Steelers defense takes hit today at practice (1 Viewer)

The Steelers defense was dealt a major blow today when both LB Joey Porter and CB Deshea Townsend

went down with hamstring injuries. Bill Cowher had a rare Wednesday briefing to announce the injuries and said both could be game time decisions for the game this week against Kansas City.

If Porter is unable to go then 3rd string LB Arnold Harrison would get the start because backup LB James Harrison was injured last week in San Diego. If Townsend can't play then Bryant McFadden would get the start at CB. The Steelers are especially thin at CB since Ricardo Colclough was placed on IR last week.

If Porter can't go that is a huge blow, as Harrison is a solid replacement but is injured himself. The pass rush will be hard to generate without either of those guys. Townsend is not a big of a concern to me, as McFadden is able to step right in and play. They may have some difficulties in nickel situations, but the Chiefs don't have alot of weapons at the wr position.

Agreed. The Porter is injury is a bigger concern as Arnold Harrison is somewhat of an unknown commodity.McFadden doesn't have as much experience as Townsend but is taller, faster and hit likes a ton of bricks.

Just heard it on ESPN-Pittsburgh radio, smart guy. Why would I make this up?

No need for name calling, I would just like some confirmation. I can not find this information anywhere, and as a Steeler fan I would think you would desire some proof as well.

Woa!You are always on Steeler stuff, Godsbro., so I know you are dead on.This is bad bad news for the Steelers' defense - and good news for opposing RBs and WRs.

Sorry. I just got ticked off on the BS as it implied I was lying. As for proof, I heard Bill Cowher's voice reporting this on the radio. That is good enough for me.

:lmao: Calling out Godsbrother on his Stiller news! :D Just made me laugh, that's all
:thumbup:Can tell who's been here a while and who's new - FYI, Steelnation, Godsbrother is "da man" on Steeler info round here. He's yet to be off the mark, as far as I can tell. And, FYI, Gridiron Assassin on the Bears and BassnBrew on the Panthers - just simply accept their news breaks as well founded.

If it was from that fat buffoon Mark Madden, then there is a very good chance that the report is wrong.

Nothing from the Post-Gazette, Trib, or Steelers.

ETA: If God's Brother heard it outta Cowher's mouth, the OK. (and atrocious spelling)

McFadden should be starting as far as I am concerned anyway. How serious is the Jerome Harrison injury??

Thanks for the info as I am fairly new here. My apologies if true Godsbro!!

No problem. I didn't mean to come across as a tool.Cowher just said that both Townsend and Porter injured their hamstrings and didn't know to what extent. He said they did not finish practice and was listing them as questionable. If they can't go the Steelers are awfully thin on defense, especially with DE Brett Keisel listed as questionable as well.

Steelnation - one more for ya.

Of our in-house guys, trust any "news" that comes out of Cecil Lammey's mouth.

No worries.

The Chiefs are without their starting Pro Bowl QB, left tackle, nickelback, backup running back, quite possibly their elite return man and useful wideout, and it's likely that their starting Pro Bowl running back will be less than 100%.

Again, no worries. The Steelers are healthy everywhere it counts.

Steelers' Porter, Townsend, leave practice with injuries

Wednesday, October 11, 2006

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers, losers of three straight games, were hit with more bad news today when both linebacker Joey Porter and cornerback Deshea Townsend left practice with hamstring injuries.

Coach Bill Cowher listed both as questionable for Sunday's game against Kansas City.

Compounding the problem at outside linebacker is that top backup James Harrison already has been scratched this week because of a high ankle sprain. Also, starting defensive end Brett Keisel is listed as questionable with a bruised rib.

Another player joined the injury list today: Starting guard Kendall Simmons is probable with a foot injury that developed when it was burned while he was undergoing medical treatment.

What was already a tempting KC +7 is beginning to look much better. I'm sure that line will drop a bit now.
The Chiefs' defense is good enough to keep them in most games, including the upcoming one, but it's not yet good enough to overcome such a mistake-prone offense. The Steelers, like every team the Chiefs have played bar the 49ers, will get a couple of gifts that they should convert into scores. They'll cover.

Not to hijack here, BUT, KC has a better defense and special teams unit than Pitt right now. It sounds odd, but it's true. That alone is enough to show plenty of value in KC +7. Throw in the injury woes of Pitt (Keisel is also out I believe), and the way Big Ben is playing right now and this game should be very tight throughout which makes 7 points so valuable. I wouldn't be surprised to see Pitt win, or shocked to see them cover, but the value lies in KC +7 regardless.

Definatly not a time to :towelwave:
Your obsession is unbecoming, really. You also cannot spell worth a damn.
To post and work is hard! Spelling is the least of my concerns ......... again nice insult from Evilgrin (wouldn't expect anything else)As for the KC vs Pitt betting line........... TAKE KC as long as LJ is going to play, but it seems like he will be ok.As for the Hawks: our smile is: :coffee:

Outside of that first game against Miami, where he really dominated, Porter hasn't done much of anything. Townsend misplayed the ball on two tds vs. San Diego. I'm more than ready to see what McFadden can do. Maybe the backups will be hungry and play with a sense of urgency. Besides, the real playmakers for the Steelers - Pola, Haggins, Farrior, and the D-line - are still in place.

Huard: 5 TD's 0 INT'sRoethlisberger: 0 TD's 7 INT'sKC's turnover differential: 0 (1INT 6FUM)PIT's turnover differential: -3 (7INT 3FUM)I think the Steelers are more likely to give a couple of gifts, than to get them.

Quite possibly but the Steelers with Roethlisberger played Jax & SD on the road and Cincinnati. KC with Huard played SF and at Arizona. Just a little bit of a difference, no?

Ramifications? Is the Steelers D on a rapid decline?
Would like to get some insight/opinions into this as well -- is this a short term hit, or may it spell long-term trouble for this unit.
The Porter injury is more of a problem than Townsend. The Steelers have an excellent backup LB in James Harrison but he has already been ruled out and so rookie free agent Arnold Harrison will get his first start if Porter can't go. Harrison played well in preseason but only has 1 career tackle in the regular season so to say he is an unknown commodity is an understatement. The Steelers could move DE Brett Keisel to the OLB spot but Keisel is also questionable this week.As far as Townsend's replacement goes, I think second-year corner Bryant McFadden is definitely up to the task and might actually be better as he is taller, faster and tougher. But the injury leaves them awfully thin at corner and they would likely use 4 safeties in the dime.

I think you forgot that Huard started @DEN as well.Either way, I don't care if Roethlisberger played @CHI 3 games in a row. 0TD and 7INT would get a lot of guys benched. I just think it's odd that he labeled KC as the mistake prone offense is all, and thought I'd point out why with actual facts.

No, :loco: Bench LJ.
 I'm seriously considering benching LJ this week, so info on the Steelers D this week is helpful. I have Rudi vs. TB and Tatum vs. Oak, and LJ seems the odd man out this week unless PIT's D has some holes. :blackdot:
