Steve Smith Sr.? Don't doubt 89 (1 Viewer)

When the Carolina Panthers paid Steve Smith to go away after 13 seasons as the best player in franchise history, the iconic wide receiver promised there would be "blood and guts everywhere" in his first showdown with his old team.

After generating his most receiving yards in 20 games last week,NFL Turning Point caught Smith on film sending the Panthersanother unmistakable threat.

"Hey, if you (expletive) think I can't play," Smith exclaimed, via Black and Blue Review, "you're gonna find out in Week 4, (expletive)!"

The Panthers, of course, travel to Baltimore in Week 4.

Smith's 118 yards in the season opener were 44 more than he had in any game last season. He's already more than halfway to his 2013 total of plays over 20 yards. He's leading the NFL with 15 targets. Clearly there's plenty of life left in his 35-year-old legs.

On the Around The NFL Podcast's Season Kickoff Preview, we predicted that Smith would end upleading the Ravens in receiving yards this season. Following through on a vow to make his former team pay would help one of the most dominant receivers of his generation reach that goal.

The latest "Around The NFL Podcast" makes some bold predictions about the 2014 season and backs them up by putting some sandwiches on the line.
Listen... i have doubted Steve Smith in the past, and this guy may not be what he use to be, but he would easily be a hall of famer if he had QB's that were worth a **** throughout his career.... "Don't Doubt 89".... he is out to prove that he can still play this year.. and you gotta love the way he plays... I think he could easily pass Torrey Smith this year... thoughts??

I was all about to say how he's filling the Kevin Walter role in Kubiak's offense and that at best he's the 3rd receiving option on a run first offense but than I saw this vine. Meh, I'm not betting against that.

I think he finishes higher than T. Smith this year. Can he stay healthy though? not sure. He seems motivated for a nice comeback season.

Steve replaced TS on deep routes. TS is now the possession receiver but can still go long if needed - this is his first foray into short routes but he will improve as the year develops. To bad for those who thought Steve was old, slow, and be converted to a possession receiver (still runs a 4.3/4.4).

Steve Smith can't be a big producer anymore without another good WR to take some coverage away, but with the threat of Torrey Smith, it will open up plenty of opportunities for Steve Smith. Plus, the Ravens play-calling is usually far better than that of Carolina's.

honestly I am more excited to see how he does vs the Panthers this week than I am about any of my stupid fantasy teams... I think he blows up

10 catches 140 yds, 2 tds... call me crazy all you want

He will have a big game this week. He always does when he's playing angry.

I have a feeling that after this week however, he'll start to trail off a little bit. For Smith, everything has been leading up to this week. All of the fire he's playing with is because of the situation with the Panthers and he's playing like a man possessed. Once he's done with Carolina, he's going to have that out of his system and drop back a little bit.

Don't get me wrong, he'll be a solid player, like he always has been...but he's getting older and can't sustain this kind of production. In week five he'll pull a hammy or something and that will be enough to slow him down for the rest of this year.

Of all the players in the NFL, Smith is by far the easiest one to predict because he ALWAYS plays based on his current attitude. If he's happy and in a good place with himself, he's going to trail off a bit.

I don't agree with you. Smitty always plays with fire and an attitude. This offense is better suited for him in his older years, and I hope he has an awesome season. I hope the Panthers win of course this week, but I hope Smitty has a great game.

Based on all the information available, it appears parting ways with Smitty had little to do with his on field ability. Anyone questioning said ability just needs to watch him.

over/under on number of Panthers players punched by Smitty? ;)

I hope he has a career game...and I'm a Panthers fan.

yea same here... long time fan here, and the Panthers did him wrong.. i could care less if they win this week, and just hope he destroys them... he was the reason I watched the Panthers through some of the tough years because even if we got destroyed he would not go down without fighting or causing penalties on the defense or making some awesome play like the one in week 1 against the bengals defender

Traded Smith for TY Hilton in a deal with some other players. Already regret it. REALLY wanted to start him v the Panthers Sunday.

