Stevie Johnson traded to San Francisco (1 Viewer)

Good deal for the 49ers. Not too bad for the Bills either considering it was known he was on the way out

Have to think this is horrible for Stevie owners, no? He was going to be the #2 or #3 (slot guy) in a possible spread offense to the no question #4 passing option on a running team (behind Crab, Davis and Boldin). Even rosterable in smaller leagues at this point?

Terrible for Stevie owners until Boldin retires.

Side note: Panthers are still inept.

As it has been mentioned in the Bills thread, I think Buffalo should have kept Johnson and used him either while grooming Watkins or along with Watkins and Woods. That being said, they got a better pick than I thought they would have.

As far as the 49ers, I think this helps Kap's value, but may have slightly knocked down the values of Crab, Boldin and Davis. And as for the Quinton Patton I just gave a 2nd rounder for last month, guess I'm just holding him for another year on the taxi squad.

Crabtree is a FA after this year and Boldin is ancient. Not sure this is a great situation for Stevie, but at least he gets an upgrade in coaching and QB.

What are they doing? Honestly, they are giving Cam nothing to throw at and clearly teams are looking. They'll probably trade up today and take Hyde.

Love the move for the 9ers. Stevie knows his way around an NFL route tree. Good pick up for a team that could use WR help and price wasn't that high. Not a great spot for Stevie's fantasy value though.

As much as I have to question Carolina's plan, I fully expect them to add another WR in the next three rounds.

and the 49ers were dead last (by quite a bit actually) in passing attempts last year. With that many mouths to feed, gonna be slim pickings for Stevie this year.

I think this is a great deal for the Niners. I think Stevie Johnson's days were numbered as a solid fantasy wideout anyway, so I don't think this really has much of an impact.

It's an arms race in the NFC West.

Panthers couldn't afford the contract that Stevie has, even with the Bills taking a big chunk of it.

They are doing exactly what they need to, getting rookie playmakers and cheap veterans while the cap situation clears out. They did the exact same thing with Ted Ginn, Mike Mitchell, Dwan Edwards, Travelle Wharton, Geoff Hangartner, etc. last year...along with the rookie players who contributed immediately.

They could have restructured a contract to afford his $3.6M this year.

I can't say if this a good trade or not until I see the salary cap hits for both teams.
The Bills take a $8.5M cap hit.

The 49ers get him on a 3 year/$15M non-guaranteed deal.
Why is a 8.5 cap hit? Honest question. I know nothing about the salary cap and how it affects trades.

Spotrac has already updated the new deal.

Here's the latest I found on it:

http://inagist.com/all/464848939368202240/ Stevie Johnson would have counted $8.5 million against Bills cap this year. With dead money rolled in, his cap number now $10.225 million.

His signing bonus 2 years ago was $8.5, but 2/5s of it had been allocated out of any potential cap hit, right? The cap hit should only be $5.1m, then.

They also just gave him a $1.75M roster bonus.

Where's the dumpster? *Patton owner*
My first thought as well. Niners took the kid in the 4th despite a small-school pedigree so they've got to believe he's got some talent, but every move they've made since makes it seem like they want no part of him.

Hey, maybe they'll trade him to the Panthers!

He was already on thin ice on my roster as I've been assuming SF goes WR with a pick in round 2 or 3. Adding Stevie clinches it. Sure Boldin is getting old and Crabtree's contract will expire before long (may re-sign), but there were never any guarantees with Patton in the first place and using the roster spot for 1-2 more years in the event that maybe he'll be fantasy relevant is a waste. Too bad, I thought he was a pretty good prospect when I drafted him and SF has talked him up at times.

For the Bills, regardless of the cap hit it was addition by subtraction.
The cap hit is just for this season, correct?
It would have to be. Since he was traded, they can't designate him a post June 1 guy, right?
Yes and yes.

I wish Stevie the best. He was a total frustrating bonehead a lot of the time, but he was entertaining and fun to watch too. He has a lot of heart and always gave his best.

He got on the field last season and showed flashes. More than can be said about AJ Jenkins or Jon Baldwin in SF.

I think he's a victim of circumstance. SF is a smart organization. They saw an opportunity to get a quality player for cheap and they took it.

Nothing flashy about Boldin/Stevie, but they should be sufficient.

I think in a contract year, with his achilles injury now long in the rear view mirror, Crabtree comes back to being a big time receiver. Not positive how it will translate in fantasy, but I think he'll be very reliable for SF.

Also have to see what they do today in the draft to further asses the WR situation. Like to see them go after Lattimer, (Jacob Lattimer, ESU Timberwolves).

Stevie has had one of the highest target rates the last several years and is in the top 5 for drop rate. Fitzpatrick may not have been a great QB, but he targeted the heck out of Johnson. If anything, he's been a beneficiary of his circumstances.

I think he can be a great piece for SF, but he's not suddenly going to be putting up 1400 yards and 10+ TDs.

I didn't say he would. My post was about Patton.

Buffalo tried to make Stevie into a WR1. Reality is, he should be a complementary #2/#3 guy ala Houshmandzadeh. In that role, I think he's a good player and certainly better than anything the Niners were going to get in the 4th round of the draft. Nice pick up, IMO.

Nah, I don't think the Bills wanted Johnson grooming anyone...

The link to the actual interview is down now so it can't be heard in context but those are some very bad quotes to read.
