The latest I heard was that he is resting right now b/c he had an ingrown toenail removed and that he is not sitting out b/c of his hamstring. From Fanball...

Panthers: Smith won't play
The News
Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith will not play in Thursday's preseason game against the Dolphins, according to the Charlotte Observer. He has not practiced this week since having an ingrown toenail cut.
Our View
Smith missed 17 days of training camp with a strained left hamstring. He performed well in practice after returning from the hamstring injury, so it appears the toenail is the only thing bothering him at this point.

i just had my ingrown toenail cut out a few weeks ago. my day 3 i was walking around with no problem. actually day 1 was ok.