But yes I think there's also a chance he gets ejected for kicking someone's ### in this game :)

Panthers fan here - I'll always love #89. I hope he has a big game... and that the Panthers still win. :)

Agreed. Any fan who is cheering for Smith over the Panthers isn't really a true fan in my mind. Smith, for all the positive, had plenty of negative moments in Carolina. His play on the field (even though quite frankly he wasn't that good the last couple years) had little to do with him leaving. This is a team that has a lot of leaders and is very close. Smith wasn't exactly known as being a good teammate...often causing unneccesary drama.

I love Smith and I want him to do well this season...but on Sunday, he's the enemy. Yes, I think he'll play very well...but I would love nothing more than for the team to completely shut him down.

Time will tell. Smith is playing over his head (at least at his current age) right now. He will not sustain this level of play for 16 games...I'm positive of that. He is already dropping passes, a common occurrence later in his career in Carolina. Next will come the small injuries (that happen with age).

looks to me flacco absolutely loves throwing to him
Flacco loves throwing to anyone who can get open and who usually hangs onto the ball. Sadly for the Ravens, Smith is only the 3rd person Flacco's had who can do so.

Go Steve Smith Sr.!

I told someone today that I wouldn't be surprised if Smith didn't self-combust before he can get out of the tunnel, he'll be so wound up.

Over/under on the # of taunting/conduct/PF penalties he gets? 3.5?

Loved this Smitty story from Bill Barnwell's latest Grantland column:

Let me tell you a story. During my year living in Vegas, I played a fair amount of poker. One day, I was playing at Mandalay Bay and talking to the guy next to me, who eventually revealed he had played wideout on the same junior college team (Santa Monica College) as Smith and Chad Johnson, then Chad Ochocinco. Somebody at the table asked him about Ochocinco and he had nothing but hilarious stories to tell about Ochocinco goofing around and having fun.

I asked him about Smith, though, and the man’s brow immediately furrowed. His smile disappeared. He told me a story of getting into an argument with Smith over some long-forgotten situation where he was in the right. The poker player was a younger man then, and as many of us were as young men, he got very obstinate about being in the right and was willing to turn an otherwise irrelevant slight into a fight. He got to the point where he was about ready to throw down … at which point Smith escalated the tension about 10 levels beyond anything my man could have ever generated at his most wronged. He looked into Smith’s eyes and saw a rage he could never hope to match. In sheer self-preservation mode, he apologized to Smith and got as far away as possible. It was a lot like the high school bully scene from Louie, only with one Steve Smith instead of a bunch of high schoolers.

As he finished the story, I laughed in support of the guy’s situation and said knowingly, “I guess you don’t #### with Steve Smith.” He looked at me with great sincerity, as if to warn me out of even the slightest possible hint of serious interest in the pursuit, and said very clearly: “Do not #### with Steve Smith.”

You'd think Smith was the first aging veteran to have his team move on from him.....I hope the panthers put four guys on him so he can't catch one pass. He'll be ejected in the first 15 minutes if they shut him down.

Big fan of Steve Smith. Had him on many rosters through the years. Love how he plays with such intense passion ALL the time. Similar to Doug Baldwin up here in Seattle. Plays with a huge chip on his shoulder. Sure, Smith is faster and stronger, but Baldwin has that same fire. Up here he's called ADB (angry Doug Baldwin).

IMO this has officially been overhyped now. Don't see how he can possibly live up to the expectation of a huge game.

Anyone else sense a let down with all this hype?
What hype?
Seriously?

Its been talked about all week on ESPN and NFL Network.

Its been talked this morning on ESPN and NFL Network.

There was an article in my sports section this morning about it.

Members of the forum are posting about it.

What exactly in your mind equates to "hype"?

EDIT: NFL Network about to ANOTHER "Steve Smith Update".

Definitely helping teams early win some games. Argh! cause I don't have him.

Odd but the guy who has him in my league has not started him any time this year.
