Stadium Graveyard (1 Viewer)

I have been to all of the ones that were still used from the 50's forward.

Most of us (even the geezers) weren't alive when some of those had their last games played

Pillars are an overrated flaw of stadiums.

I'll take the obstructed view for the cool look and covered seat.

LOVED the look of old commiskey park, so bummed I never go to see it. Ditto Detroit. That two tier upper deck where it really hangs over the field looks great.

:blackdot:

IN the Indians thread there is a link to League Park, some of it still stands.

I would have liked to gone to the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia the most I think, looked like a neat place. Same with Forbes Field, that place looked great.

Had no idea the Dodgers played in Jersey for a some time, those pictures are really striking.

Tiger Stadium was awesome, it really did have a ton of character. But that character included 20% of the seats having some obstruction as you could get a seat directly behind a pillar and not be able to see home plate. I remember my Grandpa too a bunch of pictures of the sections so that when he bought a ticket he'd know if he was gonna have to sit behind a pillar. I remember in the 70s he got a really bad seat for a big game late in the season and he #####ed about it for years after. When someone hit a HR to right the ball would hit the facade and bounce all the way back to the infield. I only saw a few homers hit to CF, it said 440 but it was actually 452 left of straight away center. Man the bleacher scene was crazy, lots of kids and lots of drunks and very few shirts or shoes. Beach ball, beer and profanity for $3 and it was worth every penny.

Cool link, I can't believe they played baseball in some of these places. I knew the polo grounds was huge, but that one pic looks like home plate is 600ft from CF.

eta: Just curious, were there ever any set rules or guidelines set forth by MLB regarding outfield configurations or did they just play wherever they could? I wonder in forty years if the next wave of retro stadiums will go back to the real old days and have 500ft centerfields!

Put it this way: Ty Cobb had 46 career inside-the-park HRs. Good luck breaking that record.

That is really neat. I looked it up and the Cleveland city council agreed to put a diamond at the site, too. What better way to honor a park than to put a diamond up at its remnants?Technically, the field at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis still exists, but it's being used as a multi-sport facility for the Boys and Girl's Club. It's located in a not-very-good part of STL, so not sure if I'd want to see a partial ballfield like League Park there.
