Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (26 Viewers)

the plan to slowly watch My Brilliant Friend didn't work. Season 2 was as great as 1. it did take a few episodes into s2 but we finally figured out who everyone was without needing a pause to confer..

Got the Max deal so we can watch Penguin. Probably also watch Hacks and House of the Dragon. Maybe Mare of Eastown. Was hoping Dune: Prophecy would be good but the reviews are meh. Think that's it. Would be nice if The Last of Us season 2 would release before our 6 months ends but I doubt it.
If they're smart, BF deals will end after episode 2 of Last of Us season 2 airs.
I also just got Max deal this morning. Haven't had since House of Dragon season 1 ended. No better feeling then that first 10 minutes of a new streaming site adding to watch list. Here's what I found at first glance. Pretty happy

Winning Time. Loved season 1
Godzilla X Kong New Empire. Hmmm
Dune part 2. Omg, can't wait
Aquaman Lost Kingdom. Worth watch
Last of Us. Never seen.
Horizon American Saga. Costner.
Succession. Last season to watch!!
House of Dragon. Season 2!!!!
The Penguin. Seems popular.
Dune Prophecy. Onboard for sure
White Lotus. Season 2!!!!

Solid catalog for me to watch. Perfect time for winter!!!
Currently in the middle of Horizon: America Saga. Finding it a real slog to get through. We are debating about just giving up on it.

If you're looking for a sitcom, St. Denis Medical on NBC is pretty good, especially if you are a fan of The Office.
does it get better? Watched the first 2 episodes and didn't think it was that funny.
Not sure how anyone watches it after the horrific commercials "trying" to promote it.
David Alan Grier must be desperate for a pay check.
 He's good in it.

I know I’m late to the party, but I started Lost on Netflix and in four days have already made it to S2 E5. When I get done, maybe I will understand the memes and cultural references that went over my head before. I am really, really enjoying it so far, but I understand that the quality drops off in the later seasons.
As someone just starting it, Does it seem aged or does it hold up? I was thinking about giving it a re-watch (only watched it when it came out originally) but was wondering if it held up.
Some of the dialogue is a tad cheesy, but does it hold up?

Absolutely.

Well... I'm afraid Dune: Prophecy is another sci-fi miss.

It's slow and self important. Like Foundation was on Apple. It looks good but there's really no story here.

Yes I had to google a few times.

Thought the end of the second episode of Dune was fantastic. Love Travis Fimmel playing unhinged characters.
I'm loving the season so far

Huge Dune fan so really enjoying this season. Not sure what you were expecting from this but I'd just bail if feel like this after 3 episodes.

I love the moves. The stakes just don't seem very high in the TV show by comparison. It's the problem most prequels have.

Totally fair critique and I don't begrudge anyone their opinion on this stuff. But man that's a wild take from someone who loved the last couple Westworld seasons, IIRC. ;)

Setting the why behind the Harkonnen/Atriedes feud seems like a pretty high stakes game, especially given what occurs 10,000 years later

Watched the first episode of Landman. I hesitated to start it because it's the same guy that made Yellowstone and that always seemed like a soap opera to me (only going by commercials) Unfortunately, Landman does as well but I'll stick with it for a little longer.
And I don't have a problem with the daughter's lack of clothes.

@beer 30 - Yes, that part was interesting.

I am interested in how the Harkonnens became so Harkonnen-y but I'm guessing we won't get that.

It just feels like with only three episodes left that we're not going to get too far along in the story and will have to wait two years to continue. I'm kind of tired of that ploy.

Me and you both, hate that ****. I get your point, was kinda wondering that as well, I think they casually mentioned why they were in the pecking order they way they were but I've forgotten it. I don't think that was the point to all this anyhow but it would be cool to know.

So decided to find out because curiosity, here you go. Spoilers regarding how the Harkonnen's got to be so reviled in the current series if anyone is interested
The Battle of Corrin
A story line followed throughout the novel is the relationship between Vorian Atreides and Abulurd Butler. Abulurd is fiercely loyal to his mentor Vorian. Vorian tells Abulurd the truth behind Xavier Harkonnen's death, and how it was Iblis Ginjo who betrayed humanity and not Xavier. Abulurd changes his last name back to Harkonnen, which is reviled by most in the League. Though this bogs down Abulurd's military career, Vorian still manages to promote him to Segundo in the Army of the Jihad, and finally Bashar in the Army of Humanity. Together they vow to win the war against the thinking machines, and once this goal is met, to clear the name of Xavier Harkonnen.

