State Foods (1 Viewer)

My favorite dish that I've only seen in Michigan? Perch. Had a crispy perch sandwich before playing 18 at Arcadia and it was one of the best fish sandwiches I've ever had.
I grew up in NE Ohio and it was a pretty regular thing for the Friday night all you can eat fish fry's were perch. Now that you mention it, there really hasn't been anywhere else in my travels that had it. The Great Lakes have a cool influence on the fish game around those states. Walleye is a solid meal in any of the surrounding states.

No, growing up in Texas, perch was a junk fish that you just tossed out. So when I started visiting Michigan, I was a little flummoxed when my FIL took me out to Lake St. Claire to catch 'em. They're delicious, walleye too. Fresh caught walleye/perch with a little egg wash, flour and a flash fry is terrific eating.

Catching’ walleye off the dock, watch the waves roll off the rocks . . .

If northern Ohio had a regional meal it'd be Lake Erie fish paired with made-from-scratch Pierogies. If in late summer/early fall add fresh mexican street corn dip as an app.

i feel like all of these lists just have to say cheese something for wisco but i would say friday night fish fries are really the biggest thing up here take that to the bank brochachos
or a bratwurst
i would say that the big three are fish fry brats and cheese i cant think of anything else that really rises to that level maybe the old fashioned if you want to get bigger than just food take that to the bank brochachos

Lived in Kansas almost my whole life and have never heard of us being the loose-meat sandwhich state.

Probably makes sense for this state that really has no identity.
Loose meat sandwich sounds like an insult someone in Missouri would call a Kansan.

I follow regional food a little and I'd never heard of that one.
I've never crossed paths with a loose meat sandwich in the wild, but I recall these were a staple on the menu of the diner on the Roseanne TV show.

Grew up in Michigan, would not have guessed wet burrito.
Fried chicken is too generic, but Zehnders does it best.
Cherry pie for sure would be on the short list. As would Apple cider and cinnamon donuts.

But the winner for Michigan should have been the Pączki.

I’ve seen Wet Burritos on menus but had no idea it was a Michigan thing.

Coney dogs
Pasties
Detroit style pizza

Yeah Pączki would have been a better choice

Heck even Almond Chicken would’ve been better than wet burrito

Wisconsin people eat perch every Friday night, or at least many of them do where I grew up in WI……

As for Mississippi mud pie for MS, that choice does reflect a certain level of laziness. I doubt it even originated here (it is a big river, afterall).

Tamales would have been a better pick, if being specific (yes, tamales and Mississippi are a thing), but the true dish of MS is the Blue Plate - a meat, starch, green veggie, cornbread (or a roll, for losers), and sweet tea.

Edit: points are doubled for gas station blue plates.

I had that experience but in reverse. Grew up catching and eating perch from Lake Michigan, one of my absolute favorite foods. First time I tried them out-of-state was the last.

Yes. Tamales would be good for MS.

I'm sure a lot of states are similar, but trying to peg Missouri as some single cultural entity is inaccurate.

Here's my list of #1 MO foods by area:

-Kansas City- Barbecued Brisket Burnt Ends
-St Louis- Toasted Ravioli
-Springfield/SW MO- Springfield style Cashew Chicken
-SEMO/Cape G- Liver Dumplings

CT should either be pizza or the hamburger (Louis Lunch).

I can't get the darn thing to load. CT isn't pizza? New Haven pizza or Louis Lunch are definitely the choices for state food.

Did they pick the hot dog in HTFD or the the steamed burger in Middletown? Because that would be fair, if a bit lazy. The other two are older and wayyyy more CT than the second two more recent choices.

You can get perch at just about any Friday night fish fry in Wisconsin. One of the best tasting fish, along with bluegills

Yeah but before every Friday night fish fry you are probably having an appetizer of fried cheese curds

I’ve lived in Oregon for 3 years now and have never had clams or seen it highlighted on a menu.

Honestly, I think we’ve taken pizza from New York

Lived in Mississippi 4 years and I never once heard somebody say the "Vicksburg-Natchez-Jackson area" before. Natchez is an hour and a half from Vicksburg and Jackson. Weird.

And, with Mississippi being the country's leading producer of catfish, I would have thought that a lay-up for their food. Instead they go with Mud Pie? Feels like this thing needs to separate foods from desserts.

