I ended up enjoying season 2 of White Lotus. The finale was a letdown. Not bad, just not very satisfying. I'm definitely down for a third season though.

White Lotus is the sort of show that's a lot more fun if you just look at it as a guilty pleasure, like a soap opera for literate people. It has some interesting characters placed in interesting situations. A very large percentage of those situations are full-on cringe, which I really enjoy. Every little thing doesn't have to make sense, and every little plot line doesn't need to be resolved in the most logical manner. Every character gets their own arc, and obvious plot holes are kept to a bare minimum. That makes it better than most shows on television. It's a solid B+ in a world where there's just no excuse to waste your time on anything below a B.
I maintain that this is in large point the point of the show.
You may very well be right about that. But it doesn't make for the best viewing.

I would like to have seen more of a payoff to the grandson's story. I'm sure all of us saw that he was being scammed over the second half of the season, and that could have gone in a bunch of different directions. On the tragic side, maybe it's devastating for him to learn that the hooker isn't actually that into him. He's kind of innocent that way. Or maybe the other men in his life intervene in a helpful direction for once. Or maybe this experience drives him toward the same misogyny that he's grown up around. And so on. Instead, the finale reveals that he pretty much knows that he's being taken for a ride, and his dad knows it too, but they end up being like "Eh, just give her the 50 large" and then nobody does any more than shrug their shoulders when she runs off.

If the point is to show that $50K is NBD to these people, okay I guess that's fine. But that's a pretty anticlimactic payoff. We knew they were rich already because they travelled to the Sicily White Lotus and it was the other characters who were selling their bodies for money. This plot point was resolved in the first 10 minutes of the first episode.

I could make a similar argument about those two couples. I get that the "did they or didn't they?" style of storytelling is being done to make a point about the nature of uncertainty in a relationship and how we choose to manage it. But that's not very exciting. They gave us a crazy story involving sex-starved wives, a husband with an internet porn problem, a DudeBro who's raising his wife's trainer's kids, and a three way with DudeBro and the two hookers. That kind of story needs a real payoff, not a beard-stroking meditation on jealousy culled from black-and-white French cinema.

In other words, I feel like this show switched genres a bit in E7 and only in E7. The first six episodes were Melrose Place For HBO Viewers and then the last episode decided to be try to be subtle/profound. It's a little disconsonant IMO. (Edit: To reiterate, I'm not saying that the finale was bad. It just could have been better.)

About the grandson. I really liked the way that played out. We got glimpses of him being an entitled **** in various convos with the dad and grandpa (F Murray Abraham slayed in that role) throughout the series.

The kid completely sold out his ideals for the money in the convo with his dad about helping reconcile with the mom if he paid him the money. He then was ogling the hottie with his dad and grandpa in the airport. Bonus convo with the vapid nitwit assistant when they exchanged info right after she discovered the likely death of her boss that she shrugged off in like 2 seconds.

I was thrown off a bit by the finale but mostly because the build up was so excellent and was thinking the blowout with the couples was going to be more of a payoff. Would have liked to have seen more come out there but instead it was the gays.

Thought that was pretty nicely and subtlety closed up.

I see the unanswered questions as being totally consistent with the main theme of the show across 2 seasons. Rich people at White Lotus resorts party and don't care about the locals, don't suffer any consequences for their actions and in general don't care about things most normal people care about. I think the ending was exactly the same as last time - folks finishing up their week and getting back on the plane with not a care in the world. Agree that its not a typical ending that ties everything up but I do think that's kind of the point.

@krista4 and whoever hasn't finished the season IGNORE THE BELOW; SPOILERS ABOUND:

I get everything your saying. But I reiterate the point that the bold is the point! It's supposed to be anticlimactic because it's a commentary that for the rich, in contrast to us 99%ers whereby these issues would be huge deals for us, they just aren't for them. So, the payoff is that there isn't one and, if anything, the joke is on us for thinking there should be one. Because with the uber-wealthy, normal rules, social norms, and expectations don't apply.

My favorite thing about this show is that it doesn't pander to traditional storytelling while remaining interesting - which is a significant feat given that traditional storytelling is a tried and true formula.

Well, I'm going to need a new show after White Lotus 2. I'm through episode 5 and can't remember being this excited to put the kids to bed and turn on a new episode. Looking for some recs - feel free to post 'em. If it's got super natural, monsters, ghosts, make believe, I'm out. Dark comedy/drama right in my wheelhouse.
Have you seen Fleabag and/or Catastrophe? Both on Prime.

Also, Three Pines was entertaining enough for a dark drama (also on Prime).

It is Christmas week.. Watched Home Alone, Elf, Christmas with the Kranks, Christmas Vacation, Santa Clause 1 & 2(3 doesn't exist).. Polar express.. The Christmas chronicles on Netfix are fun. Also watched old time classics Frosty, Rudolph, Santa clause, Charlie Brown.

Not to mention "non-traditional" Christmas movies Die hard and Gemlins.
All that's left is It's a wonderful life

Good list. Add Krampus (2015 film), Klaus, Garfield Christmas, and A Very Murray Christmas.

I enjoy Noelle. But I enjoy most movies with Anna Kendrick. She's quite nice.

You must have missed my post in the other movie thread where I mentioned that movie does nothing for me. I've given it 3 chances, no go

By the way forgot my other favorite, Scrooged with Bill Murray, and the 1951 Christmas Carol.

Yeah I didn’t see that. Shocking. Best Xmas movie by miles for me. The one I am dreading is Elf. I find this one painful.

