Stop the presses... Chaz Schilens is healthy! (1 Viewer)

Okay, so I know this guy has been hyped and rehyped and then hyped again on these boards. But it's time to fire the coals again, boys. Schilens is back. This is a super late round pick that if healthy, is the only true #1 WR in Oakland right now. I'm high as can be on Jacoby, but he is an outstanding slot machine, return guy, match up nightmare, etc., but not a legit NFL WR1.

Last year, a glaring hole on this team was at WR1. DHB can't catch a cold and as much as I love Louis Murphy, his hands are pretty inconsistent. Murph is a WR2 at best for this reason. These guys are fast, but not dependable.

Schilens OTOH, has fantastic hands. He also has excellent size and before all the injuries the last couple years, he also had legit NFL speed. That last part is his only major question mark in my mind, other than the obvious health issue in general.

If Schilens is healthy, still fast and starting, he is easily a target for a breakout WR campaign in 2011 given how prolific this offense was last season and how much of a vacuum there is right now at WR1 on the roster.

Obviously, if the Raiders sign or trade for a big name WR this changes, but if not, watch for this guy this preseason. He could finally be the terrific value that so many have been projecting. I will be playing close attention to his burst off the LOS and in his breaks in preseason. If it's there, I may target him for my squad's WR3 role (with a reliable backup of course). As long as he's healthy and starting, I think he'll outpace most fantasy WR3's PPG output.

Why would you not even mention Ford? He's the play here.

First paragraph. I'm high on Ford, but in a totally different role than Schilens. Sorry for referring to him in first name only. I figured it was obvious since there aren't any other Jacobys on the Raiders WR corps. And frankly, I am higher on Ford than Schilens b/c of Ford's versatility (my league rewards returns) and Schilen's health concerns. But Chaz arguably has more upside as a potential true WR1 and can be had much much cheaper. Jacoby Ford is already on every sleeper list and will continue to be a fast riser on draft boards as the season approaches, while Chaz is a last round flier or waiver pluck.Think Miles Austin vs. Percy Harvin with these two. Both are effective fantasy WRs, but in different ways.

Sorry, I don't know why I missed it. Just read through too fast I guess. Tired today.

At one time I owned Schilens in five dynasty leagues, down to one now and I am not certain this news will keep me from cutting him there. I think the window of opportunity has passed for Schilens and unless Ford and Murphy both get injured, I don't see him getting another shot at starting.

I'd wait until at least the first preseason game if you've already waited this long. I love Murphy, but when healthy, Chaz is a better WR simply because he doesn't drop the ball. Murph has made some spectacular plays the last two years, but also has dropped a lot of key passes to extend drives. There is no other legit WR1 on the roster other than Schilens, so let's see what he's got to offer this year. I see Chaz and Ford starting if Schilens hasn't lost any speed/quickness and is able stay on the field this time.

I disagree.I'm telling you guys, he is the real deal. He's big, has great hands, good speed and runs great routes. There's nothing not to love about this guy....except he hasn't been able to stay on the field. No doubt, that's an issue. A major issue. But if he's healthy, and can stay healthy, he's the guy that makes everyone around him better. And that is exactly what Oakland needs at WR. Murphy, Ford, even Heyward-Bay all become better WR's (on the field, not necessarily for fantasy mind you) if a healthy Schillens is out there.I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he can stay healthy. If he does, I think a lot of people are going to be very surprised with the numbers he puts up. Especially if they resign Miller, who is an absolute beast over the middle.

I would argue he hasn't because he's always hurt. He's only played in like 8 games in 2 years. I've been holding for 2 1/2 years now, I'm crashing and burning with Chaz. :bag:

I have had him on and off in various dynasty leagues.. and when on the field... he looks good.. last time i saw him was when oak was in LA... I hope he stays healthy and could be a great stash or buy low candidate...

When does the QB get better?

I am not questioning his talent. But the WR position is as much as about opportunity as it is talent. Look at Brandon Lloyd, talent has always been there, but he failed on three teams before he got the right opportunity in Denver. Another example is Miles Austin - Jerry Jones raved about him when T.O. left (mentioned having Austin made T.O. expendable) but he still didn't get a shot at starting until Roy Williams was injured - in fact, he was below Crayton on the depth chart when the season started, despite outplaying him in training camp.I think Schilens has the talent, and even though I hope I am wrong, I just don't see the opportunity arising again with the Raiders - that time has passed IMO.

just not sure how someone can discount Jacoby Ford's playmaking ability by saying he's a "slot type" Did they say similar things about Steve Smith?

Not gonna hold my breath with Schilens. He's been so disappointing

Stop the presses... Chaz Schilens is healthy! Running fully healthy at opening of camp

Doesn't count until he is healthy Week One of the season - he has teased plenty of us before - and then been cut a few weeks into the season

Actually, if the news about Zach Miller leaving for Seattle is true, that would definitely put some air back in the deflated tires of the Schilens bandwagon. Miller was quite often relied upon as a possession receiver to move the chains - someone will have to pick up that slack and Schilens seems a pretty likely candidate.

It looks like Miller is going to re-sign in Oakland. That's great news. With Ford's injury, I think any concern over Schillens' time to shine as a Raider is no longer an issue.

I think a lot of you have misunderstood my stance regarding Ford and Schilens. My main point regarding the two is that they are complimentary talents. This is a case where the presence of each guy actually increases the other's chances of accumulating fantasy stats.

Schilens doesn't need to beat out Ford to be a starting WR and TD threat for the Raiders. He only needs to beat out DHB and Murphy.

I still like Murphy if he can be a bit more consistent. Guy makes some terrific plays and seems to be forgotten.

Miles Austin anyone?

Schilens has burned me so much I don't know if I can take it again, but better to burn me again that become a WR1 on someone else's roster (I cut Miles Austin on 3 teams after holding for years)

but saying that ... the play from mid-2012 on is Denarious Moore ... no link just an eye-test gut feeling ... you'll just have to trust me

Exactly. Everytime I see this thread on page 1 again I'm waiting for the 'Chaz Schilens Isnt healthy' update

(08-12) 00:14 PDT -- The Raiders were nicked up going into Thursday night's preseason opener and might have lost a couple of key reserve players: Backup safety Hiram Eugene dislocated a hip early in the third quarter and is expected to be out awhile - "that's a tough one," coach Hue Jackson said - and receiver Chaz Schilens hurt his knee on a second-quarter reverse and will be evaluated today.

Jackson was more optimistic about Schilens' injury. "He was walking around in the locker room, but we'll have to wait and make sure," he said.

On the play, Schilens was tackled for a 1-yard loss by Cardinals linebacker Joey Porter.

And as of a minute ago from Pro Football Talk...he's still injured.

The injury issues don’t end there. Safety Mike Mitchell hasn’t practiced in two weeks. Center Samson Satele was taken to the hospital Wednesday. Wideout Chaz Schilens is hurt once again. Wideout Jacoby Ford hasn’t returned yet from a broken hand.
