Staff vs Message Board - WCOFF Challenge (Tuesday at 9:00 PM Eastern) (1 Viewer)

Clayton Gray

Just call me Carlton
Staff member
We know some of you will be taking part in the WCOFF draft next weekend. To coincide with that event, we are going to have a staff/message board challenge to help facilitate discussion leading into the event.

Here is how we will run this: Using MFL, we will draft on Tuesday at 9:00 PM Eastern. Six staffers and six message board people will play. This will play out as a best ball format where everyone plays the other 13 teams each week. There will be no roster moves or trades. The draft will be expanded to twenty-two (22) rounds to provide the added flexibility.

There will be no writing owed by this competition per say, but we would like all the drafters to discuss their strategies on the message board after the draft.

We are most interested in these things:

Best approach to win this win this contest.
Players you targeted because of the WCOFF specific rules. How to enter

Just put your name and the reason you should be selected in this thread. Dodds will choose the MB team at 11:00 AM Pacific Friday. People selected will then get the full rules (same as WCOFF) and the link on MFL to draft.

A MB captain will also be chosen. This player and Dodds will draft the draft slots for their respective team as follows:

A die roll will determine who gets first selection.
If MB picks first, Dodds will get two picks (or vice versa).
MB will then get two picks, then Dodds, etc.
Each captain will then assign each member of their team a draft spot.Staff team will consist of Dodds, Bloom, Tremblay, Overton, Anderson, and Dowling.

Draft results will be posted 30 minutes after the completion of the draft for maximum discussion. Hopefully this will yield good ADP #'s for FBG participants.....

Judging

Scoring of the 12 teams will be 10 for 1st, 8 for 2nd, 6 for 3rd, 4 for 4th, 2 for 5th and 1 point for 6th. 31 points total are possible. It takes 16 points or more to win the contest. If the MB wins, we will give all participants a three-year subscription. When the MB chokes like they did last year, well you guys get nada.....

We will also give $100 to the staffer or MB that finishes in first place.

------------------------

How to enter: post in this thread just once and state your case.

I had so much to say about the other Staff vs MB event I would like to have a go at the staff. I also think the fact I compete in several dynasty leagues and redrafts against the staff will make me a good TEAM member to help out some of the others.

Short list of others I would like to see from the board

Bass n Brew, Banger, and Pimpin Aint Easy

I'll throw a hat in the ring as well. Always wanted to see how I match up against the 'pros.' I have been playing FF for over 10 years now, and I have played IDP, salary cap, standard, etc. Never played the WCOFF format, but it looks interesting and I'd love to give it a shot. :pickle:

I have played in the WCOFF main event 2x, and am in a WCOFF satellite this year.
I have discussed WCOFF strategy extensively here and on other boards.
I would be an ideal MB leader as I was part of a 24 person shared WCOFF team and can manage various personalities.
I understand the nuances in strategy change between WCOFF and a typical league.
I have a history of participating in MB vs Staff leagues and have demonstrated a level of commitment in what is asked of the MB participants.
I have an attention for detail. For example you have a typo in that it should say WCOFF specific rules not NFFC specific rules. :goodposting:
I believe my analysis would help many people in the Shark Pool understand the risks and rewards of various strategies and would better prepare them for any WCOFF draft they participated in the future. My ideal MB team would be myself, radballs, Fullback Fro, Tiger Fan, Joe T, and Gatorman.

I would like to take this opportunity to say how impressed I am with the Arkansas Razorbacks this year and think they are the cream of the crop in the SEC. If Joe is picking the people and not Clayton, please revise to say Tennessee Volunteers.

Thank you for your support.

Then surely you noticed that was corrected before your reply.

I'm new blood with fresh ideas for these kinds of challenges, but have been around the SP and the boards enough that people will give credibility to my ideas.
I have a different style of drafting than most people. I'm very boom/bust, and I'm not afraid to take chances on players, or even reach for those who fit my strategy.
I use my own projections, coupled with a risk/reward factor--but my main drafting strength is that I abuse the hell out of the custom dropoff feature of the DD. I personally feel it's the strongest tools you offer, but completely underutilized.
I'm not afraid of constructive criticism or the analysis/nitpicking that goes along with participating in a league like this. I like to debate individual players, strategies, etc...and take most inputs seriously instead of blowing them off or getting upset that I'm being challenged.
If I lost to Dowling, I just might commit seppuku. That would be worth the price of admission alone.