Their relationship takes a bad turn during the Battle of Corrin when faced with the human-shield situation. Erasmus has placed two million captive humans in an array of cargo containers rigged to explode once the human fleet advances, called the Bridge of Hrethgir. Vorian believes that sacrificing the captive humans is a necessary loss, but Abulurd disagrees. The two argue until Vorian relieves Abulurd of his command and has him confined to quarters. In a final attempt to save the captives, Abulurd deactivates the weapons for the entire fleet, making the Corrin attack more difficult and dangerous and eventually causing much higher casualties. Unknown to either, the robot Erasmus disabled the human shield programming, saving the humans in orbit. Following the victory, Abulurd is discharged and branded a coward by Vorian, though not branded a traitor like his grandfather Xavier, and banished from the League. After Abulurd is sentenced to exile on Lankeveil, his children hear stories about how their nobility had been stolen from them. When Abulurd dies of a fever, his sons claim it was Vorian Atreides who had brought the fever to destroy the Harkonnens. When House Harkonnen returns to the empire, their wild accusations at House Atreides are accepted as truth. Thus begins the feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune:_The_Battle_of_Corrin

I was just reading through that article I linked in the spoiler tag above, interesting tidbit about the Bene Gesserit that helps put some of the current show in perspective.

The Traitors Canada finale:

No one reveals their status from this point forward. They took out the 2 men at the Round table. From 5 Faithfuls down to 3 vs 1 Traitor.
Fire pit banishment. Down goes Laurie... then Lauren. Tranna vs Neda remains. You know the rest. Worst - vocal - Faithful status confirmed.

Neda wins.

A few weeks ago, Neda revealed the page of her 'if this, then play this way' pre-game scenario playbook where 'if selected as Traitor on initial day, do this. Played it to a tee on how she wrote out her persona, appearance in both clothes and hairstyles, actions to take, and pitfalls previous player went wrong with this style of play. It referenced a page 15, so it had more then that. Crazy amount of scenario planning. Hope she reveals the entire playbook, but can understand why she wouldn't (for other gaming purposes).

Fun to watch her do her thing. She was so calculating in both Big Brother (twice) and Traitors. Every game she's in, they should take her out early.

wife and i both thought Cross might be worth a look. she has read several of the books and loves them.

the first episode was a ham-handed pile of crap. like it was written by a first time HS script writer. just cliche after cliche. no nuance. as subtle as Jon Runyan clearing the pile 6 seconds after the whistle.

pass on any more of that dreck

Just finished "Disclaimer" on Apple. A bit muddled as they got the story going but def worth watching. Kevin Kline really does a good job. Everyone was good in it really.

Oh and holy smokes the actress playing young Cate Blanchet. Good grief.

I also finished this today. It’s pretty good even though I hate voiceover and narration. I’ll watch anything Cuaron does. The cast is superb, the two you pointed out in particular. The last episode was a good payoff though it didn’t break the way I was hoping it might. 8/10

Neda was an extremely deserving winner. Everyone else played the finale horribly -- as most of them had for the entire season.

Kevin got caught promising final 2 to multiple people, USING THE SAME WORDS. And had no good defense for it. His whole endgame argument was "trust me, I'm a faithful and Lauren is the traitor" and it got blown up badly with his empty promises of final 2.

Cedric was confident that Lauren and TRANNA (????) were traitors. In what universe is Tranna possibly a traitor? And he completely discounted that what Neda did to Kyra was textbook traitor-on-traitor violence.

Laurie thought Neda was a traitor but at 6 and 5 voted out the only people who would have gone along with her on that. Then she voted to end the game despite still thinking Neda was a traitor. She failed to realize she was on the bottom of a 4-person alliance.

Lauren voted to end the game at 4 and 3 -- in what universe is it ever a good idea to end at 4, and why vote Tranna at 3? Her rolling over at the roundtables in this episode and some of the others in the second half of the season with "vote me out, I don't care" was also weird.

Tranna was her usual clueless self and this was exactly the ending I was expecting for her. Her speech at 3 was gold -- it sounded like she was talking about Neda but then we get blindsided with the Lauren vote.

The gameplay by most of the cast was utterly terrible but they were highly entertaining. I'll certainly take that.

Haven't watched any yet, but apparently the new Matlock series is really, really good.

Rotten Tomatoes seems to agree.
It’s not bad, but I think it’s geared more for my mom to enjoy it than for me. We’re used to story lines now that carry for a full season, and this is more like the original where each episode has its own case to solve, so resolutions seem a little rushed to me. It’s a show I don’t feel guilty multitasking through - my wife likes it though so we still have it in our rotation.

