"Because of injuries to Fred Taylor (ankle) and Sammy Morris (knee), New England may be in the market to plug some holes in its depleted backfield, and they could have an interest in St. Louis running back Steven Jackson, the Sporting News' Mike Florio reports. "

Is this really the crap they are writing out on the east coast?

Why don't they just trade for ADP?

It seems like a viable option.

Theoretically, the Pats could just barely get Jackson and stay under the cap. They have over $5 million in cap room. Although I still don't see this happening.

Any "news report" with 'may' and 'could' in it is not a news report.

...in other news Blog and sports writers contunue to make up stories to get web traffic to sell ad space.

This and the TO to Bears, both seem to be speculation. Do the people writing this stuff have actual info? Do they think that a GM will read their article and think, "Yeah we should go get that player". Seems to me like this just people putting out their ideas because people want to read that their team is making a bold move just before the trade deadline.

As a Jackson owner (throw in on a trade) I would love for him to go to the Patriots, or anywhere for that matter.
The guy is top 10 in PPR...you don't have to be embarrased by stating how you got him. Be proud; say it now, "I am an SJ owner, and I am pretty prooud of it."

Jackson just signed a long term deal with the Rams. The Rams couldn't afford the HUGE cap hit.
I highly doubt this is going to happen, BUT the Patriots do have the cap money and they have been making a series of odd roster moves over the last 24 hours. Could these moves be to free up cap space?I say there is about a 5% chance this deal or another similar deal gets done.

At least the Owens one makes a little more sense financially than the Jackson one does.

Yeah, that's all fine and dandy except for this is a TD only league (I know, I've tried to get the guys to move on to the 21st century but they are set in their ways) Jackson is tied at RB 42 with a lot of guys.

Thanks for making my point

They were talking about this on WEEI this morning.Makes the outright releases of Galloway and Banta-Cain make sense.

Bill Simmons spent about 15 minutes in convo with Mike Lombardi trying to turn the conversation back to this trade idea. File under podcasts I only needed to listen to once.

Listening to EEI right now. They're talking about the possibility of SJax or Shawn Merriman coming to NE from the Chargers.SJax has a 5.5Mil base salary, while the Pats just cleared 2.8MIL of space with todays cuts.

BTW, Merriman has a 2.87MIL salary.

The Pats only saved $25K by cutting Banta-Cain. I believe they saved $790K against the cap in dumping Galloway, but Banta-Cain's release does little cap wise.

Well we all better get used to this kind of crap. An uncapped year is on the horizon and teams like the Cheatriots will spend there ways to championships whenever possible.

They're saying TBC will be resigned at a more future cap friendly number.

I'm sure what you are saying is right, but I'm not sure what they are saying is accurate. But I've learned that most of the time many members of the media are realtively clueless in terms of cap hits and cap management.

Jackson's numbers are disappointing for a first rounder. We all know the reasons and we've seen that Jackson actually looks pretty good when he gets the ball, but he hasn't put up first-round-pick numbers.

This was just on the local news in the last day or two. Not the PAts in particular but trading Jackson in general. It is not possible. The cap hit would be $5 million dollars immediately and they don't have that room. I'm a Rams homer and would love to see them do a Hershel Walker to Minnesota type deal with SJax but it just can't happen. Not unless the Rams could also dump salary to the Pats but I don't see that happening either...

TBC was only making $620K this year. I'm not sure they can even go much lower than that based on his number of years of service.

Look at the bright side: the Bills will finally have a good reason for being such a terrible, hopeless, awful team. :welcome:

That's fine, i'm sure you are a lifelong Pats fan and were going to games before Kraft bought the team.Oh wait, your stadium was empty and franchise was on the verge of moving...

Sour grapes. Maybe one day, the Toronto Bills will lose four straight Super Bowls win a Super Bowl, and you'll have one less thing to be bitter about.

Eric Alexander was also cut. Sounds like he and Banta-Cain will be re-signing with the Pats later in the week.

Patriots have just re-signed TBC according to Adam Scheffter.

Pats fan from texas? Boy, you've come full circle! So let me guess, you jumped from the Cowboys to the Pats after the Boys fell off. You're a frontrunner bandwagon fan and the Pats superbowl wins will always have question marks surrounding them after spygate came out.
