Strategy Question - Take a hit now for better future? (1 Viewer)

I am in a situation this weekend in 1 league, and it got me thinking and I wanted to see what others do here.

Have you guys ever "settled" for starting a player you know may do very little, even if you have better options on the wire, because you don't want to drop anyone with big upside?

I have that situation this weekend in a big division game. Our waivers are FCFS, so if i drop someone of value, he's gone in a matter of minutes. Gates is my starting TE on bye, so i have to play someone, and M Lewis is the only TE on my roster. But because of his long term prospects, i don't want to drop him to pickup a better starting healthy TE this weekend (like Wilcox with Heap hurting, Pollard, Franks, etc.)

So do you guys start a guy like Lewis, who you know may not score a single point this weekend in a big divisional game (i'm 0-2 so far), to make sure you don't give up good talent to others in your league?

For those curious, here is my roster-

Delhomme, Simms, Brooks, Brunell

Jackson, Portis, Jordan, T.Bell, Norwood, Betts

Boldin, S.Smith, Randy Moss, Santana Moss, Cotchery, Randle El, B.Marshall

Gates, M.Lewis

Akers

Panthers, Steelers

By the way, hard to believe this team in a 12 team league woudl be looking at 0-3 with a bad showing this week huh?

Just play Lewis. You never know the game vs Indy might be a shootout and Lewis my get some throws his way.

It's a nice team - especially going forward, but it's easy to see why its off to a bad start - Steve Smith hasn't played yet and the QB collection has been atrocious.

But, back to this week's question - I was agreeing with you about not wanting to drop Lewis and his future potential just to get a better one week option at TE - and then I saw your roster :bag:

1) What possible need do you have for Randle El? The whole team has been having problems, but aside from that, you would still have to guess when to play him - there just aren't more than one or two good games per season.

2) Aside from Randle El, what is either your short term or long term hope for Aaron Brooks? It is clear in just two weeks that the 2006 version of the Raiders are a total mess. Again are you going to try and guess when to play him instead of your other qbs?

Sorry, right church, wrong pew - go get someone who might help you win this week if Smith and Delhomme can improve - you have plenty of choices to throw off the bus.

well i thought Lewis was still really hurting and getting very limited plays. If he's starting i guess my situation looks like a no duh, but still wanted to get others thoughts when they have a truely tough decision with the waiver wire in a dynasty league...

i guess i didn't want to drop Randle El because so far, he seems to be a better #2 for the SKins than Lloyd (who has done absolutely nothing so far) I had thought about dropping Brooks by the way...

I'm in a keeper league and the more I play, the more I think "win now - win now - win now - there is no tomorrow"

I slacked off on my QB last week (Delhomme) because I didn't want to go for something better and thought I had an easy game = lost by one point.

If you're holding on to a #2 WR on a team that rarely throws, you're holding on to a popcorn fart. Be it Vincent Jackson, Mark Clayton or Michael Jenkins. Waiting on future WR studs is a HUGE crapshoot and to me doesn't seem like a sound move.

RBs are different though - the same rules don't apply. Waiting on an Addai, Lendale White, Michael Turner or Jerious Norwood may pay huge dividends this year as well as the future.
