Starting Up a Dynasty League (1 Viewer)

Shark Pool Peeps -

I have run a redraft league for 12 years, and I think I have taken it as far as i can take it. I would like to face a new challenge. Since I began frequenting the pool, I have read a lot about the concept of the Dynasty League. It sounds like an awesome concept to me, and a great step up from the redraft format.

I am a subscriber to FBG, and I tried unsuccessfully to find any articles that have been written about starting up a Dynasty League. If one exists, or if anyone out there has a good guide that they can share that outlines the basic rules and policies of a Dynasty League, I would greatly appreciate it.

TIA

I'm thinking of pitching a dynasty league switch (or perhaps a keeper) to my current redraft league for next year. Any suggestions for starting up a dynasty league would be helpful. I'm hoping for a basic setup, at least for starters, just to get everybody on board. There are 2-3 guys that aren't as active as the rest of the bunch, so I'm not looking for anything too complex.

I don't know if there are any articles, but am too lazy to check.I'd tell you these few things to keep in mind though:Do you homework on the owners! The death knell for a dynasty league is high turnover. People would rather have a static ownership situation. Make sure you are bringing in people that are in it for the long haul and won't drop out if the going gets rough.Make owner pay next year's fees for trading future draft picks. Unscrupulous owners may try to mortgage future picks for a veteran player they need as a last piece, only to quit after they cash their winnings check and you are left with an old team and a heck of a time trying to find a new owner.Make it easy to rebuild. People don't think it's very fun to suck year in and year out. If someone has a bad initial draft, they are in trouble for years under a punitive talent re/allocation system. If it is too punitive, it could lead to people quitting.Have an idea of what sort of league you want before you write the rules - do you want a league that rewards active owners? Maybe a shallow roster league is best. If you want one that doens't necessarily want that - expand your roster.Good luck

Find a post by Pasquino and check his sig. Lots of good dynasty info there, including a link to the Dynasty "Master" thread. :lmao:

I'll say this.... When I started my first, it was hard to find anything specific. Much like other league styles, its up to personal preference. Roster size, etc. are going to vary greatly between leagues. Basically, I formed a 3-person commission-ship, so that details could get better debate. Another thing that I found was very useful in dynasty vs redraft was using IDP. Team defenses are just too fickle ( Bears, Ravens 2006 vs 2007 ) to keep over long terms.

You have any examples of things that can be done to help with this?

Well... you could force owners to drop a certain number of players every year prior to the draft. Those players enter the talent pool along with rookies, or you could have a separate FA draft apart from the rookie draft. A separate FA draft from rookie draft helps the bad teams acquire more players than a single combined draft. Obviously the most players the owners are forced to drop, the easier it is to rebuild.

Even though I've never done Dynasty, I was thinking of basically extending are redraft roster size (currently 12) to maybe 18 to account for the rookies that would be drafted and the stashing of backups with futures (like Turner, Norwood, etc).

For drafting I was thinking of five rounds where we draft worst to first each round (saw this in another post).

Trading - currently our redraft closes trading at mid-Nov to prevent tanking teams trading away good players, but I'm not sure how we'd do it in dynasty. Maybe close trading from mid-Nov until after the NFL draft concludes.

My biggest concern is that I think there are a couple of guys that will lose interest if their team is subpar for more than two years, thats why I'd do drafting worst to first. The problem I see is that drafting first in the rookie draft probably won't immediately help a team much right away. I might try starting them on a 2-3 keeper league to test the waters.

I know all of the above sounds simplified, but thats how I want it. I see some posts were dynasty leagues use contracts, auctions, 15+ page constitutions, etc but I don't think that will work with the group I play with.

Yeah, a repeating WtF draft is essential for a dynasty IMO.

Chuck - do this - Go to MFL site and search for leagues. Just type in "dynasty" and you'll get an overwhelming number of leagues. Choose about 10 or so and look up their posted league bylaws. Those sets of rules will give you an idea of dynasty leagues are run

There are really a lot of things to consider to create a successful dynasty league. I think the most important of these is finding dedicated interested owners. The owners need to fit your "style." Some guys love the trash talk, some like a league with a lot of trading and activity, and some may prefer just a simple set your lineup and not much else type league. Whatever you like, find owners that will mesh with your personality.

The next thing to consider is writing a very good set of rules. I know GregR had the very helpful rules thread that you should look up. I also have a lengthy set of rules for the HyperActive leagues that you are welcome to check out.

I like the idea of looking at other leagues for rules and general setup ideas. Think about th leagues that are sometimes mentioned around here and look at their websites (MOX, HyperActive, etc).

Choosing a league hosting site is another crucial detail. I prefer MFL, others like RTSports, Yahoo, ESPN, etc.

Good luck!
