I'm not so sure. I doubt he'll come close to the numbers he put up with Delhomme, but if Newton progresses - coupled with a top-tier running game to support the offense - Smith could surprise on the upside. I would think that the team will be forced to throw the ball a lot.Fantasy value![]()
The Panthers aren't a bad franchise. It sucks for Smith that the last three years he has been a victim of bad QB play, but he chose to stay with the Panthers this coming season. I hope Newton has a decent year, and Smith won't regret deciding to stay put. I wouldn't have blamed him if he continued to want to be traded, but as a fan I'm glad Smith decided to stay. He is one of my favorite Panther players ever. Here is a quote from him yesterday: "I'm going to be here and I'm ready to show people a side of me that they haven't seen," Smith said. "I'm staying in Carolina." Gotta love him.Panthers are my 2nd favorite team but I'm sad for Smitty. He deserves to be with a better franchise and a real QB.![]()
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith met with general manager Marty Hurney and head coach Ron Rivera Wednesday, July 27, and said he wants to remain with the Panthers. The Panthers, in turn, have taken him off of the trading block. Smith told ESPN's Adam Schefter Thursday, July 28, that he wants to be with the Panthers until he retires. Smith has two years remaining on his contract, making $7 million this year and $7.5 million next season. It is not clear if the Panthers are considering giving Smith a contract extension or raise.
I somewhat agree with you, but I dont think that Newton will be terrible in the position he is put in. I think he would be terrible if he had to throw the ball significantly to win games but he is not going to be asked to do that. I envision something like Sanchez first year and there will be a heavy dose of running the ball. If Newton can be a game manager and limit the int's then I think 7 wins is feasible and if the ball bounces their way 8 or 9 might be attainable. That would mean everyone would have to stay healthy from Shockey to T Davis but I could probably see it.'LHUCKS said:I probably wont draft him because I think Newton will be terrible, but I could see the scenario where he surprises. It's more than feasible. They are a 4-5 win team even if Newton plays like Clausen. Any negetive QB play will be more than favorably offset by Fox being gone. If Newton can just be serviceable I definately see 7 wins.I somewhat agree with you, but I dont think that Newton will be terrible in the position he is put in. Smith just got some help in the form of Greg OlsenNice move for the Panthers (depending on what they gave up to get him)
Olsen is another Chudinski protege. I am convinced we will see a return of the TE in Carolina.'simey said:'Yenrub said:Smith just got some help in the form of Greg OlsenNice move for the Panthers (depending on what they gave up to get him)I'm so glad Steve decided to stay. I'm also glad to see that there is a good chance we will be utilizing the TE position more in the passing game like we did during the Wesley Walls days.
Word is that Carolina gave up a third round pick only. No other players. Seems like a good deal for Carolina.'Yenrub said:Smith just got some help in the form of Greg OlsenNice move for the Panthers (depending on what they gave up to get him)
In terms that you can relate to, saying John Fox in 2009 and 2010 was an average coach is comparable to saying GWB is the greatest president evah.Disappointed that this means no Smitty in SD, but I'm happy for the Panthers and think (hope) they'll surprise in '11. Though I am mystified at the Fox hate. I certainly don't have the knowledge that you homers do, but I really like the guy his first few years in Charlotte. Was he really that bad in '10?
I was a fan of his for his first several years but yes. Terrible attitude, packed it in. Should have quit, he stayed to collect the check. IMO.Disappointed that this means no Smitty in SD, but I'm happy for the Panthers and think (hope) they'll surprise in '11. Though I am mystified at the Fox hate. That's not entirely fair. He didn't get the players he wanted and Jerry did leave him holding the bag. Now Fox's real sin was the inability to win consistently and to leave coordinators to do their job especially offensive ones.In terms that you can relate to, saying John Fox in 2009 and 2010 was an average coach is comparable to saying GWB is the greatest president evah.Disappointed that this means no Smitty in SD, but I'm happy for the Panthers and think (hope) they'll surprise in '11. I agree with you. I'll also add that Fox had a massive amount of injuries some years which made back to back winning seasons hard, and he was too loyal to Jake the last two years when it was obvious that Jake was struggling. That's not entirely fair.
