Starting a Keeper League (1 Viewer)

I've been in a standard 12 team re-draft league with the same guys for over 8 years. We have been using how you finish in the previous year, to determine your daft slot for the upcoming season (reverse order). Meaning if you finished last (12th) in 2008, you would get the first choice of where you wanted to draft in 2009 (1 through 12).

This year we were thinking of making this a keeper league, being able to keep 1 or 2 players off our 2009 roster at the end of the season. Some people are arguing that since we are starting a keeper league this year, the draft order going into the season should be randomized. Those who did poorly in 2008 (and were slated to get picks 1-4 this season) argue that they should keep their draft spots because that was the rule prior to everybody deciding to switch to a keeper league. The others in the league, whom will obviously miss out on players like ADP, Turner, and MJD are lobbying for randomizing the draft order.

The only fair way to do this in my opinion is to come up with a hybrid of both. To somehow factor in last season's performance with a semi-randomized selection process... very similar to the NBA draft lottery (where the lottery is still random, but last season's worst performing team has a higher probability of getting the first pick).

What are your guy's thoughts on this? Has anybody heard of any weighted draft simulation software out there? Thanks in advance.

We made the same switch this year. Before each season we vote on potential rule changes to put in place for the following season so prior to the 2008 season beginning, we voted to move the redraft league to a keeper league in 2009 and the worst to first would continue as before. So by planning now for the next season instead of planning for the current season, it was an even playing field for 2008 and when drafting for the 2008 draft, all owners knew that anyone on their squad could be kept. It was quite surprising to see ADP not taken first. The 2009 draft is the first draft that players have been kept in. I recommend moving to the keeper league next year.

We moved to a 2 keeper league a few seasons ago from a re-draft league and some of the owners were concerned how it would impact the draft. The argument was the top players would not be available from year-to-year, thus diluting the draft. The compromise the first couple years mandated no player drafted in rounds 1-5 could be kept for the following season and players kept carried a value of 4 rounds prior the next season. (For example, if you elected to keep your sixth round choice from the 2008 draft, he would cost you your second round pick in 2009).This kept the top players in the draft from season to season but allowed forward thinking owners the chance to jump on a keeper earlier that he would likely be drafted in a re-draft format. We have since went to one person drafted in rounds 1-5 could be kept for the following season only as the owner's first round pick. Surprisingly, only a handful of people kept players from last season. To sum up, if you're set on going to a keeper league this year, consider limiting the rounds players can be kept in, even if it's just the first couple rounds. This allows the owners picking early the same opportunity to get the top players and the owners picking later to know said players won't be unavailable indefinitely.

We made ours that you could "franchise tag" any one player drafted 2nd round or beyond. We do a live lottery to determine who drafts what position.

I use a weighted lottery with a bingo tumbler. 10 team league so worst team gets 10 balls, 2nd worst 9 balls... best team one ball. Lots of fun!

Here are my league's keeper rules...I REALLY enjoy this league. A lot of different strategies can be used. (FYI...we also have a superflex position which can be a QB). These rules give you some interesting choices with whether you keep two really good players, a bunch of average ones, if you draft some good late round picks they are a bargain the next year...kind of a keeper/dynasty hybrid. Good times.

Keeper rules

a. You can keep as many players you want on your team as long as you don’t exceed the 34 points total allowed.

b. Team rosters and keeper data will be emailed out sometime in June.

c. Points are assigned to players as follows:

Round player was drafted-- Points it costs you

1-- 16

2-- 15

3-- 14

4-- 13

5-- 12

6-- 11

7-- 10

8-- 9

9-- 8

10-- 7

11-- 6

12-- 5

13-- 4

14-- 3

15-- 2

16-- 1

17-- 1

18-- 1

Keeper from last year Last year’s points + 5pts.

d. Each year you keep a player again, 5 points will be added to his total.

e. Waiver wire pick-ups can be kept for a cost of 5 points.

f. Trades can be kept for the same cost that it would have cost the previous owner.

Why not just turn the page?

You're changing the way your League 'does business', which is a pretty significant event. Close this Chapter of your League, titled 'ReDraft', and Move on to Chapter 2, titled 'Keeper' and start from scratch. It's the 1st Year of your new League - why should anything from your ReDraft History have anything to do with your 'new League' moving forward? All the Teams go into the Hopper, and you draw for Draft Slots, just like if you were starting a brand new League, and move on from there...
