Yeah. People are allowed to have whatever opinions they want of course, but there are a couple turds in here bringing down the vibe. Its a ####### Star Wars movie and it was really fun, 100x better than the prequels. I'd rather have a group high five session in here than read a few dorks who are mad that they repeated some story elements from the original trilogy. Who cares.

kinda like that the same guy is writing both 8 and 9...those two movies need to have a very cohesive feel to properly end the trilogy that Abrams set off with a bang, so it will be good to have one voice working on both. These things probably have so many hands involved that it might not matter, though.

The story has always been that Ford begged Lucas to kill him in Jedi but Lucas was too worried about merchandise sales.
You had a good run, Han.
I assume he only accepted this role with the specific request that his character finally be killed.

We discusses this a bit last night before the movies started. This movie has been hyped in epic fashion, but it wasn't really needed. I would say easily 90% of people seeing it would have gone to see it if the only promotion had been an announcment that it was coming out.
I was out with my wife tonight in a department store and everything was Star Wars, I mean everything.

I honestly don't know what people who didn't like this were expecting. They had one main task for this movie: make something that will reel back in the SW fans of old after being jaded by the prequels while making something for the next wave to latch on to. I think they did that wonderfully for the most part. I went with my 9 year old son who is probably more into Star Wars than I am. We both love the movies, but if I am honest I just watch the prequels to humor him because he loves them and he watches the originals to humor me because he knows I love them. This movie both of us enjoyed equally. Nice blend of new characters and new humor while still keeping the feel of the originals for the old farts. He is going to watch it with mom on Sunday, so I am interested in what she thinks.
Random thoughts on my likes:
- Really thought the action was well done. Looked a good as I hoped from the trailers. Just that alone would have instantly vaulted them over the prequels, but on top of that...
- The acting was damn good for this series of movies. Like somebody stated before we got to see......EMOTION. Rey and Kylo were standouts and really also liked Oscar Issac.
- I know it seems to be 50/50 in here, but I really liked Kylo Ren. Thought he had some good menace to him and is easily one of the better baddies that we have had in the series. The point was to show him as even more of a hot headed version of Vader, and it seems like he is starting at a point with more powers than we saw Vader have in IV, and as we learned he going back to complete his training. Sure he got beat by Rey, but I didn't have a huge problem with it (as I will explain next). I would have been more annoyed if they went the route of the prequels and given us a one-off bad guy for each movie. That was one of their many downfalls.
- Rey was great. Has to be a Skywalker somehow. Would make sense if she was the offspring of Luke and someone else powerful with the force (would need to address that next episode) OR is Kylo's sister. Maybe she was being trained at a young age with Luke and the others, Kylo went on a killing spree, and Luke is the one who dumped her on the desert planet (maybe telling Han and Leia Kylo killed her or something?) again, we will get her story in Ep. 8.
My minor quibbles (and they are minor):
- I will agree they went a tad too far with the nods to ANH. Desert planet, DeathStar 3, droid hiding the plans, all the old characters, bar scene, etc, etc..
- Like above with a couple too many times to the humor well. Few too many snarky comments, and did I really hear a "droid, please" out of Finn?
- Thought Leia was rough, and didn't have much screen presence. Made me wish Kylo Ren killed the other parent.
Overall, I like I stated before, I don't know how a Star Wars fan couldn't like this as is was far and away better than 1-3 that most of us seem to hate. Much better acting and action. The fact that it was too much like A New Hope really kept you from having a blast during the movie. Hell, didn't Return of the Jedi hit damn near every beat that A New Hope did? We aren't reinventing the wheel here.

Sure, it could be interesting to see Luke deal with Kylo, like he did with his grandfather.
What I wonder is who was the mother?
Ren got hit with a bowcaster, injured in a saber fight and got drunk on the power of destruction, evil and hatred. His stopping that shot mid-flight, and his ability to actually read minds were proof enough he was strong in the force since we've never really seen either done before.

Exactly, and not fully trained. I know that Vader was the big bad from a lot of our youths, but what exactly did he do in 4-6 so show his powers? I thought Kylo Ren stopping the laser blast in the first scene was pretty cool.

Ben Skywalker was the son of Luke and Mara Jade, but obviously JJ is moving some of the pieces around, making Ben Han's kid.
I was hoping for a brief mention of missing twins from Han and Leia but they look to not be using that from the EU.

I think they're making a point not to use anything at all, or they'd at least be pulling names from it.

Stopping the laser blast and holding it was great! Something we've never seen in Star Wars before and I thought it was really well done. That was a great scene.

He also put Rey to sleep at some point which we haven't seen, have we? And a couple of times he just put people in stasis--they were completely frozen unable to move.

Not for some. For a lot of people this one sparked that magic back to life. Nothing quite like that feeling in the theater.

I guess we all have different tastes. Maybe the first 3 were special due to the time they were released, maybe Im old, maybe I have too high of expectations of trying to reach some childhood when I was 10 years old in the 80s, maybe I have a buzz, maybe its because my big screen hero isnt 35 years old anymore.
It didnt have the emotion.

