State Hockey Championship Game Ends in Tie (1 Viewer)

Two schools share title after 7 OTsESPN.com

Sometimes seven is enough.

Ohio high schools Sylvania Northview and Cleveland St. Ignatius have been named ice hockey co-state champions after they played to a 1-1 draw after seven overtimes Saturday.

The shared title was agreed upon mutually by the head coaches, school administrators and Ohio High School Athletic Association administrators, the OHSAA said in a statement Saturday.

In high school hockey there is no shootout procedure. As a result, fatigued players led to the decision to call the game a tie.

"This is an opportunity to show that wins and losses, even in a state championship game, are not more important than player safety," the OHSAA said in a statement. "Had a player been seriously injured in the eighth overtime due to fatigue, the decision to allow the game to continue would have been seriously questioned more than the decision to end it."

No shame in co-champs. Seven overtimes is quite a lot. Apparently they were cramping and dehydrating. Makes no sense to lose a player to injury or death because of the eighth.

horrible.

You're telling me there was no method in place to solve a tie via shoot-out or something?

I'd rather lose than tie...

A tie is a slap in the face to people who play, watch, or enjoy sports in any capacity. Ties are one of the biggest reasons soccer won't get a leg up in this country over better sports.

I hope this leads to a rule change so it doesn't happen again.

The article said it would be against national rules to do a shoot-out. Coaches didn't want it anyway. Said it was a team game.

At some point, the game has to end and life has gotta go on.

There’s a national high-school hockey rule that mandates that a state championship game not end in a skills competition.

Stupid. Why not just pick up where they left off on another day if you don't want a shootout that badly?

Then change the rules so that a goalie has to be pulled at the end of a 3rd overtime or something.

There are ways other than shoot outs to significantly improve the odds of achieving a result.

I'll go with that. Or 4 on 4 for overtime. But high school rules are often ill-equipped to deal with this stuff.

Plus, in my defense, if you really wanted to win the game, you can pinch, take risks, etc.

Seven OTs (and it depends on how long they were -- I tried to read the article to find it) is a lot. High school OTs back when I played were fifteen minutes long.

That's a lot of hockey.

I'll agree that they shouldn't have played an 8th straight for safety concerns, but my suggestion or your suggestion would be vastly superior to a tie. Why even play the game if it's a tie?

My brother in law is a coach of a high school team that won the state championship in 2012. They got there by winning in a shoot out the day before. NY state fwiw

You are everything that is wrong with sports in America. You'd rather have a phony result than the proper one. Unless a winner is necessary, ties are always the right answer.

I hate contrived results. I understand why they use them (like PK's in soccer) but that does not make them better.

A win under real sporting circumstances is great but not when PK's, shootouts, removing players from the field etc, are used, I find them too contrived.

Have you ever played any organized sports competitively?I'd happily take a tie over a loss.
yes i played organized sports. and ties offend me almost as much as bad beats
There are losses I can look back on all the way to when I was 12 where I'd be happier looking back on a tie instead of a loss.

So a team should be crowned state champ bc they put a lucky shot into an empty net from 80 feet? The other kids lose on some stupid technicality and have to walk around with that forever.

Couldn't disagree more. Can't stand ties. Would rather walk out saying yes we won we were the better team or we lost, they were better today than having a tie of any kind.

I can understand why they stopped the game and can't fault them when it's only high school level. I can't understand why they can't continue the game at another time. First goal wins. Neither one of those teams are really champions IMO. Both teams will always wonder if they coulda won that game but they'll never know.

I think 7 OT periods should tell them pretty clearly what the right result was.

Sure. Only small minds can't accept sometimes things aren't wrapped up nicely in a little bow. Life isn't just full of winners and losers. Sometimes two people can try their best and reach the exact same result.

It will be talked about for the next 20 years and there will be a reunion game. A tie is fine.

As opposed to an 8th overtime loss, without question...

They both get their championship jackets, get the spoils of victory with the young ladies, and can look at each other like warriors and smile if they happen to see each other out.

Kind of a cool story, actually. Seven OTs???

It'll be talked about for 20 years but neither team will really be champions. ESPN will do a piece on the reunion game when all these guys are old, fat and have ugly wives. Almost every kid on both teams would say, let's continue this tomorrow, determine a real winner. But no. The message board cowboys here think a tie is fine which shows how long it's been since most of you competed in anything that mattered. Teams that make it to a state title work all year to become that good. Give so much of their free time and make sacrifices to try and be the best. A tie is no good.

Jesus, just take the jacket and smile. Life isn't so neat and pretty. We eat, compete, ####, and everyone moves on at some point. Then we all die.

A real winner is immortal, which is impossible.

Didn't you say in the NHL thread you played high school hockey? When you were that age and you played on a team winning and losing was pretty damn important, if you were one of those kids I don't think you'd be ok with a tie.

As an adult it's easy to say yea take the tie. Both teams are co champs and just be done with it. Those kids don't feel that way. No chance.

Yeah, played for a long time. After seven OTs and probably running eight or nine guys to do it, I'd have been fine with it as an adult, and would look back with respect for the other team.

I've also experienced serious dehydration as an adult, and watched someone on the football field almost die from it during practice in college. It was terrifying. If you've ever seen serious chest and body cramping, your opinion might be different.

But we respect each other, I think. I like your presence in the hockey thread. It's just my opinion.

They made the right call here.

I think it was the right call too, stopping the game at that time, but finishing the game at a later date is what they should have did IMO.

I want the best team to win the game.

And I'll admit the peoples associated with this game did give it a hell of a run by even allowing 7 OT's... i'm surprised they didn't pull the shoot at 5 for "player safety"

At some point we need to move the game in the direction of some sort of a result..... if the teams are so closely matched that they played that long to a draw, then that's an instance where we're just going to have to achieve some sort of result in some way and move on.

Far more important games in the world - olympic hockey, MLS Cup Championships, World Cup titles have hinged on shootouts... yeah it's kind of sucky, but at some point we need a result.

As an aside, there is almost never this type of problem in sports where it is easier to score, which is why I've recommended increasing the size of the goal for hockey and soccer especially in the past.

I think it was the right call too, stopping the game at that time, but finishing the game at a later date is what they should have did IMO.
i can definitely get behind this.... this was the most logical way to finish it out, but new rules should be put into place so it doesn't happen again.

In tennis with Isner vs. Mahut that went 70-68 in the 5th set which is absolutely ridiculous, there should have been a way set up to settle it... like once we get to 15-15 in the 5th set then we can have a tie-breaker... or something... but they didn't assign a tie to this match, they played it out over not only one extra day, but 2!

2 teams that are obviously as equal as you can get. Players on both teams exhausted and cramping up. Keep playing and lose on a fluke goal because you are not able to skate up to par?

Yeah, I'll take the tie and a state championship.

I compete every day. In situations that are much more important than a HS hockey game.
