Steelers (2007) (2 Viewers)

Porter's release really comes as no surprise. His cap hit was going to be over $6 million. There is no way they could afford him.
I don't agree with this. With Haynes cut, Hartings retiring, and Aaron Smith restructuting, the Steelers could have been between $3 and 5M under the cap AFTER paying Porter this year. I completely understand the move. But if they had wanted to keep him, they could have. I'll reserve judgement on this move until I see what they do in FA.

Starks, who received a one-year contract tender of $1.85 million from the Steelers, would bring the team a first-round draft choice if they decline to match a contract he would sign with another team as a restricted free agent.
Please, somebody sign him.

I wonder if they even discussed restructuring his contract? I doubt Porter would have done it, but would be interesting to see if they asked.

Looks like Davenport is our compliment to Fast Willie...I wouldn't expect a RB drafted on day one.

Steelers sign RB DavenportThursday, March 01, 2007By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-GazetteThe Steelers today signed backup running back Najeh Davenport to a two-year $2 million contract, paying him the kind of money that should put him high in their plans for next season.Davenport, who would have become an unrestricted free agent on Friday, received a $405,000 signing bonus, a salary of $595,000 this year and $1 million next year. The Steelers signed Davenport to a one-year contract after their first game last season when Green Bay released him. He eventually became their backup to starter Willie Parker after Verron Haynes was injured at mid-season. New Coach Mike Tomlin has stated a preference for using two running backs, something that is becoming a trend in the NFL.

I still hope they grab Michael Bush in the 3rd

Porter was great for a long time, but his time has expired. He may pull a chad brown and play decent elsewhere, either way the Steelers don't wanna pay the price to find out. What Im happy about is Polamalu is signed, hes more of the future than the past. Im not really salivating at the fact we signed Davenport, I think his nickname "dookie" is well deserved, he plays like ####. By watching him die on the field it makes me feel like he has hung around Duce Staley too much. In either case, I think the Steelers will draft a big guy to compete for the "bettis/compliment" role, so I think Davenport may shape up in camp and drop some lbs of fat and maybe put on some muscle, to me he looked weak last year. As I said earlier, he racked up most of his yardage against beaten opponents or back ups late in the 4th quarter. When it counted he normally got stuffed.

Lets not forget about the biggest transaction....signing St Pierre

No chance that he makes it to the 3rd. i think he will be the 3rd RB off of the board.

The Steelers need the cap room to sign players near UFA to extensions and $3M wasn't going to do it. Parker's $6.1 M cap hit is better served to that than to keep Porter for one year.Be prepared for the release of Deshea Townsend and Chris Gardocki...

3rd is a stretch (round and RB taken). Coming off broken leg etc. I dont see him in anyone's top 5 RBs right now

I didnt know Davenport's nickname is "Dookie"
Yeah I knew about Dookies history for a while since I followed the Packers but I never got the impression Steeler Nation was up on the reason for his moniker. Basically he was criminally charged with taking a dump in a Coed's closet while in college.Dookie Davenport

With only one year left on the contract, the only way to restructure would be to extend it. I think the aftertaste of Jason Gildon kept the Steelers from even considering that.

I wonder who is going to come hard at Porter. Steelers could potentially re-sign him if no one comes knocking with big $$ a la Jamal Lewis, but I have a feeling someone will throw too much money at him. Probably Seattle, the Jets, or New England.

I just want him out of the AFCN.

Reading on the stillers scout board that somenoe heard Shefter that the Ratbirds would be persuing JP. :D
It sounds like Thomas isn't going back to the Ravens so this makes sense. It would funny to see him and Ray Lewis kiss and makeup. They would have the biggest loudmouth linebackers in the NFL.

Miami is also interested.

Is anyone actually surprised that the Steelers aren't doing anything in free agency? You shouldn't be...remember, this is the team whose biggest signing of this decade was James Farrior, who only had 1 good season at that point.

Of course, the difference between prior years and right now is that The Steelers right now are 10-12M under the cap (when's the last time we couuld say that? :pics: ) -- And that doesn't include the money saved with the likely departure of Gardocki and Townsend. I don't think they cut Porter only for Troy's contract. They have to do something at LB, IMO.

