Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (19 Viewers)

I think I already know the answer (not really) but is the SHO streaming app worth it? I already have Paramount+ at 9.99 a month and for a limited time can add SHO for $3 a month more. I already have pretty much all the other streaming services (below) so as is I am not really maximizing them.

Netflix, Hulu & ESPN+, Disney+, Prime, HBO Max, Paramount+, Peacock, and Apple TV+.

Not to mention DirecTV.

I also pay a little more for all the above because I go commercial free. Can't stand being forced to watch the same commercials over and over just to save a couple bucks.

Started the Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix. It has potential. Enjoying it, 2 episodes in.
Local radio has a TV and Movie critic on once a week and he said it was awful.  Said the lead actor had no personality.  He ripped the show pretty good and even said he rarely gives strong negative reviews.  He turned me off the show, but may give it a shot now.

Agree with your radio guy. I couldn’t stand the lead actor and the entire show was just meh. Made it through the first episode (barely) and will not go back.

We started it the other night.  We are two or three episodes in and are liking it.  The lead guy has a weird accent that seems strange at times but overall the story seems like it has potential.

Anybody watch this new  Bosch series on Freevee?

Just started the first episode. Not sure I buy the daughter as a rookie cop, but whatever, was entertained enough by the previous seasons.
We watched the four episodes that dropped.  Really liked Bosch and this version is similar.  Enjoyed it so far.  However, I do agree that the daughter as a cop just doesn't work.  She would be much better as a lawyer type.

Just finished Season 5 of this last night. They almost lost me in Season 4, but IMO they did a much better job managing the widening scope this last time around. Not a Wire-like masterpiece by any stretch (a comparison I've seen elsewhere), but just a solid, thoroughly enjoyable hour of TV.  Really looking forward to the next and last season.

Hard to believe I have a show on a major streaming service that hasn't been mentioned in this thread, but ... any fans of Joe Pera Talks With You out there? It's an Adult Swim show, so available on HBO Max.

It's a fictionalized version of the comedian living out an ordinary life in a smallish town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Not sure now else I can describe it, and I have no idea why I love it so much. This critic does a much better job than I could. It's one of my favorite shows of the last five or so years.

If you find yourself in need of some heartwarming but somehow also low-stakes TV, check it out. The link review characterizes parts of it as "borderline ASMR," and I wholeheartedly agree.

Yeah. 4.5 episodes in and the potential is lost. It's made for network tv and aging soccer moms. At least there's no commercials. Disappointed.

She's really cute, though.

I watched Firestarter on Peacock and it was awful. Watched it while eating lunch so as you can imagine I FF’d the crap out of it. The acting was awful and it looked like a film on a $2M budget. No wonder it bombed at the box office.
Yep, last night we shut'er down after 10 minutes and watched The Batman instead.

I didn’t have that kind of time and already watched The Batman. I think I watched maybe 20 minutes. 15 minutes content and 5 minutes FFing. Even that was a struggle.

I’d say as a streaming service, Peacock is the first to go. I canceled it again. My wife just starts things and I have to turn them off.

Ballpark, what you dropping per month on all that?

Oh plenty for sure but it's my entertainment and worth it to me.

Off the top of my head probably around $170-$180.

Let's see...

DirecTV with HBO Max $114.02

Netflix $16.70

Disney+/ESPN+/Hulu $6.43 with Verizon discount

Paramount+ $10.77

Peacock $10.77

Apple TV+ $5.38

Prime $139+ tax a year...so say about $150/12=$12.50 (I don't really count this because I use for shipping etc anyways)

So all in I'm at $176.57 / mo.

Yea I hear you man, rock on!

I don't watch much of anything other than an hour or so late night. It's also just me and the Mrs and she's not much of a TV person either. Just curious, thanks!

I added the detail and my guesstimating was pretty close.

We started watching Candy, with Jessica Biel in a late 70s perm, small community murder deal.

We're a couple in- decent start. Difficult to gauge tone from this one, especially with the cast (some comedic actors here). the murder happens ep 1 (and murderer identity pretty likely understood) and the rest of the season I'm guessing done in flashbacks to establish the relationships and possible motives.

