Steve Smith needs microfracture surgery

The New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano reports that Steve Smith will need microfracture surgery and a mosaicplasty on his left knee.

It's apparently not as bad as it sounds, though. Vacchiano referred to the prognosis as "good", saying the rehab will be lengthy, but the injury is to a non-weight bearing area of the knee. Smith will be on crutches for six weeks after the procedure. Despite the "good" prognosis, this certainly isn't a best-case scenario. Smith will be a free agent after the season, so it will be interesting to see how his contract status will be affected. Dec. 16 - 12:37 pm et

That sucks. Hopefully he returns to form next season and stays with the Giants. He has a nice rapport with Eli.

I hate the word "microfracture". Nothing good ever come out of that word.
I don't think it's quite as bad as it used to be. IIRC Colston had microfracture surgery a couple of years ago and seems to be fine.

Not that it applies here, but the other words I hate to hear in sports are Dr. Death himself, James Andrews.
