Chernobyl was so terrific, just about perfect(ly horrifying.)
GOT is probably my favorite show ever. When I heard it was in development at HBO I thought there was no way they could adapt it successfully.
Peaky Blinders over the top and stylized but very fun.
Stranger Things is fun, great for me cause my kids would watch it with us. Loved the last season, had a great cinematic feel.
Vikings good (at least the first few seasons,) but as mentioned above I enjoyed Last Kingdom as much or perhaps more.
Fargo I loved seasons 1-2, didn't love the rest.
Last of Us I enjoyed, solid show.

Past Lives

in theaters now, coming to Apple+ soon

Really good film

Wow, that trailer is really good and the reviews of this are amazing.

Might not stream until next month? I just realized it was a limited release.

Past Lives is releasing in limited US theaters on Friday, June 2; mostly New York and Los Angeles. It is then expanding to more areas on June 9 before going nationwide on June 23.

(turns out Week 1 was only Manhattan - not Brooklyn - Austin, Boston, Chicago, L.A., SF, Toronto, and D.C.)

We were going to go into the city to see it earlier in the week but the air quality index was over 400 (Canadian wildfires) so we passed - it was only playing in Manhattan last week. Then yesterday morning I realized it was playing at the theater closest to us + at BAM Rose Cinema, and I remembered I had free passes the VA gave me for the latter.

But it honestly would have been worth $16 a ticket. One of the best films I have seen in years.

The TDF series on Netflix “Unchained” is excellent. It’s exactly like their F1 show - great entertainment for a casual fan of the sport. Through 3 episodes they’ve gotten through about 8 race stages and done a good job creating great storylines and drama even for those who know how it ends. They give a glimpse into the strategies but no team is really showing their cards to the camera just as with the F1 show.

Big fan of Florida Man. It’s not high art but I really enjoyed it for a one off (but maybe a next season?). And the actress who plays Delly… wow.

Help me pick a couple of shows to binge this summer, what 1-2 should I watch first?

Narcos (watched season 1 years ago)
Game of Thrones
Chernobyl
Unlike someone else who replied, I did not enjoy Narcos Mexico at all, I don't think I finished it. But I thought Narcos was great once we got into the Pablo storyline, and the Cali cartel was pretty decent as well. Game of Thrones you have to watch just because the first 3 or 4 seasons were some of the best TV ever created. Chernobyl was a good watch, but the good folks at the internet tell me it wasn't really all that accurate.

Saw A Man Called Otto over the weekend on Netflix. Enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. The female lead was very good.

My wife was balling...agree it was better than expected, but my expectations were low.
I'm going to assume you mean she was bawling, unless Tom Hanks really does it for her.
There were a few scenes were I had to stop the movie it was getting to me. There was also a scene where I don’t remember laughing so hard.

pretty good

the original Swedish film (A Man Called Ove 2015) was awesome as well, was an Academy Award nominee in the foreign language category - looks like Prime is streaming it, saw it years ago in a theater
If you haven't read the book yet, make sure you do. It's great and definitely the funniest book I've ever read.
Did you ever read Hitchhiker's Guide?

Chimp Empire is best thing I’ve seen on Netflix in awhile. Documentary directed by James Reed of My Octopus Teacher, and narrated by Mahershala Ali. Brilliant cinematography, and treats the power struggles and territorial disputes like stuff out of Succession or Game of Thrones.

If you like nature documentaries, definitely worth a watch.
Best documentary I've ever seen. Stunning and powerful.
I might need to check this out. More of a big cat guy (Eternal Enemies and Eye of the Leopard) and kinda hate primates, but sounds promising.

chernobyl is a amazing, narcos mexico is not for everyone but it’s so true to what happened in real life that imo it’s the best of them all. different strokes for different folks.

The Last of Us
Stranger Things (watched season 1 years ago)
Friday Night Lights
Vikings
Ozark (watched season 1-2 years ago)
Psych
Leftovers (watched season 1 years ago)
The Righteous Gemstones

They are listed in order of IMDB ranking. Off the top of my head I am thinking Last of Us, Psych, maybe FNL. If you could rewatch one for the first time which would you pick? TIA
Psych really isn't getting any love. I thought the show was outstanding for what it is. It's kind of cheesy at times but the banter between Shawn and Gus is hilarious. It's a show you can throw on and kill and hour or two and be ok moving on to something else so it won't kill your entire day. Thought I had to speak up for Psych. One of my favorite mindless shows

Recommend (in order):
Chernobyl (very quick watch but well worth it)
Ozark
Psych
Stranger Things
Friday Night Lights

I haven't seen any of the others.

Just throwing out The Good Place for a fun, funny, and at times touching show. Extremely underrated imo.

the fist 4 seasons of GOT is way better than anything else on that list (other than Chernobyl, which you can crush in a couple of nights).

For anime fans - cyberpunk on netflix is great (prequel to video game)

also mrs davis on peacock is great (comedy)

Episode 2 of The Idol on HBO Max was as depraved and slow moving as the first. I still think I'm in for the duration because I'm curious if anything is going to eventually happen to these horrible people. It helps a little to view it as a comedy.

I need to see Fargo......I loved the movie. Need to know where I can stream this series. Same for Friday Night Lights.

The ones I bolded.....watched and loved all those. In order of how I would watch them:

Chernobyl - One season (it is a mini-series). Stunning, tense. Amazingly acted.