Maybe the FFA can come up with a better version of this?
I agree that Mississippi is about the catfish too. That's what I thought of. For California, it's split by northern and southern Cal. North California is sourdough. South Cali is Tacos.

never heard the term Disco Fries in my life.....

Loaded fries sure.....

Not sure I'd call them a staple here tbh but whatever
Lived in NJ 35 years, and have also never heard of Disco fries. The Pork roll, egg, and cheese on a roll should be the proper choice here.

This is the correct answer. Also lived in NJ my entire life, I've never seen a single person order "disco fries".

Pizza would have been a lazy choice, but also acceptable.

Could be worse though......Shrimp Cocktail as a signature "dish"? Its literally taking shrimp and placing them in a glass.

Warm lobster roll, with Maine being a non-warm lobster roll. Awful choice.

Oh and Lambskin is definitely team perch. Used to catch them and walleye as a kid in Lake Erie / Detroit River

Remember fishing off the salt mines one time with a triple hook lure, you’d drop the hook and immediately have 3 on the line with more chasing them up

VA is certainly oysters aplenty but I'd think Smithfield/VA ham or even VA peanuts before that. But I hate oysters so maybe that's part of my thinking.

I'm in NorCal. Sourdough is iconic, sure, especially in the Bay Area, but Tacos are everywhere. I'd be fine with Tacos or Tri-Tip representing the entire state.

Yes, lobster roll for CT makes no sense to me. Maine sure.

Yeah, from Michigan and never heard of a wet burrito.

Mackinac Island fudge was my first thought. Pasties was my second, though that's more an Upper Peninsula thing but they are also HUGE there. Detroit style pizza I also would have expected first.

Yeah, I’ve been in NJ for 20+ years and I’ve never even heard of disco fries. Having lived in the state for most of my life now but never having eaten it, I’d still say pork roll/taylor ham is the one thing I’d associate as specifically NJ.

Most of the dishes on the list make sense though. I know not all of them may be considered the official dish by people inside the state, but most are what I would say people outside the state would most associate with those states.

Grew up in eastern PA and still frequent Jersey as my dad lives there and would agree 100% with the bold.

Yep. Also agreed. The times I was forced to venture to Wisconsin I specifically looked forward to a Friday fish fry and a bottle of Spotted Cow.

Cheese curds is a close second.

Okay so PA is absolutely the cheesesteak.

BUT:
1. Nobody there calls it a "Philly cheesesteak."
2. Nobody puts ****ing peppers on it. Or mayo or hot sauce for that matter. It's cheese (Wiz, provolone, or sharp American), fried onions, and maybe a long hot or ketchup. But that's it.

Ever hear of a cheesesteak hoagie?

I'm okay with Chimichanga for Arizona where basically all Mexican food is really good. The Navajo taco probably should have gotten some consideration as well but, since just general Mexican food doesn't really fit the exercise, I'm good with Chimichanga.

Of course. And it's pretty darn good as well. But that's a mere variation of the original cheesesteak (ala how lobster rolls have evolved).

PA is definitely one of those states where location matters. It’s such a wide state with basically Pittsburgh and Philly on the sides and not a whole lot in the middle. So cheesesteak wins because Philly is the much larger city. But western PA would be either pierogies or a Primanti sandwich.

Also, IMO, mushrooms are also a standard acceptable topping.

Colorado:
The first "Fool's Gold" sandwich, a sourdough loaf stuffed with peanut butter, blueberry jam, and a pound of bacon, was invented by the now-closed Colorado Mine Company, a restaurant in Denver.
Never heard of this but it sounds delicious.
Neither have I, and I've lived in Colorado for all of my 38 years.
I was expecting Rocky Mountain oysters for Colorado.

South Dakota should have been chislic, not Navajo tacos. I've never seen that on a menu anywhere during the 25 years I've lived here. (Also, I know it's just a made-up name for a dish, but the Navajo don't live anywhere near here.)

Edit: Poor Minnesota got a terrible pick as well, but a bunch of people have noted that one already. I'm slightly offended on behalf of New Mexico -- with all you had to choose from, you went with a freaking cheeseburger with one unusual condiment? Come on, man.
