Update on Chiefs LT Roaf's retirement

KCFX Radio is reporting the talk from Chiefs camp in River Falls (Wis.) is that LT Willie Roaf, who just announced his retirement, just doesn't want to practice in the sweltering heat and might still be in uniform for the opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. Even Chiefs GM Carl Peterson is hedging his bets. "I do appreciate and respect that players who have played a long time don’t want to come to training camp. I know (former Chiefs offensive tackle and Pro Bowler) John Alt hated training camp, would hold out and wait and I finally had to buy him a big orthopedic bed because he complained about the dorms. Maybe that’s what I’ll need to do for Willie." The underrated Jordan Black will compete in Roaf's vacant LT spot until the dust settles. For the record, in 3 starts without Willie Roaf in the lineup last year, Larry Johnson averaged 5.3 yards/carry. He ran for 450 yards & 4 TDs in 3 consecutive Roaf-less games vs. Oakland, Buffalo, and Houston. We haven't penalized LaDainian Tomlinson (with LT Roman Oben's foot) or Shaun Alexander (with LG Steve Hutchinson's departure) for their concerns over one key lineman, so let's see what unfolds here

They may have been Roaf-less games, but they were also defense-less games, since those teams had the #25, #31 and #32 rushing defense.

Exactly...it really annoys me when people use statistics to minipulate reality.

that's what you're supposed to do against bad defenses...tear them up.

Look at the bright side aleast he didn't suck and have a 2.5ypc somthing like that. :bag: Its somthing they can build on. Maybe.?

As someone with LJ and Gonzo in my division, I'm hoping Roaf retires. Keep Gonzo in to block and take the running game down a notch. Particularly since I traded Gonzo for Shockey in the offseason :D :banned:

sweet trade! the Chiefs play some awful defenses this year, so LJ will certainly have his big games, with or without Roaf..

Maybe I'm missing something, but it sounds like Herm and the other decision makers are okay with Roaf "retring" for TC. If so, why not just put him on the PUP list and let him sit out?

:goodposting: I don't get it either. There have been tons of cases, where players sit out practice and only play during games. Why couldn't the Chiefs say Roaf isn't going to practice much because they want to avoid the wear and tear that cost him 5 games last year? It seems to me that based on the fact that he is 36 and missed 1/3 of last year, that it would have been easy to say they were going to rest him during training camp.

I scrolled down all of page 1 and didn't see any.Herm was on NFL Network talking as though he hopes Roaf just hates TC and comes back.
Herm also stated that he himself hasn't talked to Roaf - that most of what he knows is through the media & (paraphrasing) "a couple of others".

This is surprising. You are the head coach, and your best lineman is saying he wants to retire, and you don't even talk to him?

Roaf is probably ducking him. Tim Green wrote a book about life in the NFL and he talked about the lengths the vets would go to sit out of training camp. A guy of Roaf's stature can pull this stuff. Not many others would get to do this kind of stunt....