I would throw my hat in the ring as well as a MB captain, but I believe Bagger beat me to it, and I agree with him. Rad, Fro, Tiger, and Bagger should definitely be in this if you want to get the cream of the crop here. I am not too shabby, and JoeT has drafted in WCOFF as well. While I do not have as many cashes as rad, I have been runner up in my league1 year, and third place the other (I have monied 2/4 years I have played). I also missed out on a League championship 2 years ago (where I came in third in my league) by a total of 8 points over 11 weeks.

I have broken bread at WCOFF with all the notable FBG, and even with some who are no longer with us (Maxwell and the Shick!). I rescued Clayton Gray from himself at a few places I'd rather not name, and I have always written something for FBG every year (why stop now).

Thank you, and Pick me or Bagger.

Isn't that the game where you put all the numbers in to boxes and hope they add up to something?

I'm down to help.

Like many others mentioned by bagger and Gatorman I am a WCOFF tested fantasy player. I joined the first year and finished runnerup our first year. I have played every year since so I am intimantly familiar with the scoring system and roster system to help make this draft successfull.

I am also very experienced in the best ball format competeing and winning several messageboard survivor leagues. I've invented my own concepts in survivor style leagues coming up with the White Elephant which you can steal drafted players.

I think I could do well. Other reccomendations would be Radballs, Gatorman, Bagger, and Tigerfan. We have all been to Vegas multiple times. Know the WCOFF format inside and out. If you are looking to get the best content on the site, Im my honest opinion, you selections should be several of these WCOFF experts.

:bag: in 07

This will be my 3rd year competing in WCOFF (plus one satellite), and I have pretty much devoted my entire FF analysis towards WCOFF specific rules. Even though I am not nearly as active in the Shark Pool as I once was (gb ole yeller) I have had multiple at length discussions with fellow board members and staff members (specifically Rudnicki and Gray) on WCOFF related strategies and theories…..and have no doubt that they would vouch for me in my extensive WCOFF knowledge.

The rules of WCOFF differ from most normal FF leagues and even other high stakes leagues, and this is where my expertise will be valued. I will be able to explain each pick in detail that would help educate those FF players even if they were not familier to the WCOFF format.

Not really concerned with being the captain, as either bagger or gator would be a solid choice. The synergistic power harnessed by myself, radballs, gator, bagger, fro and joet would be a superfriendsesque…not to mention would likely make for some entertaining reading.

P.S. It's all luck

I'd like to take a shot at it.

Although I've never played in the WCOFF itself, I've played in leagues using the same rules before. Similarly I doubt I can match the amount of playing time some others will list in the thread. I did put in work to make a run at the Survivor leagues and Anarchy league though and would do the same for this if chosen.

Or worst-case I harass my 'teammates' until they tell me what to do, since obviously some are just always right. :kicksrock: :lmao:

Here we go again. I have tried to get into almost everyone of these staff vs. MB events and have been shut out of everyone of them. I have been running a fantasy football league for the past 20 years. I am one of the rare people in this hobby that did all the scoring every week by hand. If that is not dedication, I don't know what is. I have been a paying member of Football Guys since the beginning. I play in 6 leagues currently and have won championships in everyone of them and have made the playoffs every year.

I am not your typical drafter. I roll the dice quite often and it pays off quite a bit. It would be truly an honor and privildege to participate in this challenge and knock heads with not only the staff but other respected members of this board like Gator, Bagger, MOP, and Fullback. We have all been part of great debates over topics in the past and it would be great to finally match wits with some of the best players in this game.

Give me a chance David! You will not be disappointed!

I am a footballguys.com subscriber and enjoy following the NFL year round in the Shark Pool threads because things change quickly. I have participated in multiple 16-team FBG message board drafts, including all of the Winter and Pre-Draft Survivors and four consecutive years in the SSLs, and MBSLs. I am a charter member of the Reunion League, a Head-to-Head league that spun off of the original SSL 4 draft. I have also participated in Anarchy's League 2 for the past two years.

I enjoy the challenges presented in large leagues drafting against top flight competition. Following the Winter League Draft this year, I evaluated all sixteen teams utilizing a position weight factor to enable a mathematical team evaluation. See post 102 of the linked thread for a recommendation from BassNBrew.

I have been a significant contributor for the past two years in Jason Wood's Player Spotlight threads and articles for the previous two seasons and have also contributed a few free-lance articles to footballguys.com, including this year.

Thanks for your consideration and the opportunity to participate!

I almost feel guilty asking to break into the sausagefest going on above with Bagger/Fro/Joe T/Tiger Fan, etc., but here goes.

- 5 year veteran of WCOFF. Make it 6 counting this year.

- 5th overall finish in year 2. I don't believe any of the other candidates so far can claim a higher finish.

- 1 league championship and 1 3rd place finish.

