Sproles signs his tender (1 Viewer)

Chargers RB/KR Darren Sproles has signed his one-year contract tender worth $7,283,000. Sproles had been a restricted free agent tendered at the maximum first- and third-round tender, meaning that had the five-year veteran signed an offer sheet with another team, the Chargers would have had the right to match the offer or receive first- and third-round draft picks as compensation for losing him.
Not a bad chucnk of change. Most people are guessing that the Chargers go RB early and obviously that would diminish Sproles value. COuld they surprise us all and pass on an early round RB making Sproles that heavy part of a RBBC?

I know Sproles brings a lot to the team, but doesn't this seem like an awful lot to pay him? And two years in a row now. I bet they wish they would have worked out a new deal last year.

Yes, it's a lot of money and he's almost certainly gone next year.

Agreed. He really wasn't worth it last year IMO. His averages (ypc, ypr, kickoff and punt returns) all dropped off from 2008 to 2009, and despite a 50% increase in touches over 2008, he only scored 1 more TD in 2009.All that said, they really can't afford to let him go right now. They already have to replace their primary runner at RB, and that will be challenging enough... it would be even worse if they had to replace all downs/situations at RB, not to mention find a replacement kickoff & punt returner. One thing at a time... replace LT this year, replace Sproles next year...
