Bettis said on a conference call Wednesday that he thought the Steelers were not as strong at halfback as they were last season, when he was their top backup.

It proved to be prophetic in one way; two days later, the Steelers traded for a halfback from the New England Patriots, Patrick Cobbs. They also put in a waiver claim for running back Artose Pinner when he was released by Detroit over the weekend, but he was awarded on another waiver claim to Minnesota.

RB Stable is Cobbs, Haynes, Kreider, Parker, and Staley....which to me doesn't look too deep. What to make of them trying to get Pinner off waivers? IF they got him, would that have been Staley's good-bye or would they ask a RB to go to the practice squad?

If something would happen to FWP, who is their go to guy now? Staley or Cobbs?

I wouldn't be so sure of that. Haynes is the third down back and I don't see Cobbs or Staley filling that role. My guess is that Haynes would see increased playing time but would remain the 3rd down back. Cobbs and/or Duce would get 15-20 carries, depending on which was more productive.

It clearly seems that the guys they're going after (Cobbs and Pinner) are the power-back types, which likely points to some concern that Parker may not be able to take the pounding. Thus, they probably need a solid complementary RB to take on the tough yards Bettis used to get.

I suppose Staley and Haynes are not viewed as one of those guys in Cowher's eyes.
