Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (26 Viewers)

under the banner of heaven on Hulu, 3 episodes in and so far it’s been a good drama based on real events. Andrew Garfield is the lead actor and it also has Sam Worthington, Gil Birmingham and one of the Culkins.

A devout detective's faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder seemingly connected to an esteemed Utah family's spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government.
Earlier in this thread krista called this show laughably bad, which made me second guess myself because of her typically rock solid opinions. But I really liked this series, too.

Terminal List - Its gotten terrible reviews, but I've enjoyed it. You obviously have to put aside your critical thinking hat a bit. But watching Chris Pratt and Riggins do badass things in and around Northern California and Mexico is pretty fun. It could use a little humor once in a while. But otherwise, so far (I'm 6 episodes in), its been good.
The reviews seem to be more about outside concerns than the actual show hence the huge divide between critical reviews and regular folks.

Along with Shining Girls (Apple), we've been watching The War of the Worlds S2 (Epix- the wife forgot to sign off of the free week, so on we go). Even though I wasn't loving the direction the "aliens" went and like a lot of sci-fi has some huh? moments, it's been done pretty well and we're enjoying it/looking forward to the next episode.

I am absolutely loving this one. Started it like two days ago and I'm already up to the finale.  The weird stuff might be off-putting to people who maybe don't think that sort of stuff belongs in a crime mystery drama type show, but otherwise it's been excellent so far.

Mr krista and I might be the minority here.  Despite not enjoying the last couple episodes (but did like the first few), I do think the acting was really solid throughout, so at least we might agree on that.

Just finished ep6 of The Bear.

Have quite a bit of restaurant experience in my younger days. The first couple eps I felt like I just worked a 12 hour shift constantly in the weeds. WoW!

And now I get the "ketchup on dogs" jokes that have been circulating.

Wrapping it up tomorrow and then moving on to The Old Man (we just got Hulu back).

Anyone else watch The Wheel of Time on Prime? We're three episodes in and impressed so far. It's Lord of the Rings type fantasy/action.
I found it enjoyable enough, but I never really read the books. My low bar for fantasy TV is probably the Shannara stuff, and this is definitely better than that.

binging a lot of K-Dramas in general lately

Hospital + Playlist (2 seasons) - recommend if you think Grey’s is a good show

Vincenzo - 20 episodes....did you like The Sopranos? Goodfellas? Godfather I & Is? Good, you should..This is about a Korean Italian consigliere of the Mafia visiting his birth country. It probably seemed like a good idea.

Itaewon Class (1 season, 16 episodes, Netflix)

Good character development & plot driven. My one compliant about K-drama is often characters are flat. They do a good job filling in backstory through flashbacks. Every episode has a hype ending that leaves you wanting to fire up the next one. Just finished e9.

Found this on Reddit & it’s spot on:

Itaewon Class has a lot of things most dramas don’t have-

1.    diversity and representation - LBTQ+ and different races (this is the first K-drama to have an American cast member)
2.    Parents that support their kids
3.    Moral codes
4.    Good acting
5.    Good female characters- Four hardworking female executives, out of which one is a sociopath, one is a trans woman, one is an older woman, one is a younger woman
6.    Though driven by revenge you never think that the hero stoops down to the level of the villain(s) The villains(s) are humanized somewhat and have actual reasons for their actions
7.     Itaewon Class has a cohesive plot- it’s a bullied kid’s revenge, two orphans work hard to make it in the restaurant industry on opposite sides, an ex con figures out his life has value, etc
8.    There’s a lot of themes that are explored-power, money, family, love, race, bullying, sexuality, etc.
9.    The main character is someone I identify with- it’s rare to find someone that means what they say
10.    The female lead is not a Mary Sue nor a damsel in distress
11.    Neither of the female leads need to be rescued- they both make their own choices and save themselves
12.    None of the characters are perfect-they are all flawed

Move to Heaven

It’s about a trauma cleaning company. One of the cleaners is on the spectrum. They’re hired to clean out the belongings of the deceased. Not a police drama - in one episode it’s a crime scene - but there is usually a mystery to solve. The belongings they find tell the story.

Netflix, 1s, 10e

(Korean w/ subtitles or English overdub)
You guys sensing a pattern here?

Very new KDrama (debuted June 29) which has been setting ratings records in ROK.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo

We’re up to 6 episodes, it’s brilliant. The lead character is a rookie attorney with autism (IQ 164), encyclopedic knowledge of whales, started memorizing law textbooks as a child.

Feel good comedy with occasional moral dilemma.

I think there’s a separate thread on this. Reaction seemed to be mixed. I thought it was OK.
Not the best, but decent enough that I’ll watch more. I never read the books either but hopefully it will pick up. The younger characters are the weaker part of the show. Kind of like Hayden Christensen versus Ewan McGregor.

It took me a minute to get past seeing Lip ( :bag: ) without the rest of the gallaghers but the season was awesome. His brother had such a small amount of screen time but (not naming) he is one of my favorite actors and completely makes his screen time memorable. in fact i’d say he is one of the best supporting actors of the last 10 years.

Mrs Keerock and I thought it was awful.  So painfully slow.  Acting was good though.

Loved this but I've devoured every book Jack Carr has written in the series so I'm biased. I will say they made this as realistic as possible given the unrealistic plot. Many retired SEALs in the show as well as on the set consulting. The series is about as true to the book as it can be. Big fan, hope they do them all. So far 5 books.

Enjoy the thread if you are so inclined https://forums.footballguys.com/topic/799759-the-wheel-of-time-on-amazon/

I watched it while starting the book series. It's cool to see characters take life but as close as Terminal List came to reproducing the book for film, I don't think Wheel of Time did. That said, if you're just watching, it makes total sense, flows well and was done pretty well cinematically.

