late 19th century of town parks, and fans dressed in suits at stadiums are for the lack of a better word, romantic.
I love the history of the game. With the exception of the bigotry and racism that held back all men from being able to play and compete in the same parks and leagues, the game itself is perfect.

A couple of favorite 30s I don't think have been mentioned are The Pony Express and Survive And Advance

It's been almost impossible for me to find again for a rewatch but the 30 for 30 on Todd Marinovich was one of the best ones I watched. Not sure where I can find it but it was outstanding.

The one about Marcus Dupree was also fantastic.

Lots of great 30 for 30s mentioned.

Another 30 for 30 that I really enjoyed was “Once Brothers”, about Drazen Petrovic and Vlade Divac, and divisions caused by the breakup of Yugoslavia.
