How is Station Eleven any different than The Stand or fill in the blank post pandemic survivalist concept? Willing to give it a go but, how many times can a wheel get reinvented?
I really can’t say because I generally don’t watch most of these post-apocalyptic shows. In fact if I knew that’s what Station Eleven was I may have passed. But trust me it’s good. You’ll cry.

One of the main differences is that most post-apocalypse shows either have zombies or monsters/aliens; or the more "realistic" type shows usually have roving gangs of violent cannibals and everyone is fighting for food and shelter and trying to find a safe place. And that can be pretty awesome but this show doesn't have any of that. The '10 years later' parts are focused around a few communities pretty much living in peace, one of which is a traveling Shakespeare troupe. This isn't really the selling point of the show, but it sets it apart. I think we discussed this last year in this thread or elsewhere. The 'rebuilding society' theme rarely involves the arts - its usually just how do we grow food and build shelters and get clean water, etc. This show asks the question - if people were raising families and surviving in a world like this, what would the value of artists and theater be?

This is one of those shows I don't recommend to anyone because I think many/most won't enjoy it as I did. Many say it starts slow, but for me the first three episodes are the best. The third episode is the best of the series - it is entirely devoted to the backstory of a character we hardly ever see again, which seems really strange but is fantastic writing.

I must be the only one who finds some of the characters on Succession annoying. And, by some of the characters, I mean all the kids. Watched first season and never looked back.

I think that's the point. I'm 4 episodes in and can't stand them, but they are horrible human beings I'm rooting against. I'm rooting for both the dad to wake up and bring down the hammer or for the guy whose company they bought to carry through his promise to tear them all apart.

Man, you should go into sales. That's the best pitch I've read for this show yet. I'll start it tonight. Thanks.

I tried the first two episodes last night. Painful. One star. Do not recommend.
Agreed

The whole Shakespeare troop bored me to tears. This show is just not for me.

I would watch if they were ravaged by a pack of mad dogs.

I still need to pick up Season 3. First season was awesome, 2nd season, the storylines got a little old, but still good. Not sure where we sit on 3 in here.

But yes, the characters are loathsome. I have a feeling super rich spoiled lucky sperm club kids are like that in real life too.....I mean, we had 4 years of observing it on a daily basis, no?

Passengers (Prime): Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence spaceship romcom/suspense. I somehow wasn't aware of this movie, can't remember how I heard about it recently and added it to my list. You know how every romcom has the guy misrepresenting himself early, couple falling in love, then the lie hangs over his head, he finally tells her, she gets mad but comes back to him? That again, except that the action/lie from Pratt was so evil that nobody ever should have been able to forgive him for it. I thought the movie was well made (great effects), well acted, looked good all around, and even the suspense part was done well. It's just the magnitude of his lie that overwhelms the movie... they did a good job of showing how furious she was, including an assault that seemed justified, but I just think it's irredeemable. I think that's all I'll be able to remember from the movie if I think about it in the future, so even though everything else was good, that might have ruined it for me.
I like that movie. To me it’s an interesting moral dilemma.
Same, think it gets too much hate. It’s almost a meme level of constant hate on that specific plot point whenever this movie gets brought up anywhere (even though they wrote in a cheap “out” at the end of the movie.) Tick basically brings up the one thing that everyone always mentions, it’s almost to “How can Monica and Rachel afford that apartment?” level of broken record by this point.
Monica and Rachel had rich parents. Mystery solved.

You’re gonna miss the mutated zombie turtles in episode 4 iirc

This will be an odd one to post with this group of deviants (myself included), but we have enjoyed 'The Chosen' so far. It's on Amazon. Not sure where else. Christian programming, but interesting as far as the Holy Land in 30 AD It sits at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I don't know... I'm still finding new stuff in zombie shows/movies.

I hate every character. That’s why I stopped. It is great writing and good acting, but I need a protagonist
Cousin Greg is your guy!

Greg: Is he nice?

Tom: Is he nice? You’re asking about the moral character of a man named Rat-****er Sam?

One of the best lines in the history of TV

Yeah we tapped out after like 2 episodes

Let @BeTheMatch , the guy who thinks "The Sopranos" is ridiculously bad TV, tell you all about how great it is.

He says trust him, you just gotta hang in there.

Rachel was basically disowned and not supported by her parents after dumping her fiance prior to the series start, Monica's parents favored Ross and did not support Monica. Rachel was a waitress and Monica was a chef but also got fired early on in the series.

Official explanation was Rent Control and illegal subletting from Monica's grandmother who originally had the apartment. And I hate that I know all this thanks to my wife constantly watching reruns... :bag: :banned:

Tom, while a cuck, kinda rules too.

(Also blew my mind he played Prior Philip - a SLIGHTLY different character - in Pillars of the Earth).

It’s was Monica’ grandmother’s apartment (that she subletted, somewhat illegally) and is heavily rent controlled from way back.

How does Station Eleven compare to The Leftovers?
In the Leftovers a small percentage of the population just disappears. There's never an explanation of why. The survivors slowly go to hell without the missing ones.

In Station Eleven a huge percentage of the population that dies, victims of a plague that kills everyone who gets it. The survivors have to first avoid the plague, then find out how to live again which ends up being small groups of people in various places, which are tenuously connected. Things do not go to hell.

The Leftovers is the best show I've ever seen. Station Eleven is very good, maybe in the top 10 or 15 shows I've seen.

Finished season 2 of Alice in Wonderland. Not sure if this is the end or not. The season was a little ham fixed, but I liked the ending.

They are all annoying but still good characters. Shiv is the only one that I find annoying enough, that if they were all like her, I probably couldn't watch.

Tom is hilarious (and annoying)

Cousin Greg is hard to like in his own way but the Tom-Greg dynamic is great TV

I love the show and would say there's not a single likeable main character. You have to go deep down the cast list into the side characters to find anyone not completely despicable. But nothing wrong with that - its not like I have to "root" for someone to win the show like its a football game.

Hunters Season 2 was absolute trash compared to season 1. Felt completely rushed and half the season was wasted on worthless AL Pacino flashbacks.

What Doesn't Kill Us (Tubi): A post-zombie mockumentary! Background: Some Texas restaurant chain owner uses a blowfish hybrid as a new dish, ~20k people turn into zombies. It's cured, and these people are back in society working normal jobs. We pretty much follow 3 people: a baseball player trying to be the first necrosapien drafted in a major sport, an office zombie trying to conceive and get a promotion, and a non-zombie woman running a campaign for a zombie Democrat running for Texas governor.

The first two stories are good, with a fair amount of echoes of race and sexuality tropes we've all watched before. The third is a bit of a dud, partly because the actress has a really weird cadence and annoyed me. There was some good understated humor, no real violence or zombie action... this was pretty interesting.

Watched season 1 of Exit, which is "A dark drama series based on true stories from Norway's financial scene", and had to take a break. There's too much control, degradation, brutalization of anyone lesser than this group of 4 friends who've had fantastic business success to the point they don't really have to work and just spend most of their time indulging themselves. "Anyone lesser than this group" includes spouses, and there are some real evil maneuvers going on in that regard.

I'll wait awhile before watching season 2. Right now it's like 2 of the main characters are in between Mr. Potter from It's a Wonderful Life and Frank Booth from Blue Velvet.
Finished Season 2 of this which was much better than season 1. Consequences of actions meted out better and the 4 main abusive characters all finally began to pay in different ways. Really solid acting, esoecially by Tobias Santelmann who is in a lot of Scandinavian shows and always does a good job in a wide range of roles-- I've seen him in at least 7 shows.