The Bear could possibly be the best series I've seen this year.

We have two episodes to go and love it.  Makes me nostalgic for Chicago, and the characters are fantastic.

They are clearly setting this up to be "Mr. Beef" on Orleans St., since they showed the Green Door Tavern, which is next door to Mr. Beef, going out of business.  (It has not, thank goodness.)  My first home purchase in Chicago was exactly two blocks east, so I am especially loving all the River North stuff.  We didn't have drive-by shootings in that neighborhood, though.  :lmao:    There are a lot of little things like that that a Chicagoan will know aren't accurate (another example:  driving an hour to get caulk when there's an Ace Hardware about six blocks directly south and a Home Depot a mile or two NW), but who cares.  It's like a love letter to Chicago in a way, and I   that.

I loved Itaewon Class. I heard good things about "Thirty Nine" but it might be too traditional K-RomCom-y for me.

Just watched episode 7.  Felt so stressed and realized it was all one shot?!?  Mr. krista said it was beautiful filmmaking but he thought he was going to have a heart attack.  Created a sense of urgency and absolute despair.

Saw it in this thread pages ago and haven't been able to find it yet - who in here uses JustWatch or TV Time apps to keep track of their shows?  Trying to figure out how to best use them and need a little guidance.  So far all they seem to do is let you mark everything as seen/unseen and like/dislike...and that's about as far as the Youtube walkthroughs take you also.  When does it start actually helping me?  I'm 99% sure I'm just using it wrong
I use the watchlist to keep track of shows/movies I want to watch. Other than that only use it to see what streaming service a show/movie is on.

Looking forward to your thoughts after the last episode. I loved it.

I started watching and got through about 1.5 episodes and just started losing interest. Not exactly sure why...think I just got bored by the losing his memory slog?  I just know once I start playing on my phone during a show, it's over.   Was everyone else who loves this enthralled from the start or does it get better and I should stick with it?

You made it farther then I did. I slogged through the 1st episode and  realized it wasn't for me.

7 seemed like it was over so quick we raced right into 8. Great show all the way through. My one wish was that there were more flashbacks to when Carmy was working in the top notch restaurant with a seeming military assembly of chefs waiting for orders.

was anybody else actually enthralled and loved from the start?

we're... hell- I don't even know how many eps in- they all feel the same. I guess pacing is just off, and the consistent (not interesting) flashbacks of is this real or not aren't helping.

I think that was partly it. Felt all over the place and zero flow. Boring scenes into random flashbacks into overly long gun battles who I have no idea who the good guys and bad guys are.

I'm 3 episodes in. Definitely not "enthralled," though I'm intrigued enough to continue at this point. Sucker for stories featuring unreliable narrators, so interested to see where this ends up. Not in any super rush to finish, so I guess that means I'm still a bit on the fence.

Saw The Gray Man in the theater today (it streams on Netflix next weekend). I really liked it. It’s got a Bourne Identity vibe to it. Lots of guns and fight scenes with a few jokes mixed in. Several household names in the movie (Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, etc).

Definitely recommend it.

Watched the latest Dave Chapelle special on Netflix where he’s giving a speech at the Duke Ellington School of Arts.

It’s hard not to come away from the special and think he’s a huge, pompous doushbag. Sure, he’s funny but show some humility, guy.

How to Build a Sex Room

One part HGTV style home makeover, one part sex/kink exploration.  It's an interesting show. Some folks are trying to rekindle the spark in their relationship, while others are into some pretty twisted stuff.

Oh, watched it the same night, but drunkenly.  Wish I'd noticed your post earlier, because Mr. krista had a fantastic The Bear rant this morning that I've now forgotten.  He'd read some other chef saying it "wasn't realistic" and went on a rant about how of course it wasn't entirely realistic, because no one wants to watch two hours of someone chopping parsley, but that it was still the closest to a real restaurant he'd ever seen portrayed.  Something about how the only other situation with people in close quarters with such pathos would be in prison.  He's still having nightmares/PTSD about episode five with the tickets coming out non-stop.

We both loved it.  Can't wait for another season and hope they can keep it up.

Thanks for the rec on The Bear. Not sure if it's something I would have watched but loving it after 2 episodes.

I somehow never paid any attention to talk about The White Lotus, but my wife wanted to watch it after seeing all the Emmy nominations and reading good things about it.  Just finished the chore of watching it and looked back on this thread to find mostly good things being said.  I don't get it, but I guess it just wasn't my cup of tea.  At all.  We didn't like the first couple of episodes but thought it must get better, so watched a couple more, and then only finished because we had gotten that far.

agree with this. Great show. Best thing I've seen in a long time.

Mare of Easttown. If I knew it was a detective in small town show wouldn't have bothered. quit after 2 episodes.

I'd say give it a chance but I'm biased so take it with a grain of salt. The plot advances and does come together but it is a little choppy at first. I'd say episode 3 on it starts to become more followable and eventually makes sense in the end. I wasn't a fan of the memory thing but I don't know how else they would portray it either so I have no solution for that.

I'll watch it but man the casting is sooooo far off from the books, which I am a huge fan of, so not sure how good it will be.

I thought Mare of Easttown was pretty good although a bit too similar to Broadchurch, which was better, imo.

I am in the same boat. Had a couple chuckle moments but overall it was just kind of meh.  Might be expectations as it was supposed to be great but just didn't do anything for me.

Totally agree. Thought it was incredibly stupid and basically went nowhere. Pretty much every character was a completely horrible person, which I GUESS was the point?

I just have no idea what it was trying to be.  It wasn't particularly funny.  You had nobody to root for. Yeah, the ending was a twist because the character that died wasn't who they hinted at in the first scene...but who cares?

Just complete meh for me.