Caught up on Traitors Canada with a Thanksgiving weekend binge and through the finale.

Yep. It's all about keeping the clueless and bad playing Faithfuls around as long as possible. The more sure they are in their wrongheaded convictions, the deeper they go in the game. Tranna was convinced she knew everything every episode and yet, after being wrong every single time never once doubted at the end she was right. That kind of pig-headedness is exactly what the Traitors want. Same with Cedric, who never learned his lesson, never, ever, even once, allowed another person to finish a sentence, and always jumped in first with the wrong answer with absolute spiritual certainty. Kevin pretty much locked in on Lauren and never wavered, and he made it to the end. This whole season was a cakewalk for the Traitors, the faithfuls were terrible at the game.

Although I did miss out on commentary in this thread during the season, I have to say that I do like binge-watching this show. Some of the more annoying people and terrible play are less frustrating to watch knowing that I won't have to stew about their idiocy for a full week before getting resolution :lmao:

Also on Traitors Canada:

love how Cedric got picked for the 'Best Memory' part of the final challenge, his memory has been awful all season. He constantly mis-remembered what people said and used it as 'evidence' against them. He even, in his voiceover this episode, mis-remembered what the tombstone said in the challenge while it was on-screen, which the editors obviously left in to highlight how awful he is at remembering things.

And to that end, I do wish there was some kind of after-show with the contestants after the show has aired and they've seen all the stuff they missed or mistook, I'd love to know if he or some others learned any lessons about their own behavior and maybe will be better people in their day-to-day lives after seeing their portrayal.

Traitors Canada:
- Unsure if there's a betting site for it, but Cedric being the last male standing had to be a huge pot of coin. Cedric got the 2nd most $ winnings.
- Not a single recruitment / ultimatum needed.
- Had the final 6 instead of 5 because Gail was saved, adding 1 extra person for a few episodes.

I know the show’s Instagram account has posted videos of people learning who the Traitors were after being eliminated. But I don’t know if there are plans for any other retrospectives.

Rob Has a Podcast has done exit interviews with everyone.

I really liked how this was a rashoman style narration. The writing and even the visuals changed based on who was narrating.

I found it interesting enough, but was ultimately frustrated/disappointed that everything hinged on her Three's Company reaction to Kevin Klines imposition. Also found myself routing against all the main characters.

While each episode has it's own case to solve it also has a story line that carries on for the entire show thus far. The show is entertaining enough as mindless formulaic TV.

It's interesting that these TV re-boots aren't just updates of the old familiar shows because they tweak things slightly. In Matlock, the main character is an older woman instead of an older man.
In The Equalizer, the main character goes from a white, British man to a black, American female.

I won't spoil it but the new Matlock is more than just a gender reboot tweak.

Never compare to Spartacus. That show was magnificent from episode 1. Ha ha

I just finished season 3 last night and have yet to do season 4 but I've spoiled myself and I know how the actual history plays out which I assume is how s4 will end. I thought the first 2 seasons were great but I felt like season 3 wasn't as good. I felt like it was more melodramatic than the first 2 seasons or maybe it just seemed that way since I did not care one iota about Lucretia's storyline.

let her finally be dead

there were some minor nitpicky reasons as well.

The last 2-3 episodes were good, and I especially liked episode 9.

the wikipedia page says

On February 9, 2023, Starz announced that they were developing a revival and sequel series to Spartacus, with DeKnight returning to write for the series.[52] On November 9, 2023, Starz greenlit a 10-episode sequel series titled Spartacus: House of Ashur. DeKnight returning to serve as showrunner and executive producer and Nick E. Tarabay to reprise the role of the titular character.[53][54] In July 2024, Graham McTavish, Tenika Davis, Ivana Baquero, Jamaica Vaughan, Jordi Webber, Claudia Black, India Shaw-Smith and Leigh Gill added to the cast.[55]

Tracks: The release window for HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 has been confirmed, as JB Perrette, the CEO and president of global streaming at Warner Bros. Discovery, shared that the show is set to return in the second quarter of 2025.

2nd quarter=April-June
Promotional period end date: May 28, 2025

The Penguin was fantastic. Good to see a solid comic book related show/movie without the possibility that time travel or an alternative universe can just make everything I watched irrelevant, too.

You nailed it similar to me. First two seasons were great. First season was epic. Season 3? Meh. Season 4? Even more meh for me.