Stranger Things - Season 1,3 and 4 are outstanding. 2 was.....ok A great fun time and relive your childhood in the mid 80’s. Nice change after Chernobyl.

The Last of Us - Outstanding adaption of one of the best video games I have ever played. Only one season. Seasons 2 and 3 are forth coming based on the second game.

Ozark - Man......this series is just whacked and so evil. Bateman is brilliant. All the acting is to be frank. Tremendous series.

Vikings - The First 3 seasons are pure epic.....and it does continue to the end....well worth the watch. The Last Kingdom is even better though for my money.

Game of Thrones - First 6 seasons maybe the best fantasy series I have ever seen.

Peaky Blinders - We loved it....we cannot wait for the movie to wrap it all up.....seasons 1 and 2 are insane.

It’s definitely been Disney-fied, but Flamin’ Hot on Disney+ was an enjoyable watch. Story of the Frito-Lay janitor who came up with the flamin’ hot chip idea.

Somebody Somewhere (HBO, HBOMax, MAX whatever you want to call it.)
2 Seasons. 14 Total Episodes

The show stars Bridget Everett who might be most famous for her episode of Comedians in Cars getting Coffee with Jerry Seinfeld.
This has an outstanding cast. It's some funny, it's some dark, it's fun, it's sad. In short it has a lot of real life themes.
I don't go out of my way to watch LGBTQ material, but I don't go out of my way to avoid it either, so if that sort of thing is important to you to watch or avoid, it's all in there.

Nothing about the storyline is terribly memorable, but man,......the characters are so rich and memorable. I would watch it again, just to watch the actors who were great portraying the characters that were great if that makes sense.

I feel like there is a good case study to be written explaining what motivated HBO to rebrand themselves like this. HBO had a really strong brand that was known for (a) movies and (b) prestige television. And you tossed that overboard for a corporate handle that reminds people of soft-core porn airing at 2:00 am? Really?

Hey now, late night Cinemax was partially responsible for bringing a generation of boys into manhood.

I'm halfway through The Days on Netflix about Fukushima. It's not bad but it's no Chernobyl. Kinda cheesy at times.
Someone earlier mentioned watching the dubbed version because it wasn't bad but I disagree. If you're ok with subtitles, I would probably do that.
I started with the dubbed version and will stay with it because the wife prefers it to subtitles but the dubs sound too American. Some of the voices used for the younger guys sound like California surfers. And I'm not sure how accurate the translations are with some clearly American terminology like "Yo, what's up?" Most of the older guys are ok though.
It doesn't help that I finished four episodes and the main disaster hasn't even happened yet. The initial earthquake and tsunami are in the first episode but since then, it's all about plans to prevent the disaster with a lot of long lingering looks while various people contemplate what to do. Not a lot of sense of urgency in many scenes and a surprising lack of tension. This easily could have been 6 episodes instead of 8.

I watched ep1 with the English dubs and it ruined it for me. What you said above (bolded) sums it up quite well. If I tried again, which I won't likely, I'd go with captions. Chernobyl was infinitely better.

I seem to be reliving this same experience groundhog-day style, but for me it was great season 1 (like, top 5 show for me in 2022) and then I just couldn't get past the second episode in season 2.

THIS is a great assessment. I am 4 episodes of dubbed version in on it, and I will finish it. I felt just like you have presented!

Barbecue Showdown - 8/10. Watched the first season of Barbecue Showdown on Netflix. Was very pleasantly surprised. It's a Barbecue competition done similar style to like Survivor or American Idol where they start with 8 contestants, have a daily cooking contest, and eliminate one person. The contestants were all genuinely really nice, likeable people (I was surprised that the more fun personalities were eliminated early and the show remained fun) and it is the near-perfect show to have on in the background when you're working from home, trying to wind down to fall asleep, etc.

Ciao House on Food Network/Discovery+ was kind of like this except with Italian food. In some episodes it really was like Survivor because the losing team voted one of their members out of the competition. In other episodes, the judges did the elimination.

I am on episode 5 and we always watch the native language with subtitles. Non negotiable in our home of Todem.

Makes for a far better experience.

It is no Cherynobl…..but it is pretty intense. The dubbing would kill that for me.

This is probably the first time I went with dubbed because someone previously said it wasn't bad.
I don't think I'd find it intense even with subtitles though but I'm only getting to episode 5 which I assume will ramp it up.

Baptiste is a very good 2-season series. Each season is about finding a missing person, and the toll that trying yp find them takes on the people involved. Really enjoyed it.
Baptiste is a spin-off of a show called The Missing (which is really good). Baptiste is the main character for both seasons.

Not to ruin it for you, but, the entire story is basically a lie.

Very interesting. They do cover some of this in the movie - soeciyically, there was already a Frito-Lay R&D team already developing and testing a spicy version of their chips and that is discussed in the film. Also, I don’t recall the movie crediting him with coming up with the “Flamin’ Hot”name which, according to the article had already been trademarked by the Company. BUT what the story does credit him with is working with his wife to come up with the recipe that would ultimately be used in developing the products, and jump starting the product marketing within the Hispanic community. Seems that this aspect may very well be urban legend.

My guess is that after the LAT article came out in 2021 calling BS, the story for the movie changed as well to try to get away from his more easily disproveable claims.

He’s made a nice living for himself as a motivational speaker based largely on lies. In a way, that’s almost as interesting of a story.
