Start-Up Dynasty Draft what are the best draft slots? (1 Viewer)

Doing my first Dynasty league this year and the lottery for draft slot is tonight. Based on that lottery people will be able to pick where they draft from. Where do most feel the best place to draft from is this year in dynasty (this is the initial draft not the rookie draft)? 12 team 0.5 PPR, start 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 Flex.

If it's in anyway possible, convince your Leaguemates to do an auction for initial player dispersal. It's been well documented here that an initial auction is more fair, allows folks to better put their signature on their team, creates a more challenging and competitive League, and yeilds more overall enjoyable dynasty league in the long run.

A quick search will give you all the ammo you need to convince your Leaguemates to switch, but I completely get that you may not have enough time between now and tonight...but if you can present your argument well enough, it's worth trying. You won't be sorry.

Good Luck!

Six of one, half dozen of the other.

Personally, I prefer to draft in the middle, so I can get the BPA instead of hoping he will fall to me if I have an end slot. Nothing worse IMO than being at 3.12 and seeing a player at 3.06 (who shouldn't be there) and not be able to move up.

Recently I traded the 1.11 starting spot for the 1.08 (including all choices) so if you want to move either way up or down, you probably won't have much problem finding a trade partner

Here are my options: 1.1, 1.2, 1.8-1.12. First 5 guys picked 1.3-1.7. One guy left to pick before me. Thoughts?

If you're starting 2-3 RBs and only 3-4 WRs, take a pick in the top 2.

Other formats, I'd probably take a later pick and go with stud WRs.

A top 2 pick will likely get you more competitive this year.

Later picks might be better for the long-term.

I'm getting ready to do a startup auction where we are auctioning off where we pick in the rookie draft (16 tm league). In this years rookie draft I am more than willing to be picking late, like in the 12 - 16 spots. Very deep class. I'm not gonna over pay for one of those top 5 picks (which I assume most owners will). I'll take what ever is left at a bargain price and gladly reel in solid players for super cheap.

But in a vet draft, I'd feel comfortable drafting in the middle somewhere...maybe 6 - 10. Key is, don't overpay, just make smart draft choices. Study the scoring rules in your league and load up on players that score more...use them as trade bait later if you miss out on other positions.

Assuming a traditional snake draft I still like to slot myself as early as possible. My reasoning is that it always feels to me that the talent really drops off in round 3 and I like to get that early 3rd round pick.

I'm currently the 3rd overall in my league and I'm trying to trade back to the 6-9 spot. I see 6 stud WR's, 2 stud RB's and 1 stud TE that I'd be happy coming out of the 1st round with. So I'm trying to get near the end of that range so I have an earlier pick in the 2nd.

I ended up taking 8th slot. Here's how the draft has gone so far for anyone that is interested:

1.1 AJ Green

1.2 Julio Jones

1.3 Josh Gordon

1.4 McCoy

1.5 Dez Bryant

1.6 Charles

1.7 Lacy

1.8 Calvin

1.9 Demarius Thomas

1.10 Jimmy Graham

1.11 Alshon Jeffery

1.12 Le'Veon Bell

Amazing. We did a start up last year and I picked #10 out of 10 and I ended up with the top 3 players in your startup.

Wow I bet you were pleasantly surprised to see Calvin there at the 8 spot.

Round 2.

2.1 Cordarelle Pattedon

2.2 Bernard

2.3 Cobb

2.4 Martin

2.5 Peterson (I seriously considered moving down here..might really regret this pick)

2.6 Zac Stacy

2.7 Rookie Pick 1.1

2.8 Keenan Allen

2.9 Forte

2.10 Antonio Brown

2.11 Michael Floyd

2.12 Montee Ball

Guess I'm being a bit cautiously pessimistic here. Obviously ADP is incredible and should be solid for 2-3 more years but is that production more valuable than what Stacy, Ball, Allen, Etc would give me over the long hall? This is my first dynasty league so I honestly don't know what the best route to take is. Seems to me like a lot of people are going really young. 12 of the first 25 picks are 1st or 2nd year players which is pretty incredible. Goes to show you how quickly things change.

Hey this is our league haha. I'm the guy that gambled with Julio, tried to move down but no one offered anything. Just traded up to snag Allen who was falling.

Sure is! Yeah I likes that move for you. Allen's a stud. Julio is amazing too, it was a fine pick. What did you think about that 1.1 rookie pick? I didn't see that one coming that soon!

Do you mind sending a link so we can follow the draft? Thanks.

can you guys pick incoming rookies?

Some of the second round picks seem sketchy to me. Not a big fan of selecting Allen and Ball in the 2nd round.

Bell went 12, wow.

Yeah Calvin at 8 is nice. AP you might have overdrafted just a tiny bit, but your team just started with a pretty likely top 2-3 WR for several more years and a top 5 RB for 2-3 more years.

Very little risk with those two fellas.

 at "cautiously pessimistic". Love that phrase.

Look at it this way: Since coming into the league AP has averaged 107 VBD per year. If he gives you even two more years of his average production before falling off the map completely, you'll still have earned 214 VBD out of that draft slot. Stacy, Allen, and Ball delivered 60 VBD last year, combined. What are the odds that one of them delivers 215+ VBD over the rest of his career by himself?

I could write another 5,000 words on why I think youth is vastly overrated in dynasty startup drafts ... but suffice it to say that if I walked out of one right now with Calvin and ADP in the first two rounds I'd be :hifive: myself.

I think the key is to pick your strategy fairly early on and stick to it. The majority of owners will reach early for the young guys that are already doing something which isn't a bad strategy but if you begin drafting in that more immediate 2-3 year window early on you can build a very strong team early. I think I would continue down that win now path with ADP on your roster and build a strong starting lineup for the next 2-3 years. Once you have starters you can then mix in some prospects along with talented players that are sliding due to their age. I am actually a fan of drafting for the first 2-3 years due to the value you get and then spending my last hand full of picks on prospects for the future. I think that presents the best value. The biggest mistake I feel is not picking a particular strategy and going back and forth throughout the draft.

Thanks for the advice. Rolled with Lynch at 3.8. Win now mode.
