A good defense will take away the deep threat and probably stop the run. This good defense will force the QB to dump the ball off in short passes to RB's, TE's, and short route running WR's.

I think this is why a guy like Wes Welker could have a good game against a tough San Diego defense.

I'm on board with this thought but I'm thinking you will have to provide hard proof of this through example. After Colston and Fitzgerald bombed for me last week (which is irrelevant), I'm open to outside the box thinking in this scenario.