I disagree. I think the books, at least in a very small part, are being shown on screen.
Han and Leia's youngest kid in the books was turned to the dark side.
And as I said, Ben was a name used in the books for one of the children. It was Luke's son, but JJ just shifted the name to be Han's kid.

The funny thing is, I read through a lot of posts here (have not seen the movie yet) and still have absolutely no idea about anything in the movie 
Sounds like it will be entertaining. I got a few free hours tomorrow mid-day, might go see it by myself.

Until something more specific is "copied" from the books I'm going to chalk it up to coincidence since those are just reasonable things you could see coming: a child of a main character turning to the dark side, not a super original idea. Naming a kid after Obiwan, not a super original idea. I think there's a good chance you're just seeing what you want to see here, those are obvious potential plot points or details that just happen to have been used in both the books and movies.
And I thought the youngest Solo kid in the books was Anakin, who died young because Lucas didn't want a book Anakin and a movie Anakin around at the same time. Thought it was one of the twins that eventually went dark, but I'm fuzzy on the facts here. I was pretty young when I read these and I don't think I ever finished the Vong storyline where a lot of this comes from...when I was younger I had read all the Zahn books, the Rogue Squadron books, and stuff like that but stopped sometime after Mara Jade died but before that Vong arc ended. I don't remember, it was a long time ago.

There are tons of things that would easily convince me that Abrams and Disney are considering anything from the EU as potential source material. Those two things you named just aren't among them because they're pretty obvious continuations of the story where the movies left off. If he starts coming out with secret force-sensitive operatives that Palpatine had popping up or has a character named after a book character or anything like that, I'll buy it easily. But it seems obvious to me that he isn't even tempted to peruse the EU for ideas because they've already struck it from the record and told fans to ignore it, and he wants to make it his own and not admit he needs ideas from books a very small percentage of fans ever read.
I actually wouldn't be at all surprised if he has purposely NOT done certain things he might have thought of specifically because a Google search or intern search revealed that it had been done in the EU already. But that's just me throwing stuff to see if it sticks.

Sure, you can ignore anything you want and believe anything you want. You can make the narrative be what ever you want that way.
I never read the books myself and have no care whether they are followed or not but my daughter has read some of them and multiple times during the movie she elbowed me saying "from the books".

Great that it was based on action and less politics but at times I felt lost.
They didn't really flesh out Finn too much.
Captain Phasma was a waste. Oh goody she's a chick. She's just as incompetent as the rest of them. Really if the choice is maybe they blow my head off or yes destroy this planet I'm on, I'll take my chances the good guys won't kill me.
Kylo ren had potential but even with injury, no way Finn should have ever gotten a hit on him. And Rey never trained in her life. She wins?
Then there was center point/starkiller/death star redux. It's very JJ if Into Darkness is any example.
But nitpicking aside because we could do that to all of them, this was the best film in a long time. I put it 4th right now. Maybe in subsequent viewings that will change but it was a fun Star wars movie and we haven't had that in awhile.

People had some interesting speculation earlier in the thread that she was trained by Luke and then had her mind wiped and stashed on a out of the way planet, after Luke lost Ben to the dark side.
I don't know if it is true but it would match some of the "awakening" she had which fits in the title.

Interesting. Its been a long time for me and I was a kid, but I didn't spot a single thing that I recognized from what I remembered of the books. Which is why I said I wouldn't be surprised if it was purposeful, because if they wanted to there's tons of innocent things they could have pulled, like names and places etc. that wouldn't bother anyone but would reward the hardcore fans. Again, outside of the ordinary obvious stuff that didn't have to come from the books--Leia and Han get married, someone honors Ben by naming a kid after him, someone's kid goes dark side, etc. But its very possible my memory just sucks and they have pulled things from the EU.

Dude they ripped Kylo and Rey right from the books. Their personalities and appearances are Jacen and Jaina Solo even if Rey ends up not being a Solo. The new death Star more closely resembles center point station in that it harnesses solar energy and can focus a beam across light years to destroy a target. Hell they even called it star killer which was another doomsday weapon from the EU. Luke training Jacen/Kylo and failing ala Obiwan is also an EU storyline.
Sorry but JJ picked what he liked and changed the names and details to fit his story.

Totally enjoyed it, rehash or no. Plot moved right along, action was great, looked great, characters were interesting and relatable, and I enjoyed all the nods back, however heavy handed. I have a feeling moving forward that they'll leave most of it behind.
I'm sure when the euphoria wears off ill see more of the warts or be more bothered by the rehash, but during and now immediately afterwards I couldn't be happier about the movie.
Loved when kylo tells rey she looks like a Mexican teenager.

That would make some sense but they showed her as a little kid. Training is kind of physical and she grew a lot since then. Would take some time to get caught up on the motions with her older body.