- 2 years ago, Fro and I battled in the same league. We finished with darn near identical points and record, but he topped me by a few points, I believe. I finished about 35th overall that year in regular season scoring. However, I won the signed Dan Marino helmet at the draft, suckers (See the picture of proof in my profile), which sits proudly in my home office.

I think I'd rather sit back and laugh at the MB people who boast how awesome they are, are flummoxed by the MFL league draft interface, and draft teams like their cheatsheets were imported from a Hong Kong sweatshop.

I'd love to have the chance to jump in and kick some staff butt, and I really appreciate the support from a lot of you. But, I've already got another draft against some staff members at the same time as I go for my 3rd consecutive league title. I tried multitabling it last year and it's very difficult so I'm going to bow out of any kind of consideration.

Good luck to the MB team and I look forward to seeing many of you in Vegas for the WCOFF next weekend.

Got no beef with legacy or Buck. Both are solid as can be. However, legacy cannot wear his jersey for this draft.

(If all of the guys picked are at WCOFF, the Captain of the league should be buying (or at least paying all the tips) at a sportsbook in Vegas)

Say it ain't so, Rad! Anyhow, we'll meet up at the ventian sportsbook for the thursday night game. I will be wearing my joust shirt, Jorts, Crocs, and my I hate Bostonfred Hat. (speaking of which, Reaper may also be a name for this group, as he was BF's partner last year)

I'd be interested in giving it a shot. Seems like there are quite a few MB veterans lining up to play again. At some point doesn't including repeat entrants basically turn it into "pro vs. pro"? I think some new blood is in order. If nothing else, my team will serve as comic relief! Thanks for your consideration.

Here is the MB Team:

Bagger (Team Captain)

Fullback Fro

Tiger Fan

rzrback77

Team Legacy

Bagger, Please PM your email address and I will do the irony dice rolls. We can then select draft slots based on that outcome.

Guess I waited a copule mins too late, since Dodds posted the team between my start and finish to post my interest. Good luck to the team, and I'm happy to help you guys any way I can. Not a vet of the actual WCOFF, but have played in several leagues with WCOFF rules, plus I've matched against several of these before.

WoooWooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

This looks like the contest where the staff is likely outmatched. There is a lot of high stakes experience on the messageboard team. I'm not positive of the following years experience numbers but I'm fairly certain I remember which staff members from FBG's are at the big dance every year and I'm fairly certain of the experience numbers. But please correct me if I'm wrong.

Staff

Dodds - 1 year wcoff exp

Bloom - zero years of wcoff exp

Tremblay - zero years of wcoff exp

Overton - zero years of wcoff exp

Anderson - zero years of wcoff exp

Dowling -zero years of wcoff exp

Total - 1 yr of wcoff experience

--------------------------------------------------------

Here is the MB Team:

Bagger - 2 yrs wcoff exp

Fullback Fro - 5 yrs wcoff exp

Tiger Fan - 2 yrs wcoff exp

rzrback77 - zero yers of wcoff exp?

Team Legacy - 5 yrs of wcoff exp

buck naked - 5 yrs of wcoff exp

Total - 19 yrs of wcoff experience

Clearly the advantage goes to the message board team

Still waiting on the irony dice roll from Dodds. We'll draft our slots from there and the MB Team will be notified shortly.

As a survivor of the infamous QB Squeeze of ought four, we will be ready for any and all tricks from the staff.

I got robbed...

(This is not a bad thing, b/c I was still trying to figure how I was going to explain to my wife that I have a 5 hour mock draft the night before I left for vegas anyway)...

GL

I might also point out that Dodds did a smart thing not picking any of the FBG staff with WCOFF experience. I know how they finished (Chase, Rudnicki, Gray, I am looking at you)

I just did the irony dice roll. Staff rolled a 256 and MB rolled an 897.

Staff will select pick 1.

MB has the next two selections.

I sent it to the email that Fro gave me for you. You guys lost the dice roll (1st of many defeats...lol).

This is an excellent point. I have some serious wife-time to give this weekend on Sunday & Monday, because tomorrow is NFFC, then this draft is Tuesday night, local league draft Wednesday night, leave on Thursday for Vegas for 5 days. :wall:

That's a good lineup.Everyone should enjoy the results of this draft.I'm most interested in the strategy of this one.

and we get 12:

Staff: 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, 12

MB: 2, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11

Looking forward to this.

Bagger,

Send me an email on what position your people will draft from (and email addresses for them). We will set up the league this weekend (probably tomorrow) and send everyone a link. We also will determine our draft spots.

See everyone Tuesday.