A pretty good signing though. What people fail to consider is signing your own players that are FAs or in the final year of a contract is more important than signing FAs from other teams...

True. True.Polamalu was the biggie, but I wouldnt be surprised if they make a run at a FA RB to better address defense and offensive lineman in the draft.

I'm honestly expecting to see Moss, Revis or Carriker in the 1st and a buttload of line and LB prospects in the rest of the draft. Maybe a potential backup QB. Another boring Steeler draft that only looks good three years from now when they have replacements for Smith, Hampton, Farrior and Faneca without missing a beat.

The Steelers are set at their skill positions on offense so I doubt you'll see any "exciting" picks. The Steelers must improve their pass rush, add depth at LB, and solidy the OL because Ben was getting killed last season. If they can do that, I will be VERY happy with a "boring" draft.I don't see them drafting a backup QB any earlier than the 6th round. They'll bring someone in just to get a fourth arm for camp but they are set with Ben, Batch and St. Pierre whom the'vey just extended a qualifying offer to.

I was just thinking that Batch is getting up in years. I forgot about the St. Pierre deal. He's been around a while and is definately worth having as a #3 but they did give O.Jacobs a shot last year. I agree that it'll be a late round pick, but a quality backup QB is always necessary and for a late round flier to a team that doesn't have a whole lot of needs, I can see a round 5-7 pick on QB unless someone really solid falls way too far.I did say boring - meaning nothing that everybody will be talking about the day after the draft. A very, very good draft is also what I meant in that there will be players that will be starting and filling "unfillable" holes when guys like Porter ask for too much $ after their 30th birthday. Anthony Smith from last year is the most recent pick that I can't wait to see starting. The only "skill position" need I can see is maybe a guy like Revis in the 1st. Taylor got a huge deal and looked mediocre last year. McFadden is hot and cold, and rumor has it that Townsend is headed out of town. Nobody is really thrilled with Coclough (sp?) and who else is there? Colbert and Rooney definately have shown a tendancy to go corner early and it wouldn't surprise me to see it again.

Steelers Big Ben takes steps to regain top form By Scott BrownTRIBUNE-REVIEWSunday, March 4, 2007LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Go ahead and say he stunk in some games last season.Blame him for the Steelers not making the playoffs a year after they rampaged through them. But question his dedication, and that's when Ben Roethlisberger starts firing back. That's when he talks about how he signed a couple of football helmets in exchange for a free gym pass so he could work out last week while he was in Las Vegas.Or how he calls Bruce Arians almost daily with a question even though the new Steelers offensive coordinator has told Roethlisberger the playbook he has been studying is only a first draft.Challenge the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl to become an elite quarterback, as first-year Steelers coach Mike Tomlin almost certainly did when the two had dinner recently, but don't raise eyebrows or doubts over his assertion that he is willing to do what it takes to succeed."Other than my family, there's nothing I care more about than what I do," Roethlisberger said. "I want to be the best that's ever played this game, and I know I'm far from it because of the way I've been playing."Roethlisberger had the dubious distinction of throwing more interceptions (23) than any NFL quarterback in 2006. Tomlin brought in a new quarterbacks coach (Ken Anderson) and later said in regard to Roethlisberger, "He's got to roll up his sleeves and come to work every day and be willing to do the drudgery that's required to be great, and I know he'll be capable of doing that."Connect the dots, starting with Roethlisberger's regression, and it's not hard to see why a perception has emerged that the Steelers' franchise quarterback needs to be nudged, if not pushed, toward greatness. He appeared to be on a path toward that before a well-documented detour nearly cost him his career and even his life. The motorcycle accident that happened last June and the impact it had on Roethlisberger's third NFL season recently became a hot topic of discussion.Former Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt said at the NFL Scouting Combine that the trauma Roethlisberger experienced from the accident, which required him to have major facial surgery, may have affected him on the field. He experienced more trauma right before the season when he had an emergency appendectomy. He also was knocked out of an Oct. 22 game with a concussion.Asked about the cumulative effect of everything that happened to him, Roethlisberger said, "It's hard for even me to say. I never really felt like I was afraid to really get hit; maybe after the appendectomy a little bit because my stomach hurt, I didn't want to get hit in the stomach. But I don't feel like I was ever timid or too afraid to be out there playing."Roethlisberger said he is sure he couldn't have done anything more to overcome all of the medical travails he experienced last season. He spent so much time in the weight room following the appendectomy and concussion that his backup, Charlie Batch, said to him at one point, "Ben, are you going to burn yourself out? You're lifting too much."The approach he took to get back in 2006 is the same one he is taking to getting back on track.Instead of taking several months off after the season as he had done in the past, Roethlisberger said he started his offseason workouts in the second week of January. While he hasn't been throwing so he can rest his arm, Roethlisberger said he has been lifting weights, doing extensive cardiovascular work and pool exercises and studying the playbook that Arians has been putting together. The key to Roethlisberger having a big -- and redeeming -- season in 2007 may lie in him taking a more relaxed approach."Since winning the Super Bowl, he's put more pressure on himself," Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward said.Ward's advice to his quarterback: Don't put everything on your shoulders, broad as they may be."Sometimes put the pressure on me to make a play for you," Ward said. "Throw it and let me be the guy that makes the catch, chew out your offensive line if they don't block someone right. Don't feel like you have to go out and single-handedly win the game."During a break from "ESPN The Weekend" at Walt Disney World's MGM Studios last Friday, Roethlisberger conceded he has to reconcile his quest for greatness with not running too hard after it."At times (in 2006), I did feel like I was trying to be too good, trying to be perfect, if you will, instead of just being me," Roethlisberger said. While usually as guarded with his comments as he was at Disney (Roethlisberger was accompanied by bodyguards to various activities), he spoke freely on his 25th birthday about a number of things, including how the adversity he experienced over the last year has changed him."I laugh a lot more, I'm more relaxed, smiling," Roethlisberger said. "I can still get upset at times, but I think I'm a calmer person."That new perspective has not doused his desire, Roethlisberger said, which is why he takes criticism over his work ethic so personally. And those who question how serious he is about leading the team that is sacred to Western Pennsylvania and beyond?"They're crazy," Roethlisberger said.

