Strategy Question (1 Viewer)

When I draft, I usually get as many starters as i can. I look for starting RBs (as opposed to Barber or Maroney types), #1 WRs (no matter the team - #2s must be special; Wayne, TJ..etc). In other words, I go for depth, not handcuffs or potential down the line. I would rather have 5 starting RBs than take a chance that Turner or Maroney will get the chance later on. Helps during bye weeks to have lots to choose from. When the byes are over, or like now, close to over, I still have great depth.

My question is this: Is it better to hold on to the depth or try and bunch some guys together for bigger studs (2 or 3 for 1) and by doing so "put all my eggs in one basket", or go on with depth and play matchups, but leave good players sitting every week.

I would try a 2 for 1 deal and then fill your roster spot with a handcuff.Just last week I traded my #5 RB (Wally Lundy) and Chad Johnson for Torry Holt. Earlier in the season I traded Maroney and Reggie Williams for Anquan Boldin. We start three receivers and I have Steve Smith, Holt and Boldin. And I still have Portis, T.Bell, A.Green and T.Henry for RB. Hoping to fill my empty roster spot with M.Bell.

early in the season, i try to stockpile talent, period. i tend to draft based on who i think will have the best *opportunities* regardless of whether or not they're starting. case in point, i avoided all Houston RBs. i didn't even want the starter. while others were picking up Morency and Lundy (who i still think will sht the bed), i was scooping up the TJ Housh and Terry Glenns of the world.

having said that, i get as much depth as possible early in the season, and around now (when bye weeks are history and the playoff push hits overdrive), i start packaging for high-end talent. i don't think Lundy will be winning anyone a championship, but if you can package him with a Marion Barber and score a Kevin Jones, you'll have a better chance of sipping Cristal in January.

my opinion, of course.

Housh was drafted in the 5th and Glen in 6th in my 10 teamer. They were the 15th and 17th wrs drafted. You are telling me the owners in your leagues owners were drafting Morency and Lundy at this time. On the other hand, its not as crazy as suggesting that one could land a top 5 RB to this point in KJ for a handcuff and and a rookie rb with a couple decent games.

i'd rather not risk a petty back-and-forth over semantics like in the Colston thread, so i'll only answer this once. KJones was merely an example of a top talent back who may help you win a championship. i didn't mean to mislead anyone into thinking i gave considerable thought to the trade example i made before.having said that yes, in at least one of my leagues, Lundy was going around the time i took Glenn and TJ. that owner is probably a FBG subscriber also, and choked on the hype hook.these are only examples, for christ sake. the meat-and-potatoes of my post was that i'd be packaging talent now for studs, because that's what wins championships. the Lundy's and Barbers do not.

An often overlooked point is to make sure you get guys who will be playng the playoff weeks. I grabbed Benson off waivers before this week, because I think he's liekly to play a lot once the Bears lock things up, and they are a very RB-friendly team.

You want performers for the playoffs, however they come, and sometimes a handcuff player makes sense.