Probably covered earlier but anyone watching/watched Outer Range?

Think I just started episode 6. Not feeling it but there is enough there to keep me coming back. Hoping for a payoff.

SPOILER Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Outer Range pissed me off in the same way Matrix 2&3 pissed me off. This is Lost+Twin Peaks level in the gobbledy#### HOF. Bunch of weird s!+t in every episode to keep you engaged mixed with unbelievable drama to keep the show moving then WHAM!!! The final episode has one reveal and a bunch of nuthin' other than a See You Next Season bomb drop. Eff the writers and their inability to answer the questions they presented over the course of 8 episodes. Bunch of stoopid. See Severance for how to land a payoff AND leave room for another season. It can be done but not by hacks. Strong Do Not Recommend!
Caveat emptor

This was fine, well-worn territory at this point, enjoyable but nothing earth shattering IMO.

What I loved was the format.  Five self-contained episodes, one released each day within a single week so it was kind of a hybrid of both formats, no thoughts of a second season or anything so they didn't have to leave anything open-ended.  Would love to see more of that pattern.

'bout to hop on a plane home and gonna watch the season 1 finale.  It's interesting enough to keep me watching and I'll probably catch S2 when it comes out.

i liked the format as well and liked the show enough to read up on the real candy and the true life events

Kinda knew what the "cliffhanger" would end up being and I was right.  Still, it's entertaining enough for me to see how S2 goes.

Savageland - Roku channel: I can’t remember where I heard about this movie, but it really captivated me. It’s done in the style of a real crime show talking about a mass murder in a border town, but the evidence doesn’t add up.  Really well done in my opinion.  It couldn’t have cost anything to make, but I thought the acting was very good for the budget.

I've been enjoying it.  I wasn't certain of Maddie being a cop but it works alright and the rest of the plots are pretty damn good.

Finished the Lincoln Lawyer yesterday and it was ok.  It was a decent story with poor acting except for Neve Campbell.  No rewatch-ability whatsoever.

I can't say I disliked it because I watched the entire thing and it was enjoyable, but yeah, the ending was strange for me.  None of the major plotlines were resolved but at the same time there weren't any cliffhangers or really anything of interest going on at the end.  I wonder how that fits in with the book.
wait is there not another season?

Been watching Mythic Quest - I guess it’s good? I like it but also feel like I’m just sort of looking to finish it now. I’m not sure why - just missing something. It’s funny but I only laugh out loud every now and then; the story itself is good enough but I’m not completely grabbed by it. Was expecting something more, I guess.
I think I like Season 2 better than the first one. Two of my favorite episodes so far have been the backstories - the one with the Dark Quiet Death and CW’s Isamov plagiarism. They were both just excellent. Only the letter was in season 2 but I just finished it.

I finished the second season of Russian Doll (Netflix), and I didn't like it as much as the first season.  There were some cool things in there, but Alan's story was really a bit part this time, and Natasha Lyonne's character (or perhaps the actress) grates on me - I find her funny, but can't watch two episodes in a row.  I guess this is kind of what you end up with if you try to break the show Dark (Amazon)... which was awesome.

I also finished the first season of Outer Range (Amazon).  I'll watch the next season... I like the setting, the slow pace, and some of the relationships, but it does have some flaws.  The twists at the end weren't very surprising to me, but I still haven't figured out how the hole works.

Now I just need to finish off The Boys (Amazon) season 2 to be ready for the explosion of new shows starting next week.  On my list:

  • Stranger Things season 4 (Friday dump)
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi (Friday, but weekly)
  • The Boys season 3 (13 days)
  • Ms. Marvel (18 days)
  • Umbrella Academy (32 days)
Then She-Hulk and LOTR and the Netflix 2nd half coming later in the year... nice.

yeah, I was intrigued by this one at first and slightly disappointed with the finale.  I'll watch season 2 but expectations are not as high as they otherwise may have been.

I'm not sure how the hole works either. There is a time traveler thing involved, but it seems unclear on how it all ties in with things that have happened. I'll see if next season explains it.

So uh the new stranger things season drops Friday

supposedly it has more gore than the last season and has an omage to a nightmare mare on elm street