The Recruit (trailer). New 8 episode Netflix spy show that dropped on 12/26.

Not as quirky as Patriot or as dramatic as Homeland or as action packed as Terminal List but it has been enjoyable so far.

It isn't really a "must watch" but if you are looking for something new or just like the genre it is entertaining. It has some fun poking fun at the CIA.

eta: saw a description elsewhere that was pretty accurate: Chuck meets Archer meets Workaholics
Also enjoying it. Just finished ep3 which I think was the best of the three. Will definitely continue.

Well explained, and that's what I disliked about season 1. I don't think stories about rich people are any more interesting than stories about middle income people or people who are struggling economically. That puts me at odds with a lot of America, which doesn't have royalty and substitutes rich people or celebrities to fill that role.

I'll still probably watch season 2 since my wife liked the diversion of season 1. But it won't be for the show, it'll be for the "hey I found something you'll probably like" payoff.

Fleabag is one of the best shows I can think of. @General Malaise, if you haven’t watched that yet, jump on it.

Your make believe caveat - does Groundhog Day rules pass your test? If so, you could try Russian Doll on Netflix.

For anyone looking to expand your xmas watch list I recommend two; one is a Finnish Santa mythos movie called Rare Exports . Its a different take on the man, the myth, the legend. Kept my interest throughout. The other is A Christmas Horror Story. It's a four part anthology set in a town with William Shatner as a local DJ/Narrator. Ends on a nice note. Neither is a typical warm and fuzzies movie but enjoyable in a Krampus sort of way.

We’re two in and enjoying this, thanks.

Jack Ryan on prime is a fun show

It's a very rah rah america rhetoric though

I guess you could say it's true to the way Clancy books are written
I started it yesterday and got through 3 episodes. There hasn't been much 'Murica rhetoric yet other than the 3 letter agencies doing 3 letter agency things to interfere with foreign nations. The European scenery is outstanding. They began production in May 2021 so it is interesting to see how their version of Russia aggression lines up with what actually happened a year later. I look forward to finishing it over the weekend.

* At least this time they are sticking with an historically accurate plot compared to last season when they switched the real life socialist dictatorship of Venezuela into a right wing conservative dictatorship
Maybe it's just me but I'd like to hear from the perspective within a place like Afghanistan or Iraq. (That's not US centric)

BTW any of you have sons or daughters in college

Hulu is offering a deal package w showtime and Disney plus for 2.99 a month

Rare Exports is great. Especially if you’ve ever wanted to know what Santa’s dong looks like.

Reservation Dogs is great, watch it (Hulu).

Thoughts on White Lotus season 2:

I am with those who liked the ending despite its ambiguity. If you are looking for a show that has clearly linear plots and unambiguous consequences and conclusions, this is not it, by design. The point is that the ultra-rich for the most part can just shrug off things that would be devastating or life-changing for the rest of us. The point of the Ethan/Cameron/Harper plot IMO was to show us how Ethan and Harper learn to embrace that, just as Cameron and Daphne have. In some ways it parallels the Rachel/Shane plot from season 1. And IMO part of the point of Albie storyline is to show how he is developing his father and grandfather's awful traits, even if he presents them in a different way. His indifference to being played by Lucia is part of his learning how to shrug things off. I did like how he and Portia reconnected at the end and vowed to keep in touch -- who knows if they will have a relationship, but it's clear that they both need something more "boring and predictable" than the "excitement" they went through with the people they paired up with during the course of the show. I also liked how we never really learned whether there really was a plot against Tanya -- everything shown to us suggested it was plausible, but leaving open the possibility that her actions were all for nothing was a good choice. (Leaving Matteo behind in Palermo and having Hugo escape the boat allows Mike White to come back to this question in S3 if desired; given that it would allow him to use Jennifer Coolidge in flashbacks, he might.) And for those who prefer some good resolutions for the underdogs (the underclass in this series), here they for the most part fared better than in S1. Lucia and Mia got what they wanted and Valentina got to find out more about who she really is and to begin the process of becoming comfortable with it. Giuseppi got screwed over but he was shown to be a sexist pig so it's not as devastating to us as what happened to some of the underclass in S1.

Klaus, on Netflix, is a new animated Christmas movie I liked. Also watched Guillermo del Toro’s animated Pinocchio on Netflix and it was good, not great, but a good version of the story.

Edit to clarify Klaus from 2019. I just discovered it.

Tried to watch Collide tonight on Hulu. Has Ryan Philippe and Jim Gaffigan in it. Couldn't get past the first 30 minutes. Just unbelievably horrific. Each scene was worse than the last. Just don't understand how this movie was made or how they got a couple big names to be in it.

On the other hand, Barney's Version was great. From 2010. Had never heard of it. Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, Rosamund Pike. Would recommend.

If you enjoy Will Ferrell, Spirited on Apple TV+ is quite good. I guess you’d call it a Christmas musical comedy.
Ferrell and Reynolds are two of my favorites but I couldn't get past fifteen minutes
If it had half the musical bits, it would probably be better. Good afternoon
Yeah, I tapped out when the assistant was singing about doing the background info on the kid. Ended up switching to Murderville Christmas special with Bateman and Maya Rudolph. Will probably check out the rest of that series now.

Just started “The Watcher“ very Chrirtmasy!

Three episodes in and we are liking. Not too many cheap jump scares, just creepy so far.

There really aren’t enough hours in the day to watch all of the fantastic shows that are out there (and continue to be produced). Not a complaint though - we live in wonderful times.

pretty sure I've knocked all the good ones out and given almost everything a try (sans Hulu series)