Steelers look for Porter's replacementMonday, March 05, 2007By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-GazetteThe Steelers take their first steps to try to replace Joey Porter when they have a look at the guy who was displaced in New England by Adalius Thomas.Tully Banta-Cain, a 26-year-old outside linebacker with the Patriots, will visit the Steelers on Wednesday. He played four years with New England and had 5.5 sacks for them last season, his first as a starter. The Patriots signed Thomas, considered the top free agent outside linebacker after his contract expired with Baltimore, over the weekend. The Steelers today entertained their first player in free agency when former Pitt punter Andy Lee paid a visit to their facility on the South Side. Lee is a restricted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers. If the Steelers signed him, the 49ers would have the right to match the contract; if they declined to match, the Steelers would have to give them a sixth-round draft choice in return. The Steelers released Porter, who had seven sacks last season, last Thursday before a $1 million roster bonus was due him.

Summons Issued For Veteran Steelers Player

POSTED: 3:52 pm EST March 5, 2007

Steelers cornerback Deshea Townsend is facing an assault charge.

A summons has been issued for Townsend.

He's accused of simple assault in connection with an altercation at Station Square early Friday morning.

Townsend and Steelers practice squad member Raymond Burgess were allegedly involved in a fight at Margarita Mama's.

Burgess got into a fight and then Townsend jumped in, according to police reports.

Townsend is accused of punching a man in the head and face with a closed fist.

The Steelers will not comment on the matter.

6 PM UPDATE: Townsend's attorney, Bob Delgreco, says, "Deshea categorically denies being involved in any manner."

Yeah I read that earlier...looks like he hits harder off the field.Any updates on Polamalu signing? I hope it is true but I haven't been able to find anything definitive.

Nothing has been ironed out yet, but Id expect something this week.

I can hear it already "Tully the Bully!"He's as good as signed. 5.5 sacks and 26 years old makes Tully qualified for a good 3 year offer.
Ever since I first heard the rumor I thought he'd be a good fit for what they're looking to do defensively. He can play 3-4 OLB and can play with his hand on the ground as a 4-3 end. I wouldn't be surprised to see him locked up rather quickly.

Porter to Miami? I hope so. Rather see him go to the Fins than the Bungles....
